The book, brown girl dreaming is a amzingly written book. This book is based on the theme being confident in yourself. This theme is shown in the book when a woman of color describes how discrimination didn’t let her dought herself. This oustanding story takes place in Columbus, Ohio were the lead character Jaquline Woodson is born. The author gives a perspective of a girl facing pain and disrespect at a young age and how she learns to be strong and courages from her family and friends. I thuroughly enjoyed this heart warming novel that will open readers eyes to the harships of life for each and every human being.
Throughout the story Jaquline is consistently being treated terribly by white race and disrespected due to the color of her skin.

The award-winning book of poems, Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson, is an eye-opening story. Told in first person with memories from the author’s own life, it depicts the differences between South Carolina and New York City in the 1960s as understood by a child. The book begins in Ohio, but soon progresses to South Carolina where the author spends a considerable amount of her childhood. She and her older siblings, Hope and Odella (Dell), spend much of their pupilage with their grandparents and absorb the southern way of life before their mother (and new baby brother) whisk them away to New York, where there were more opportunities for people of color in the ‘60s. The conflict here is really more of an internal one, where Jacqueline struggles with the fact that it’s dangerous to be a part of the change, but she can’t subdue the fact that she wants to. She also wrestles with the issue of where she belongs, “The city is settling around me….(but) my eyes fill up with the missing of everything and everyone I’ve ever known” (Woodson 184). The conflict is never explicitly resolved, but the author makes it clear towards the end
Brownies is a story by Z. Z. Packer, a young African American writer. This story appears in Packer’s short stories collection, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere. The story is about a Brownie troop of fourth-grade African American girls from suburban Atlanta, Georgia, who go to summer camp. At camp, they encounter a troop of white girls and believe that one of the white girls addressed them with a derogatory racial slur. The African American girls resolve to beat up the white girls. This story is about racism and racial segregation as it is experienced by young black girls. Ironically, the story has a twist. Packer shows the reader about racial segregation and prejudice in the world through this short story. Prejudice among groups as well as within
Anne Moody's story is one of success filled with setbacks and depression. Her life had a great importance because without her, and many others, involvement in the civil rights movement it would have not occurred with such power and force. An issue that is suppressing so many people needs to be addressed with strength, dedication, and determination, all qualities that Anne Moody strived in. With her exhaustion illustrated at the end of her book, the reader understands her doubt of all of her hard work. Yet the reader has an outside perspective and knows that Anne tells a story of success. It is all her struggles and depression that makes her story that much more powerful and ending with the greatest results of Civil Rights and Voting Rights for her and all African Americans.
This is because the girl dreams of being a beautiful superhero. She dreams of flying and the mother even says “Oh, if only I could fly”, these both indicate very powerful situations. Also, I feel that as a little girl the character is left out a lot, like when her parents are talking in the mornings and she cannot get up until her mother comes to wake her. But, the girl mentions in her dreams that she can see everything that happens, maybe because she is now a woman and is not left out like she is in her real life. Lastly, she dreams of being a superhero with super powers, this shows she wants to be powerful, but cannot be in her waking life. I believe the vision the writer, Judith Ortiz Cofer, is trying to portray is women do want to be powerful. Both the daughter and the mother want to fly and do something more with their lives, but they cannot. I believe many women could relate to the story when it was written in the mid-twentieth century. This is because at the time women were expected to be housewives and not do many extraordinary things. Also, I believe many women wanted to do powerful things, like vote and get a job, and this was a time period when the view of women’s roles was

Toni Morrison's novel "The Bluest Eye", is a very important novel in literature, because of the many boundaries that were crosses and the painful, serious topics that were brought into light, including racism, gender issues, Black female Subjectivity, and child abuse of many forms. This set of annotated bibliographies are scholarly works of literature that centre around the hot topic of racism in the novel, "The Bluest Eye", and the low self-esteem faced by young African American women, due to white culture. My research was guided by these ideas of racism and loss of self, suffered in the novel, by the main character Pecola Breedlove. This text generates many racial and social-cultural problems, dealing with the lost identity of a young African American women, due to her obsession with the white way of life, and her wish to have blue eyes, leading to her complete transgression into insanity.
Black Girl Lost (Goines 1973) and Makes Me Wanna Holler (McCall 1994), both give a voice to the African American minority. The African American and minority themes: "The Dream" and "Choice / Self Determination" are very significant in the two texts. The right choices have to be made and one must continue to have self- determination in order to reach "The Dream". In the two texts, both characters make plenty of good and bad choices and continuously try to have self- determination in order to achieve "The Dream", but their choices and determination led the characters to very different places. There are three variables that may not cause, but can contribute to the African American not being able to achieve "The Dream" by causing conflict in their choices and self- determination. The three variables are: family and friend environments, individual needs and anxieties, and low motivation among minority members. Some of the variables are causes and consequences of prejudice & discrimination (Marger 1997).
In Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, published in 1970, the struggle begins in childhood. Two young black girls -- Claudia and Pecola -- illuminate the combined power of externally imposed gender and racial definitions where the black female must not only deal with the black male's female but must contend with the white male's and the white female's black female, a double gender and racial bind. All the male definitions that applied to the white male's female apply, in intensified form, to the black male's, white male's and white female's black female. In addition, where the white male and female are represented as beautiful, the black female is the inverse -- ugly.
“The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison, is a story about the life of a young black girl, Pecola Breedlove, who is growing up during post World War I. She prays for the bluest eyes, which will “make her beautiful” and in turn make her accepted by her family and peers. The major issue in the book, the idea of ugliness, was the belief that “blackness” was not valuable or beautiful. This view, handed down to them at birth, was a cultural hindrance to the black race.
She encounters and faces racism in many cases even though the time in the novel was after Civil Right Act in 1964. Rosaleen was a strong and courageous black woman who even stands up against the racist men who once try to stop her and bully her in the way to register for vote. Rosaleen who is tired of racism and assaulting, spit on them and after refusing to clean her spit from them, the three men beat her so hard and one of the men says, “call to police” to send Rosaleen to jail (32). Finally police comes and says, “You are under arrest… Assault, theft, and disturbing the peace” to Rosaleen (33). So, as a black woman, Rosaleen experiences racism against her throughout the novel even though they she should be treated equally according to the new law of that

In the novel The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, she exposes the suffering produced by the problems caused by gender and race oppression through the experiences of African-American children. During the 1940’s, the United States had composed an identity through mass media with books such as “Dick and Jane”, and movies like “Sherley Temple.” These media sources provided a society based on national innocence. In the novel, Morrison relates to and exposes the very real issues that were hidden by the idea of the stereotypical white middle-class family.
Dreams are apart of human nature. They drive humanity, lead it on, and give the world hope, but the concept of dreams have often become a dream itself to many of African descent. The struggles of African Americans through the years have made goals something of a fantasy and put the focus on human necessities. But what happens when those dream are put away? Many texts throughout the ages such as, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes, and the song Village Ghetto Land by Stevie Wonder show through family relationships, racism, and sacrifice that when people 's dreams are cut off it can cause them to suffer and sometimes become bitter.
