When breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of Brown-Forman, it can get very complex, but they obviously learn from the weaknesses. Although it does not matter what company, every large business will have a weakness. In this case, a couple weaknesses that Brown-Forman has are competition, and a Chinese scandal that could rapidly question their ethical behavior. Looking closer at its competition with others, it shows that it is comparable; each business has its own brands it owns, and each one is almost neck and neck when fighting for its loyal consumers. Usually one slip and one will start to fall, thus perfection is almost needed just to survive in this type of industry. Diageo and Suntory as well as others, keep the bar high.

A very large success was in 1920, when Owsley Brown applied for a medicinal whiskey license and receives it. 1920 was the first year of prohibition, which made the manufacturing and selling of all alcohol illegal in the United States, unless a whiskey is for medicinal purposes, it was illegal. Brown-Forman has the medicinal whiskey license and continued its business in the alcoholic industry, with very few competitors, five others to be exact. Brown-Forman then acquires a brand by the name of “Early Times”, they buy the entire stock of this bourbon and move it to Louisville. In 1956, Brown-Forman acquired the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, which is most likely one of their best moves because Jack Daniels became a very successful whiskey. 1971 came along and Canadian mist is purchased, then after 8 years, Southern Comfort is also purchased by Brown-Forman. They also acquired the trademark and U.S distribution rights for Fontana Candida Italian Wines, which is the world’s leading supplier of Frascati Wines.
