Barrick Gold is the world’s largest mining company with a vision of being the” worlds largest
Company by operating in a safe, profitable, and responsible manner.”
This case analysis will evaluate mainly the communication problem that Barrick Gold, the world’s largest mining company in Canada faced. The cause of such problem surfaced from the Pascua Lama project. These causes and symptoms of such a project will be discussed in this analysis.
The main communication problem Barrick Gold is facing is the fact that the company didn’t go according to plan, and didn’t stick to the promises they made. When a company like Barrick is faced with such accusations, the companies name becomes distorted as for its reputation. This caused legal disputes against the company.
The factors that caused Barrick Gold’s communication problem is For instance, when the company did not follow up with what they promised to move the

glaciers that would be affected by its mining activities. The company did not implement this proposition and that led to trust issues and frustration from several parties that were involved. There main symptoms of Barrick Gold’s communication problem, is the fact that the Argentina passed laws protecting the glaciers and the outcome of these laws were a sign that the country disapprove ,of Barrick’s actions.
These actions created a problem. Another symptom to consider is the farmers from Huasco Valley and critics that were complaining about the waste in the river that was caused by the company. All these are proof that Barrick Gold has a communication problem.
The main stakeholders involved in the problem include the local farmers, residents, the shareholders of the company and governments of both Chile and Argentina. The farmers and residents, as mentioned previously, are affected by the pollution (which includes chemicals and wastes) being dumped into the river from the glaciers. The Chile government was also concerned with the wastes that were dumped so as a result has taken action with legal complaints in 2010. Argentina was very concerned with the glaciers and permafrost; the government eventually passed down a law to protect the
glaciers. Using the communication model, Barrick Gold would be able to correct its issues with its stakeholders. If the company were to communicate with Chile, the sender, Barrick Gold, would need to come up with an idea. All they have to do is send a clear message to the parties that are affected. The company should come up with filters for areas around the glacier to stop all the harsh chemicals from being dumped into the river. One of the ways to present this idea is for the Barrick Gold executives to contact the government officials of Chile. After that they must make sure that Chile got the message and try to get feedback to guarantee that communication was successful. In order to communicate with the stakeholder, Argentina, Barrick Gold would need to first come up with a reasonable solution. Barrick Gold could decide to transport the glaciers away from mining area which was the original idea from Argentina. The message could be sent through a letter to government officials. After the recipient has received the letter, the problem should be solved. To sum this up, Barrick Gold created a communication problem due to lack of planning and involvement with the company’s plans. Barrick Gold promised to move the glaciers away from the mining area, many problems occurred as a result of not following up to what they promised to do. Using the right communication tools and working on fixing the issues they have with Chile and Argentina, as listed above Barrick Gold will gain back it’s image and reputation in the eyes of stakehold
- Marketing is one of the main issues in the company because its not being used properly to take full advantage to help increase sales.
- The government heavily depended on appropriations from national budget and loans. Because of the existence of insufficient tariffs to cover operating costs, government had to bring changes in management and the structure of regulation separating the quality and tariff regulatory functions from those of service provision. Sewerage treatment needed significant investments in water treatment especially in metropolitan area Santiago. Although three new water treatment plants were planned to be constructed under BOT with EMOS, targets of treating 100 percent of all wastewater by 2005 set by the Chilean administration did not seem realistic given an increase (up to 80 percent) in the amount of funding now needed for annual investment.
For decades, the steel industry has been one of the toughest markets on a global scale with most steel corporations ending up in bankruptcy. Foreign and domestic competitors, management issues, environmental issues, political agenda’s and technology have had much to do with the demise and more so of the success of the steel industry. The issues that this case focus on Nucor Corporation was of:
Acknowledging that conflicts is a prerequisite for sustainable management that is participatory and equitable. Solving conflicts requires the cooperation of all groups involved. Through the cooperation of all parties, mountaintop coal mining may be modified so that better social, environmental and economic goals can be achieved and the interests of all affected parties can be adequately considered.
The user requirements were not taken into consideration thus affecting the purchasing orders, poor management of inventory, the manufacturing and finance department were not integrated. This also required a lot of recoding thus costing AMP Canada further investment
In contrast, the whistleblowers will be saving the company both from the private and public sector. Also, the company may have been blacklisted into other contracts because of the corruption (Nicol, 2015,
The Mexican government has been ineffective in addressing the ecological issues associated with the water shortages in Mexico City because of its institutional fragmentation. Currently, forty-five percent of the water used in the greater Mexico City is supplied by over-exploiting the aquifer because the current water extraction rate from the aquifer is one hundred and eighty-four percent greater than the sustainable level. (Pina, 2011 ) Since Mexico City receives seventy percent of its water from the aquifer, its depletion poses a significant problem to the government of Mexico and its people. (Pina, 2011 ) In Mexico City, the federal, regional and local government levels all play a part in determining water management policies. While the local government of Mexico City sh...
Within the Gilbane Gold case, the major problem is the contribution of water pollution by dumping chemicals to speed production for Z CORP. However, there is doubt as to what extent the company violated city regulations. Tom Richards believes that Z-CORP broke regulations repeatedly but Professor Massin believes that it is not solid evidence. Part of the problem is that two different tests are involved: an older and a less sensitive test which does not break regulations but there is also the newer and more sensitive one which does. The newer test was said that the company just broke city regulations, but not by a large amount.

It is very clear that the problems experienced in the companies are not lone standing but in most of the cases they are dependent on each other and there are strong bonds or relationships with regards to the cause and effects between them. It is therefore important to form or establish a strong cause and affect between them.
The main problems that are affecting the company were the high level of labour turnover, below target production rates, high levels of scrap, the employees had little input in the decision making, therefore resulting in low motivation and job satisfaction, and didn't have enough feedback on there performance. Added to this was the conflict between the supervisors and employees in the production and packing areas, and the grading and payment levels wasn't satisfactory to the employees.
Happy Chips, Inc. is faced with a serious problem, with only one mass merchandise customer called “Buy 4 Less” being unhappy with the company’s operating performance. Buy 4 Less had several problems cited, including frequent stock outs, poor customer service responsiveness, and high prices for the products being supplied. Buy 4 Less came up with solutions they think seem fit to fix the problems they found with Happy Chips, Inc. and if Happy Chips, Inc. wishes to remain a supplier to their company, they will have to incorporate these changes. The problem, however, with this scenario, is that employees of Happy Chip, Inc. are not happy with the demands Buy 4 Less has bestowed upon them, which include providing direct store delivery four times a week instead of three, installing an automated order inquiry system to increase customer service responsiveness, and decreasing product prices by 5%. Even though the easiest thing for Happy Chips, Inc. to do is to agree to the changes Buy 4 Less wants them to do, Wendell Worthmann, the manager of logistics cost analysis, doesn’t agree to the changes right away.

Many scientific studies also show increases in the intensity, duration, and extent of droughts, higher atmospheric temperatures, warmer sea surface temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, and diminishing glaciers and snowpack. The bottom line is that causes of climate change, such as greenhouse gas emissions, will have to be minimized if people want to do as much as possible to solve the water crisis. 70% of this demand derives from agriculture which shows the influence of water on food supply globally as well as not just drinking water (Sawin “Water Scarcity could overwhelm the Next Generation”). But increasing water use is not just a matter of the greater number of people needing it to drink and eat; it also comes from pollution and misuse of water supplies, by either dumping or runoff of bacteria or chemicals into water. This also “causes other pollutions as well such as soil and air pollution, accelerating wetland damage and human-caused global warming” (Smith and Thomassey 25). According to a UN report, recent estimates suggest that climate change will account for about 20 percent of the increase in global water scarcity in coming decades. One of the main causes of water scarcity is water mismanagement worldwide.
