The themes in Romeo and Juliet reflect, the author, William Shakespeare's life in the 1590’s. The influence from Italian poet Francesco Petrarch, known as the father of love poetry, is also felt throughout the play. One of the biggest themes in the play is love. The love between Romeo and Juliet makes them defy many boundaries. Love is shown to be a powerful and destructive force by broken relationships, reconciliation, and the statement love leads to death. One way that love is shown to be a powerful and destructive force is through broken relationships like the nurses and Juliets. The misadventure of Romeo and Juliet “buries their parents strife” (Stauffer 2). By the deaths of Romeo and Juliet both families can finally reconcile. When the Capulets and Montagues come together at the funeral of Romeo and Juliet Mr.Montague says “But I can give thee more, For I will raise her statue in pure gold, That whiles Verona by that name is known, There shall no figure at such rate be set, As that of true and faithful Juliet”(V.3. 314-318). Even though Mr.Montague, Romeo’s father, hated the Capulets, he’s now saying he will raise Juliet’s statue in pure gold, and their won't be a statue more praised than Juliets. Mr.Capulet says “As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie, Poor sacrifices of our enmity”(V.3.319-320).This quote is very important because it's where Mr.capulet acknowledges that their enmity caused all the deaths. At first the love between Romeo and Juliet is shown to be an “artificial construction and then they move beyond that construction”(Perrello 962). The relationship between Romeo and Juliet changes from lust to love. Unfortunately it's Romeos and Juliets “naivete that causes their tragic death”(Bond 1). As Ronald Bond explains in this quote, it's Romeos and Juliet lack of experience that causes their deaths. When Mrs.Capulet decides to plan Juliet’s and Paris wedding Juliet becomes very angered because she is already married to Romeo. Juliet yells at her mom and tells her to “delay this marriage for a month, a week. Or, if you do not, make the bridal bed In that dim monument where Tybalt lies”(iii, 5, 200-202).
