In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are two lovers: Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who both come from feuding families. The lovers ultimately decided to take their own lives so that they could be together. Many people say that this tragedy is caused by the parents and the two lovers themselves. However, contrary to that belief, Friar Lawrence is guilty of the death of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence, although not being related to the feuding families, is very crucial to the play. There are many reasons why Friar Lawrence is guilty of the death of Romeo and Juliet on numerous occasions. One is the parents of Romeo and Juliet. The family feud caused Romeo and Juliet to go to Friar Lawrence to secretly marry them. Although Friar should have told the families what was going on between their children, the families could have chosen a better solution rather than their two children dying to be with each other. The families did end the feud after both children died, however, if Friar told the parents they could have done this before both children died. After both families have found out that Romeo and Juliet have died, the two families discuss how they are going to end the feud and pay tribute. Capulet: O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughter’s jointure, for no more can I demand. Montague: But I can give thee more, For I will ray her statue in pure gold, That while Verona by that name is known, There shall no figure at such rate be set As that of true and faithful Juliet. Capulet: As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie, poor sacrifices of our enmity. This quote shows the families admit what they did was wrong and decide that they are going to pay tribute to the couple, unlike Friar Lawrence who chose not to be involved.
