Is it really possible to die of a broken heart? When people hear about broken heart, they typically think that you have broken up with a boyfriend/girlfriend, and believe that the phrase “broken heart” is just that, a phrase. Those thoughts are incorrect because a broken heart is a real thing. Many people haven’t heard of “Broken Heart Syndrome” or “Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.” What is broken heart syndrome? It is a syndrome that occurs when there is a sudden heart failure that occurs about an emotional trauma. This syndrome was first recognized by Japanese doctors in the 1990’s. When a heart attack occurs, the heart muscle is being deprived from oxygen due to a blocked blood vessel, which causes the heart muscle to stop moving entirely. When broken heart syndrome occurs, there is a surge of hormones that impairs the heart muscle to be able to pump correctly. Due to the heart muscle not being able to pump correctly, the blood flow is blocked by a long-lasting spasm of the artery, causing the heart muscle to balloon out. This can be life threating (Can You Die 6). Although this condition is pretty rare, it mostly effects post- menopausal and middle aged women. It is not known as to why it mostly affects women, but it is believed to be because of the changes in a women’s hormone levels (Besser). Although they are uncertain of how it occurs, they think that the surge of adrenaline of grief disrupts the heart muscle cells. Not only is this syndrome often mistaken for a heart attack, it can kill a person if not treated correctly. Dealing with extreme emotional distress can physically change the way that the heart can pump, causing it to no longer be able to pump normally …show more content…
Without knowing the difference, there could be a higher risk to the patients’ health and recovery. The film “Smoke Signals” tells the tale of how two boys travels to Arizona in order to retrieve one of their father’s ashes. During this journey there are several flashbacks to the boy’s, and father’s, lives. During one of the father’s, Arnold, flashbacks he asks his neighbor what was the worst thing that they had ever done, after their reply he vaguely states that he “broke three hearts, too” (Eyre 1998). At first I saw this to be a plain and simple explanation, breaking somebody’s heart is an awful thing to do to a person. As I looked into who’s hearts he broke, I noticed that Arnold broke four hearts not three. The first three people that I instantly thought of when Arnold stated this quote was: Thomas, Victor, and Arnold’s wife. But, I also think that Arnold broke his own heart along with the other three. Overall, I believe that Arnold acknowledged that he broke Thomas, Victor, and his wife’s heart, but he didn’t realize that in the process he also broke his own heart.
Cardiomyopathy, by definition, means the weakening of the heart muscle. The heart is operated by a striated muscle that relies on the autonomic nervous system to function. Cardiomyopathy is diagnosed in four different ways based on what caused the illness and exactly what part of the heart is weakened. The four main types of cardiomyopathy are dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. One other category of cardiomyopathy that is diagnosed is “unclassified cardiomyopathy.” Unclassified cardiomyopathy is the weakening of the heart that does not fit into the main four categories.
After the old man is dead and under the floorboards the police arrive, and the narrator remains calm and his "manor had convinced them.?Villains!" "Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! -- tear up the planks! -- Here, here! -- it is the beating of his hideous heart!" The narrator of "The Tell Tale Heart" shows that he is unreliable. Concluding the questioning by the police, the narrator had a sudden fear and assumed that the policemen have heard the old man?s heart beat. Not only the narrator could hear the old man?s heart beating, but it is assumed (from the audience perspective) that the police could hear the narrator?s heart beating. The narrator listening to the old man?s heart beat is a replacement of his own consciousness that brought out the guiltiness for murdering the old man.

The blood that is pumped is filled with nutrition and oxygen (Colombo 7). It travels through out your body in less than sixty seconds. So it needs to be taken extra good care of. When abuse is put on the body, the heart’s performance is not at its best. The Heart is a major organ that needs loving and care. Everyone has only one and by abusing it, they are cutting their live span little by little. People can live their lives freely but how they choose to live them could be the difference between life and death.
