Britney Spears versus the Music Industry Britney Jean Spears was born in Mccomb Mississippi on December 2, 1981. She was raised in rural Kentwood Louisiana. Brit as she is lovingly referred to by her close family and friends, dreamt of a life outside of the deep south. (“I want to be more than swamp trash!”) she was quoted saying in a Rolling Stone article. Britney’s parents Jamie and Lynne Spears desperately wanted and needed their daughter to succeed, in order for their own life to improve. A multitude of financial mistakes surrounding the Spears family would greatly shape the drive and urgency behind making Britney a star. After 2 seasons and full year run on Disney, Britney returned to Kentwood and realized, she could have more. Her parents, especially Lynne Spears worked tirelessly to get her young daughter to the right people, who could make her a star. Completely broke and unsure of where the funds would come from Britney and her mother, headed off to New York, where for the next 3 years, Britney would do bit pieces, casting calls, and off-off Broadway productions. In 1997 with a second bankruptcy looming over the Spears family, Lynne and Britney knew this was her last chance to make it. Britney began in early 1997 auditioning for record labels, but to no avail, until Jive records, a new subsidiary of Sony Music, was in desperate need of a star. In comes Britney, sweet, kind, somewhat talented, and in desperate need of money to save her failing family. According to People magazine Britney was signed the same day, and other reports state that her appeal was that she was just poor swamp trash that could be manipulated. Lynne Spears signed for her daughter’s new record deal without any hesitation, or legal representation present. Britney and her mother were now locked into a 10-year contract equipped with what the industry refers to as control clauses.
