Britain And Being British
There are many reasons why being British and living in Britain is such
a privilege. It’s not just because that Britain is the only country
that a pizza can get to your house faster than an ambulance or that
banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters or even
that three Brits die each year from testing if a 9v battery works on
their tongue. But there are many more reasons why you should be proud
to be British. Being British is not just having been born in Britain
but it is the culture and British way of living which you are born
into. I am proud to be British because Britain is such a small and
independent country but has gained power to be as big as other
economically developed countries such as America, Japan and Germany. I
also enjoy the British way of life and love the idea of people sitting
in a field in Shropshire wearing floral outfits and drinking English
tea and eating scones. I love the English language and the different
accents that British people are able to communicate with.
The most important factor that distinguishes Britain from any other
country is that we are an independent island far away from any other
country or colony and are one of the few countries that has its own
separate island away from the rest of the continent. Other features
distinguishing Britain from other countries is its history. Britain
has history dating back to over a thousand years ago, whereas new land
countries such as America only have a couple of hundred years dating
back. Therefore we are distinguished as an old or ancient country and
are usually seen as old by most modern countries. The National Health
Service of Britain is one of the best in the world and people from all
over Europe and the World flock here to undertake surgery and consult
doctors about problems. This is the same for the British Army who
although is smaller than most countries armies is extremely strong and
In the years following World War II, many scholars argue the United States and Britain have been bonded by a ‘special relationship.’ Since 1945, this relationship has resulted in several policies, both domestic and foreign. The ‘special relationship’ includes aspects in finances, allied forces during the Cold War, similar cultures and even personal relationships between leaders.
To be an American means more than just living in the country for a set amount of years. It means more than being granted citizenship, and more than just waving a Boy Scout American flag in your yard on Memorial Day. To be an American is to be free, and that is what we as Americans sometimes take for granted and forget. Being an American isn 't just living in the "greatest country in the world", there are plenty of other countries that say the same exact things. There are far less countries in this world, though, that are free, and have the American mindset. Not many countries employ so many freedoms and have the 'American dream '. The American mindset is not just something that
World War I, also known as “The Great War”, was a global war that revolved mainly around Europe. It took place from 1914 to 1918. This was a very brutal war that caused many casualties. The soldiers who survived experienced severe trauma and mental discomfort. This trauma was a direct result of the violence and agony they experienced during the war. Motivation for this war was the idea of nationalism and the pride in one’s country. This war was the cause of disillusionment among many of the soldiers that were involved in it.
The British Empire at its height, encompassed vast amounts of territories; consequently, within the scope of land under British rule there was also a large range of races and nationalities. Attitudes towards these races and nationalities were as varied as the territories themselves. The expansion of this empire can be viewed as the prominent base factor that allowed the study of these new dominions, this catalysed and formed ideas on race and nationality during this period; other influencing factors such as; scientific research of the time and media representation of other cultures; through the medium of travel writing and journals . However, before Analysing British attitudes on this subject in this period, it is important to define both race and nationality and the difference between them. Firstly race, The Oxford dictionary defines race as; ‘each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics ’. The oxfords dictionary’s definition of nationality, however, is more confusing; its first definition is ‘the status of belonging to a particular nation’, however its second definition is; ‘an ethnic group forming a part of one or more political nations’. From these definitions we can take a few conclusions on the use of race and nationality; Race refers to physical characteristics that can differentiate between peoples such as African and Caucasian; however, nationality can be seen as the belonging to a specific country or even to an identifiable sub culture within a nation. Hence, in the context of this essay when referring to peoples of African origin this must be considered a race, however, nationality may be used to describe peoples of a country or cultural subgroups within a country. These de...
Whether or not America is truly sexist in one way or another is important and central to the argument, it is still made apparent by writers on both sides that many individuals feel threatened due to their sex/gender and writers will use these experiences to make their audience more aware of sexism in everyday life. Raphaëlle Soffe is one such person who feels this way even on heavily policed areas. In her article “Brits in America: sexism, safety and strength” she talks about what she experiences on a daily basis on a college campus. She states that “robberies and attack attempts are frequently reported to local police and, unfortunately, women are often seen as easy targets”. As an example, she talks about a situation where a woman was attacked by a man late at night while going on a run.
Staying and reconciling with Great Britain would have many advantages to the Americans. Preventing war would settle and America's trade would develop with having the relationship with Britain. Obtaining prevented war and good trade would bring emigrants to America and begin to populate. Population would advance the land and begin to raise the value of the land.
The United States of America and England share many similar traits inside their society as well as their culture. Considering that both are first world countries and both share english as the official language. Despite these already known facts, what most people don’t know is that within their society and culture they’re very different. England and America, both powerful countries with similar ways of functioning their societies, are very diverse within their culture and social customs.
Customer service is valued as a competitive tool by many organisations. It gives you the ability to gain customer loyalty while meeting the customer’s expectations. Staff will have many skills and knowledge that will provide a competitive edge. Most organisations are known for the quality of their customer service. This means that they are known for good customer service or poor customer service. However, being known for good customer service will attract customers. It will also attract customers who are usually hard to reach.
“We are not a nation, but a union, a confederacy of equal and sovereign state.” Dear fellow Americans, the British are out here stealing our ships, our goods and our people! These ignorant Brits need to be taught a lesson and learn some manners. The only way that we can do that is to, simply, declare war. They have continued to supply their, own, navy with our population simply because their people, themselves, will not do it. These people are forcing our brothers, husbands, cousins, or uncles to work for their selfish ways as in working for their navy. While our brothers are working, the British runoff trading with Native Americans, providing them with their own weapons so that the Native Americans can attack us. This attacking, and awful
Britain is widely regarded as a Postmodern society, and if this is the case must be subject to two of the central issues of this circumstance: those of first globalisation, then multinationalism. What is it that these concepts constitute that affects contemporary British society? The academic, David Held describes globalisation as "the increasing extent, intensity, velocity and impact of world-wide interconnectedness" - that is the growing extent to which societies, more local groupings and indeed individuals are interdependent, and can be affected by events well outside their immediate sphere of concern. Put simply, it is the decreasing importance of the nation state and its boundaries. It is as a result of this, most would say, that communities external to the nation state, and particularly other nation states, are able to have increasing influence over each other, in a process described as multinationalism.
Throughout life you meet many different people and encounter many different personalities. This at first confused me because sometimes due to this people cannot understand or respect each other's opinions and feelings, but after realizing that there are so many people with different ideals all over the world I realized how close minded my views were. I can even use my home country as an example. As a child I was raised to believe that there is equal opportunity but learned eventually this is not the case in America due to things such as institutionalized racism. Nothing is perfect but there are some things in the world that could be helped or prevented and people often fail to take notice of these problems. Things such as water shortages, energy pollution, and dwindling fossil fuels often fall behind things like what clothes someone famous is wearing. Everyone may not be socially aware of what is going on around them but, I think that people who support my views would agree with me when I say the people who are worried about these kind of problems have to be prepared to think of some kind of solution to these problems. They have to work harder to actually help with these problems and they need the work ethic and selflessness to put themselves aside and do it for the
and see the extent of what it has done, one can only argue that the
So I think of Britain as a place a lot of different types of people
The debate about British Identity has been prominently featured in recent years as a public concern. The foundation of British Identity was based on the act of union in 1801 between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland that created Great Britain. Heath and Roberts describe this identity as “a relatively recent construct and was gradually superimposed on earlier national identities of English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish” (2008:4). The four nations were unified mainly because of the political and economic project of the British Empire that developed a shared agenda and The Second World War which melted the distinctive differences between the constituent nations (Ward, 2004). According to Colley, the interests that unified the nations do not exist and even if they do” they are less distinctive” (1992). Although there is identification with Britishness, it is noticeable that Britons hold a stronger allegiance to their primary nation. The British Identity is decreasing as many writers suggested, and this is due to many different trends and influences such as globalization, immigration and communication (Heath and Roberts, 2008). This essay highlights some of the reasons of the decline in the British national identity and the rise of the consentient nation’s sentiment. This is approached by firstly considering the internal factors of the devolution of power to Scotland and Wales, and secondly the external factor of immigration and will analyze the relationship between age and identification with a nation.
The position of the women have been changing through the centuries. At the beginning of the human race they were always considered to be different, with a lower value, than a man. But this was about to change. One great event was about to come to show the society, that woman are being underestimating. The World War I was a global war at the beginning of the 20th century that affected lives of people all around the world. Even in those parts that were not physically touched by cruel battles and remorseless struggles with many losses of life. Men were sent to fight for their nations on the warfronts and their families left at home under constant fear of an insecure future. From this point of view it seems that there was nothing positive in this difficult period. In Britain the situation was similar. Despite all these facts, the war had also a positive outcomes. It was the time that turned over the lives of British women by remarkable changes. Changes that moved the women slowly, but surely little closer to the position that they have today. We will take a look at the transformations and the progresses that World War I brought to women in Britain in the field of working opportunities, we will take a look at the key event for the suffrage and not clearly positive women’s situation within society, but enthusiasm among women themselves. We will see that this period was one of the most radical, but some of the changes were temporary.
