A mesocosm is a controlled environment which can be used to study impacts on an ecosystem under realistic conditions. They can be applied to aquatic environments to look at the impact of substances or other disturbances such as chemicals, temperature and nutrients on the ecosystem.
Brine shrimps are crustaceans, relatives of fairy shrimps and water fleas. They are also related to lobsters, shrimp and crabs. There are several species of Brine Shrimp including San Francisco, New England and Mono brine shrimp. All of these species belong to the genus Artemia and the family Artemiidae. Brine Shrimp live in adverse and harsh environments such as salt lakes. They could experience high salinity, low oxygen levels, short days or temperature fluctuation. Brine Shrimp provide food for birds along their migratory path. They also rid the water of contaminants like phosphorous, nitrogen and other waste. They are filter feeders and consume various species of algae. In the classroom, placing the Shrimp in natural light will work best. To feed them, add a pinch of baker’s or brewer’s yeast once a week. A concentration of 42.64 ppm will kill 50% of the brine shrimp population. The nitrate has some effect on the life cycle because nitrate-exposed shrimp develop more quickly but most die off before reaching the adult stage. Research conducted by Hollis and Bedding and published in The New Scientist stated the maximum safe nitrate concentration for drinking water is 45 ppm, and these results compare to the 42.64 ppm for Brine Shrimp. Based on the model organism Artemia, nitrate concentrations in excess of 45 ppm can be potentially harmful to human development. The data we found supported our original water hypothesis. My group and I believed that adding ammonium nitrate into our eco-column would ultimately damage the ecosystems. The increase in levels of minerals from the aquatic ecosystem also indicates that the entire column was being destroyed. Through this experiment, I have learned that too much nutrients and minerals within an ecosystem can be extremely harmful to the wildlife. Throughout this experiment the water in our eco column began to turn yellow because of a surplus of nitrogen and phosphorous in the eco-column. Currently, the United State’s Gulf of Mexico experiences an annual, seasonal “dead zone” as a result of hypoxia. Hypoxia is a low level of dissolved oxygen (<2mg/L) in an area of water. Hypoxia is typically temporary and seasonal, but the low oxygen levels can be devastating to aquatic organisms. Hypoxia occurs in many oceanic waters worldwide, but there is a growing area of concern in our Gulf of Mexico coast. Hypoxia is largely caused by nitrogen fertilizer application for agriculture, with heavy concentrations coming from the Midwestern US. Nitrogen mobilizes as nitrate, and is transported via surface water runoff. The runoff enters tile-drain supported ditches, enters streams and joins the Mississippi river, eventually reaching the gulf. Nitrate mobilization is a problem for human health, and ag. runoff is also often attributed to the contamination of surface and well-water sources in rural areas. High levels of nitrates restrict the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen. This can harm humans, and is the major cause of infant methemoglobinemia, or “blue baby syndrome”. The safe drinking level standard is 10mg/L.

From Seaworld’s commercials to the website, they convince the general public that Seaworld is the place to go to see the happy sea animals perform. If Seaworld is such an ecstatic place, what excuse does Tilikum, their greatest well known orca whale, have for the three attacks on trainers? The documentary “Blackfish” was created by the director Gabriela Cowperthwaite because she questioned herself after realizing Tilikum's odd behavior over time in captivity, and if there was any indisputable parts to animal captivity?

Both, people and animals, use the Bays resources every day and have done so for centuries. One of the Bay's biggest resources is its oysters. Oysters are filter feeders which means they feed on algae and clean the water. The oysters feed on algae and other pollutants in the bay, turning them into food, then they condense the food down to nutrients and sometimes develop pearls. Filtering the water helps the oysters grow, and also helps clean the Chesapeake Bay.

In an attempt to introduce an argument of some kind, the filmmaker’s intent is to engage the audiences and to also appeal to their values and emotions. To do this, producers use a number of rhetorical deceives, such as logo, ethos, and pathos, to help get their audience to believe and think in a certain way. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of the 2013 documentary Blackfish, uses these rhetorical techniques throughout the film, which tells the story about Tilikum, an orca whale that killed three professional trainers while in captivity.
The body of the shrimp is two parts the thorax which is the body and the head , the body pieces are connected by the cephalorax and a narrow abdomen. The mouth if the shrimp works with the gills so they can be used. Shrimp have a hard shell that keeps everything together and protects them, its legs, eyes, and rostrum grow out of the hard shell. Artemia franciscana, known commonly as Brine shrimp, are aquatic arthropods within the animal kingdom who can readily adapt to extreme conditions. While they mainly live in saltwater lakes, such as the Great Salt Lake and the Caspian Sea, Artemia are able to survive in most inland saltwater excluding ocean (Gonzalo and Beardmore, 2012). Their main source of nutrition comes from Phytoplankton and microalgae: organisms that require sunlight to prosper. In addition, Artemia reproduces both sexually and through parthenogenesis, processes that require specific abiotic conditions for temperature and salinity*. In fact, Wear et al. (1986) states that higher temperatures are more effective in reproduction and maturation of Artemia. Primarily, this experiment is important for acknowledging the ecology of Artemia as well as their biodiversity in a time of climate change. Understanding habitat requirements is essential in aiding preservation, survival and reproduction.
The location is one of the most critical factors to analyze thoroughly because it helps predict whether the sales of the choosing location will be good or not? Although the Boiling Crab is in the growth stage, it still has to focus on new locations that the owner plan to extend to these areas. As I mentioned in the introduction, the owner plans to open the Boiling Crab in four new locations soon.
I am particularly surprised how the agricultural industry inflicts these problems on themselves, by excessive use of sewage systems and pollutants which find their way to local rivers [Fig 1.]. The trophic state (i.e. the natural nutrition factors) and biodiversity of lakes and rivers are greatly effected by the main nutrients involved, nitrates and phosphates. The transition occurs mainly between a mesotropic state, with an average biological productivity to a eutrophic state where there is a larger production of organisms due to high nutrient concentrations. Tropical reservoirs in particular often become eutrophic.
Nitrogen is used by plants in order to synthesize protein peptide bonds and for cell growth. Not only is this nutrient required in the largest quantity by plants, but it is also the most frequently limiting factor when it comes to productivity in crops. Plants cannot use nitrogen in the air and in the soil system it is lost easily. Because of this plants are forced to obtain nitrogen in the form of nitrate and ammonium from the soil. Too much nitrate can cause a negative effect on the plant including nitrate toxicity. High levels of nitrate are not only bad for plants but can also be dangerous to animals or humans in their presence. Here I discuss the scientific evidence of the effects of nitrate accumulation on plants and the environment and argue that too much nitrate accumulation can be harmful to its surroundings.
