In the article “Academia, Love me Back”, by Tiffany Martinez, the author writes about the stereotyping by her college professor and society in general. She contends that her college professor is biased based on the comments her professor wrote on her assignment. She establishes her academic credentials, describes a biased society against Latinos, describes the racism she has encountered personally, describes her feelings of inadequacy, and makes a challenge to academia at the end. She goes from general biases in society so that readers who have ever felt the sting of judgmental ideas will sympathize with her plight, to specific individual grievances with others who treat her differently because of her race. She gives examples of the professor’s words “this is not your word” and “indicate where you cut and paste” as proof that her professor was biased. She then moves to advocating for herself to prove that she is capable of intelligent language. Next, she closes with empathetic statements about being tired and exhausted from facing biased people. She concludes with the “entire field of academia being broken” and that we must work to fix “the lack of diversity” that is the norm on most college campuses. Martinez organizes her article by focusing on the broad perspective of racism at the beginning and then narrows it down to specific grievances that she’s faced. She gives her credentials in the first paragraph so that the audience will understand her background and what she has achieved. This shows that she is a capable writer and communicator. She then speaks of a society that will not allow minorities to be as successful as white people. Next, she brings the audience into the moment by speaking about what happened to her today. After describing in detail what she faced from her professor’s comments, she transitions into what should happen in the future. Her purpose seems to focus on making the audience aware of the problem and by the end she wants the audience to make a difference and try to change the stereotyping that she is experiencing. Her style is simple, but effective.
She uses adequate vocabulary to establish her ability to write and communicate effectively. She even mentions that she is careful about each word she expresses because she doesn’t want to support the professor’s claims of her inadequacy in word choice. She uses strong, emotional words like “debilitating and painful”, and “bitter”, “doubt”, and “criticized” to allow the audience to feel empathy. She transitions between her ideas with short simple sentences to keep the audience focused on the important items. “Today is different”, begins the specific account of her professor’s words on her paper. “In reality, I am tired and exhausted” is a simple sentence with powerful, honest words. This sentence transitions into her ideas of what should be done to stop stereotyping. Lastly, she uses the pronoun “I” throughout the paper, but shifts to the pronoun “we” in the final sentences of the article. This shift targets the audience and challenges the reader to be responsible for making changes in academia and stereotyping. The simple statements, “We all have work to do. Academia needs work” are strong and
decisive. Martinez offers strong support for her belief that she has experienced stereotyping based on her Latino background. She communicates effectively and clearly with simple sentences, use of strong, emotional words, and organization from general stereotyping to specific stereotyping. Her argument is significant in a culture that has experienced racial and gender biased behaviors for many years. She makes valid statements about how she will have to work even harder to prove herself in a culture with no respect for diversity.

Castro “[has] learned not to back down” (Castro 269) in the face of a differing opinion; this is unlike many other writers. It is for this reason that Castro’s writing inspires me to resist the idea that the type of writing that belongs in “the academy” is not for others to necessarily see, but for the people fortunate enough to read it themselves. The power of words and information is universally essential in all its forms, and this type of communication is vital for any sort of improvement or awareness. The passage about Castro’s feminist professor who writes about the Violence Against Women Act is a perfect example of what Castro depicts as one of the downsides of “the academy.” The essay her professor writes could potentially “help protect thousands of women,” but instead it is categorized as an “academic journal” (Castro 266) and most likely will not be accessed by those in need. A student should never be denied the right to learn and become successful because of a different skin color, or because they speak a different language. “No saco nada de la escuela” by Luis Valdez is a play that discusses the racism in schools. The play starts with students going to elementary school and then ascending to middle school and college. At the beginning the students were not aware of what racism really was because of their innocence. However, the teacher that they had was very racist and bullied the students of color. That experience made the other kids realize that not everyone was the same and because of color or language they should be treated differently. There are five different students who take part of this play, two of those students were white, and there were two Chicanos and one black. That is great diversity of cultures. The teacher that the students have in elementary school was an example of the other professors they were going to have throughout their school years. Very arrogant and not understanding of the minority students. Their teachers were not really interested in teaching the minorities and always showed her discontent of having students of color. Their teachers didn’t believe that students who were part of a minority should be placed in the same classroom as the white students. Maybe that was because they didn’t know the potential a minority student could have. One Chicano student named Francisco never denied his roots and became very successful. He had many obstacles in his learning environment, but at the end he becomes a great example of perseverance. Francisco is the student who I think showed the greatest development in the play. The first three parts of the text present Mary/ María’s, the narrator, recollection of the time when she was nineteen and met José Luis, a refuge from El Salvador, for the first time. The forth and fifth parts, chronologically, go back to her tragic experience when she was seven years old and then her trip to El Salvador with her son, the fruit of her romance with José Luis, twenty years after she met José Luis. And finally the epilogue consists a letter from José Luis to Mary/ María after her trip to El Salvador. The essay traces the development of Mother Tongue’s principal protagonists, María/ Mary. With a close reading of the text, I argue how the forth chapter, namely the domestic abuse scene, functions as a pivotal point in the Mother Tongue as it helps her to define herself.
The American Dream has never been available to minority citizens as easily as it is to American-born citizens. Affirmative action was first implemented around the year 1972, however it was not widely accepted or practiced. During this time society was just getting used to including women in higher education institutions so the concept of including minorities in higher education was almost non-existent. My Beloved World, by Sonia Sotomayor shows the challenges that a first generation, Puerto Rican, lower socioeconomic female had during this time. Through her autobiography she shows the struggles she faced throughout her life, focusing on her application to college, college experience and insight into her cultural background. My Beloved World present the ideology of White Supremacy and other phenomenon’s such as structural inequality, and socioeconomic inequality that interfere with Sonia’s inability to receive preparation for college and these things show the that America has not made good on its promise of equal opportunity for all.

Aunque ella no viene de un movimiento literatura directamente, ella escrita con el concepto de compremetido. En su narrative El Recado ella crea un mujer estereotipical que no puede controlar sus emociones. La titula es eso porque ella viene a ver su amante, pero el no esta, asi ella escribe las cosas que sentia. La perspectiva es de un personaje y ella nunca interacta con otros personajes. En facto la unica descripcion de un personaje otro de la protagonista es de su amante Martin. Habla de otros personajes, pero solamente de sus acciones. Porque ellas es la unica perspectiva que tenemos es sencillo a sentar compasion para una protagonista de quien nombre no aun sabemos. Ella da la descripcion de toda que vea, y mas importante todo que se sienta. Tambien tropos y figuras retoricas dan un tono significante al poema. Estos sentimientos de la portagonista y el tono emocional de la narrativa transporta una tema de una mujer estereotipical y debil quien quiere ser reconocido.

In the documentary Latino Americans – Episode 5: Prejudice and Pride, it centralizes on the success of the oppressed community through significant leaders in that period. Union activists César Chavez, along with Dolores Huerta, playwright Luis Valdez, teacher Sal Castro, US Congressman Herman Ballido, and political activist José Ángel Gutiérrez all contributed to egalitarianism of Latinos across the nation. This documentary reflects on the importance of equal prospects within the workplace, the academic setting, and the social and political features in society.

Eduardo Bonilla-Silva and Sue both demonstrate from their research that Whites do not comprehend the impact of their unconscious biases. These biases towards students of colour in a white-based post-secondary school environment can result in stress and weak interracial relationships. This is an issue since the significance of these everyday actions is not fully recognized and acknowledged. The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria, an essay written by Judith Ortiz Cofer, discusses the racial stereotypes Cofer struggles with as a Latin woman who travels across America. Throughout her life, Cofer discusses her interactions with people who falsely misjudge her as a Latin woman. Additionally, Cofer mentions other Hispanic women she has met in her life, who also suffer with racial assumptions. Although several people would disagree with Cofer and claim that she is taking racial remarks too seriously, racial stereotyping is a significant issue that should not be overlooked in our society. People should not base someone’s worth by their outward appearance or their ethnic background.
In public schools, students are subjected to acts of institutional racism that may change how they interact with other students. In the short story “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by Packer, readers are allowed to view firsthand how institutionalized racism affects Dina, who is the main character in the story. Packer states “As a person of color, you shouldn’t have to fit in any white, patriarchal system” (Drinking Coffee Elsewhere 117). The article “Disguised Racism in Public Schools” by Brodbelt states “first, the attitudes of teachers toward minority group pupils” (Brodbelt 699). Like the ideas in the article “Disguised Racism in Public Schools” Dina encounters institutionalized oppression on orientation day at Yale.
