Akhenaton once said, “When virtue and modesty enlighten her charms, the lustre of a beautiful woman is brighter than the stars of heaven, and the influence of her power it is in vain to resist.” When a girl is created and immersed into this world, it takes a lot for her to be able to build herself into the woman that she desires. With the constant bashing of the people around her, she is forced into the mold of what people want her to be. The poems of this anthology were written for the women of the world, For women to challenge what they know, and to slam the mockery of themselves into oblivion. With passion, and strength, these poems were written to provide insight on the question, “What is a Woman?”
In Brenda Shaughnessy’s “I’m Over the Moon”, as well as Anne Sexton’s “Her Kind”, the challenges that a woman must overcome in her life is mentioned, as well as the negative mold that has been built by society. Brenda Shaughnessy’s keynote was slandering the gender and sexual norms of her time.
