Boston Whaler has cemented themselves as one of the leading boat manufacturers due to their unique and patented hull design. Boston Whaler’s “Unibond” hull design was invented by Richard Fisher and filed for patent in 1957. The Unibond hull utilizes Fishers foam core invention. In his filling, Fisher detailed his invention as part of the manufacturing of “molded plastic articles having outer surfaces or shells of hard plastic backed up or filled with bodies of very light, settable plastic foam. The invention is particularly applicable for the manufacture of structures of some size, such as boat hulls, aeroplane parts, wall panels or articles of furniture in which substantial stresses may be developed in use.“ [1]. Timed perfectly with a strong post-world economy, Boston Whaler was set up for greatness. Eventually, the Boston Whaler portion of Fisher-Pierce was bought by the CML group. After 20 years and some financial difficulties, Boston Whaler was sold to Reebok Corporation, who failed to revitalize the brand and eventually sold Boston Whaler to Meridian Sports. Two years later in 1996, Boston Whaler was bought by the Brunswick Corporation $27.4 million in cash and debt. Today, Boston Whaler continues to be one of the leading boat manufacturers. As technology and the needs of boaters has progressed and changed, so has Boston Whaler. Originally developed as a 13’ skiff, Whalers are built in a wide variety of specifications.
