To fight is to stand up for what is right, break through the walls of what is acceptable, and to have the fire blazing in the eyes of a warrior. Throughout life society has taught humanity to form into a definite way that should not ever change, but through life there has been a small population who are immune from societies spell. The outcasts that must battle to stand up for what they believe is right. In the novels Antigone, Anthem, and in the movie Whale Rider, the main characters fight for what they believe is right by standing up to society's norms the society has deemed acceptable. In the novel Anthem, Prometheus must stand up to society and break the bonds of brotherhood in order to fight for knowledge. As Prometheus realizes his …show more content…
brother's disapproval of his knew found science he and he stands up to them yelling, “You fools!’ we cried ‘You fool! You thricedamned fools!” (Rand 75). Prometheus does not agree with his brothers and their decision purely based on what is acceptable in society, so he speaks out against them. Just purely by yelling at his brothers he has accepts his fate as an individual, forever leaving behind the thought of total unity. Prometheus does so on the grounds that he does not believe in what his brothers are saying and he is fighting to break away from society's mold and for his love of science. While this hero’s act is small it is a grand gesture towards a new way of thinking. This new way of thinking as an individual goes against everything society has taught Prometheus from the day he was brought into the world. Prometheus stands up to the idea of total unity as he explains, “ I am the meaning. I wished to find a warrant for being. I need no warrant for being, and no word of sanction upon my being. I am the warrant and the sanction. Neither am I the means to any end others may wish to accomplish. I am not a tool for their use. I am not a servant of their needs. I am not a sacrifice on their altars” (Rand 94). Prometheus realizes that there is more to oneself than just the community one lives in. He is learning the positives of ego, and lets go of the normalities of unity and starts thinking for himself. Prometheus understands he is apart of what makes up this world, yet is so different from everything about it. By having these ideas this new found man fights for the right of an individual’s self worth, and is no longer letting society bond his soul to the brothers of society. In addition to fighting for knowledge, another young warrior fights for justice and morals. Antigone stands up to the corrupt tyranny of the government in order to fight for the justice of her dead brother. In defiance of the government, Antigone buries her brother due to her believing all dead creations of god deserve a proper burial. Antigone does not deny her morally just crime as she decrees, “I dared. It was not God’s proclamation. That final justice that rules the world below makes no such laws” (203). In order for Antigone deliver her brother his proper burial she must defy the laws and break away from the normalities of this society. She understands the laws of humanity will always hold power over the laws of a tyrant. Antigone does not deny the fact she was the one burying her brother due to her knowing there was nothing she did wrong. All she wants is to serve her brother the honorable justice he deserves, and as she stands up to the maleficent king she is fighting with fire in her eyes for her brother. Though, Antigone is not just fighting for the justice of her dead brother; she is fighting for what is morally right in a society where some many conditions are wrong. King Creon is planning on killing Antigone, but to show the evil king she is morally correct she stands up to the great oppressor and fights back with her words. She is not afraid to die and knows she has done nothing wrong as she says, “Then I beg you: kill me. This talking is a great weariness: Your words Are so distasteful to me, and I am sure that mine Seem so to you. And yet they should not seem so” (204). Antigone is ready for her ultimate fate and she knows it is drawing near. She refuses to obey the law that is morally wrong and she knows she is right. Till her last word this heroin fights to show the corrupt government that moral laws are held high above the laws of mere king. By standing up to Creon she is showing society that normalities must be broken in order to do what is right. Antigone will fight for what she believes until her last breath escapes from her lungs. Also, another young heroine must fight for what she believes in. In the movie, Whale Rider, Paikea must fight through the thick stone walls of gender barriers in order to prove to her grandfather she could one day become chief.
Women are not allowed to be chiefs, yet Paikea, a girl, seems to be the most suitable candidate for the job. Everytime she gets knocked down for being female she gets straight back and takes another hit at the stone wall. She will never stop fighting to show her grandfather he true potential. In the movie, her grandfather throws a whale tooth in the ocean as a task for the boys to see who should become chief. Nun of the boys can find it, but Paikea does. Paikea is destined to be the leader of this immense Brazilian tribe. Know matter how many times her grandfather oppresses her for being female she gets back up again, fighting, clawing her way to her spot. When Paikea leads the whales out to see it is then her grandfather realizes she is a leader. The whale rider has fought long and hard for this moment. Paikea lets go of the whale and falls into the salty water, and when she comes back up she is reborn with the strength to tear down the gender barrier brick by brick. Even though society tells her she can not be the chief due to her gender she refuses to listen and keeps on fighting. The Shero knows she can be the next leader and fights for her title, breaking down every piece of doubt that was once nestled deep inside her
grandfather. The main characters of Anthem, Antigone, and Whale Rider all fight for what is right and break away from the social normalities society is constantly forcing on them. They fight for justice and knowledge, they shatter gender barriers and break the law to do what is morally right. These character are the symbols of what is good about humanity. They show the courage that all people have, dying to shoot out of them at any moment. In life when it is time for person to fight for what they believe is right they will be just like these characters with fire in their eyes and burning in their soul.
He is positive that with his quick brain he can uncover the Unmentionable Times and live the way they should have all along. His thoughts are identical to Ayn Rand advice in her short essay “How Does One Lead a Rational Life in an Irrational Society?” since he is the one to lead a rational life in Anthem. In a house that belongs to the Unmentionable Times holds Prometheus, a new name that Equality has given himself, meaning a god who took the light of the gods and brought it to men and taught men to also be gods. Within those walls, he plans to be like Prometheus that the books state: Taking the light to men and teach them how to live a rational
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, Prometheus is a man who must overcome his collective society to find himself. Prometheus is born into a society where everything is equal. Without concern for consequences, he loves a woman and looks and discovers knowledge of the past. After his discovery is rejected he flees to the forest, and his lover follows. In the forest is where he finds the meaning of the word I. There is where he says "... we crushes all beneath it, and that which is white and that which is black are lost in the gray of it," he talks about what his society did to the differences of man, after he had run away. After Prometheus finds the house he says, "My happiness needs no higher aim to vindicate it. My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end," which means his happiness is special and achieving this happiness is his final goal. Lastly, "I am, I think, I will," is the final sign that Prometheus has acknowledged himself as one being. Prometheus' quotes show that his emergences from his past, longing for happiness and realizing that he is a being make Prometheus the...
Family therapy is often needed when families go through transitions such as separations between parents and divorce. According to research, “the power of family therapy derives from bringing parents and children together to transform their interactions” (Nichols, & Davis, p.18), as problems need to be addressed at their source. The children who are the most vulnerable, when parents decide to separate, exhibit symptoms which are exaggerations of their parent’s problems (Nichols, & Davis, p.18). Frank and Walt Berkman are the examples of how children cope and adapt to the stressors of family separations such as marital separations and
In the end of "Anthem", Prometheus comes to the realization that his society's teachings and ideas were not helpful in advancement to the society. Ideas like individuality, that the society tried to squash out of its people, is beneficial to the society as a whole because men are meant to think for themselves. In the book Prometheus made the light bulb back when he was in the society, but once he showed it to the World Council, they but him in jail. After this incidence he realized that no matter what brilliant things he invents, it will never be something that particular society can use. At first he is confused, but realizing that he was acting like an individual made him see that maybe society is the evil one and he is the good one. All of this made him realize that maybe he is not meant for this, and he is thrown out into the uncharted territory. He learns that men are meant to think for themselves, and that if they do society will become more advanced and they will be able to move forward instead of staying at the same spot forever. This is how he realizes his "sins" were actually good and that men are supposed to think for themselves.
In Anthem, the narrator, Prometheus, lives in a community in which all of the children born that year live in the same house until they turn fifteen. Then they are assigned a job and live with the people that share that occupation. This keeps the people from having an emotional attachment to someone like they would have with a family. Totalitarian rulers often control the thoughts and beliefs of people as well. The citizens of the community are forbidden to question or explore things that are unknown to other citizens.
Anthem is a story of man’s struggle to be free and to fight the masses of conformity. It tells of human nature and the want to gain all the knowledge that one could possibly attain. Man loses his safe haven and his security when he lets this lust for knowledge overpower him and lets it be seen by others. He becomes vulnerable Like Johann Faust, Prometheus sells his life for wisdom. Unlike Faust, however, Prometheus is expelled from his society but gains his freedom of individuality and his freedom of knowledge and the ability to understand. In Anthem, Prometheus and Gaea sin against society to become singular and understanding much like Adam and Eve’s sin against God when they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge to gain wisdom; as a result, they can be compared to each other by there desire for learning and by their damnation.
The collectivist dictatorship in Anthem has a strong moral grip on its subjects. The hero Prometheus is able to break that grip through his devotion to his own happiness and finally through his recognition of the existence of individuality.
Clashing swords, miraculous survivals, pain of loss, and heroic sacrifice are all terrifying yet thrilling moments in a battle. The strong possibility of death and the frailty of human life add into the suspense of battle. Yet the reasons behind the wars, death, and suspense can be overlooked. The stories behind the warriors who have died will not be told again, but the stories of warriors still alive are what give the men strength to continue fighting against impossible odds. Ultimately, the reason of why a man would risk his life in battle is for someone, or something, he loves. Like in Gilgamesh and the Iliad, women help encourage and influence the protagonists to be the heroes and protectors they are meant to be.
Equality invented something that no ones ever seen before. He built something to make a difference in society and to brighten the world, light. Light is what he invented and it was a miracle when it worked. Another similarity between Equality and Prometheus was their sacrifices for their values. No matter what circumstances they both went through, they stuck with it and did not give up because they believed that they could make a difference in society. They did not want to give up because it was something that they believed they could do to make the world a better place for themselves and others. All though Prometheus was punished by Zeus for all time. Equality knew that if he was discovered he would be punished for what he invented but he didn’t care if he got punished or not. When Equality brought his invention to the C...
Image sitting on the beach one July morning. The sun is beaming down and decide to go for a swim. As you approach the water, you see a whale unusually close. You begin to get nervous as it continues to approach the shore. However, you aren’t worried because you know that they are confined to the sea. As the whale comes near you can see it clearly. Just as you think that it will turn around, the whale walks out of the ocean!
Captivity is the state or period of being imprisoned, confined, or enslaved, according to Wiktionary. Every year, marine parks and aquariums, like SeaWorld, make billions of dollars through ticket sales. SeaWorld estimates about 70% of their total revenue is due to their performing killer whales (Jeffs). People visit from all over the world to encounter killer whales up close. “Their beauty and power, combined with willingness to work with humans, have made them legendary performers” (Gorman). In recent years, humans have gained the ability to tame and train these creatures. Killer whales should not be kept in captivity simply because it is cruel, unnatural, and dangerous.
The origin of modern day whales, a mystery that has puzzled paleontologists for years, may have just been solved with the discovery of an ankle bone. This discovery might sound simple and unimportant, but the bones of these ancient animals hold many unanswered questions and provide solid proof of origin and behavior. The relationship between whales and other animals has proven to be difficult because whales are warm-blooded, like humans, yet they live in the sea. The fact that they are warm-blooded suggests that they are related to some type of land animal. However, the questions of exactly which animal, and how whales evolved from land to water, have remained unanswered until now.
The story Whale Talk takes place in a small town in Washington. I believe this stories main purpose is to show the physical and psychological effects abuses has on kids, and show there are evil people in the world, but eventually their evil will catch up with them. No matter how bad things get, a good person will eventually win over an evil person. There is multiple examples of, multiple types of, abuse, not only child abuse, but also domestic abuse in adults and teens alike.
Conflict is apart of the model of society. It is a very common component of reality and also in stories and other forms literature. In stories, it adds sensation and stimulates the minds the people who are reading it. Characters can be in conflict with another character, an object, or themselves. When characters are having conflicts however it is more than just a mere disagreement but it is a situation in which the characters detect a threat to their physical, emotional, power and status well-being.
The Humpback Whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, is part of the marine mammals group. They are found in oceans all over the world, they live in open waters. Even though they are mammals, they do not live on land (Monterey Bay Aquarium). Humpback whales are known for their magical song that can travel great distances. These gentle giants are omnivores, their main diet is krill. They are mostly found near coastlines feeding on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish. Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding water closer to the Equator. Humpback whales are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke to propel themselves through or even out of the water! Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appears to be gestures of affection. Even though it takes more than one year for a humpback whale to grow fully, mother whales leave them after one year (National Geographic).
