Boston Ballet Refuses to Fall
What happens when a ballet company’s classic Christmas tradition is unwrapped, discarded, and replaced with a glitzy and glamorous moneymaking expenditure? Many dance enthusiasts are left with this lingering question as The Boston Ballet struggles with a recent announcement from the Wang Theatre, its lifelong performance home, that next year’s production of the Nutcracker is being replaced by a touring show of the infamous Radio City Rockettes.
"Im pretty certain this decision was driven by money, which draws the question in everyone’s minds: Which is more important, tradition or money?” said Andrew Kaminski.
Kaminski is a Boston Ballet II member and performs in the corp de ballet with the company. He joined this apprentice position in August of 2003 and thinks Mikko Nissinen, the Boston Ballet’s new artistic director, is doing great things for the company.
" I really like the direction we are headed in but unfortunately Mikko has been dealt some unfair dealings. I am just grateful the company has been so open with us about everything,” Kaminski said.
According to Kaminski, the company was informed of what was happening with the Wang Theatre at the end of October. During this time, a company meeting was held and a Boston Ballet Memo was distributed to the dancers from Valerie Wilder, the Executive Director of the Boston Ballet.
“Basically the Wang informed us they had signed a note of intent with Radio City. We were immediately notified after this. We were told the Wang wanted to bring in the Rockettes for monetary reasons. Touring companies are more profitable. The Wang can charge them more plus the tickets are more expensive,” Kaminski said.
The memo to the company included general facts about the Nutcracker’s current situation and its history. It also had a section titled, “Further Talking Points,” which expressed the company’s opinions on the situation.
“In choosing to align itself with a touring production, the Wang Center is undermining a 35- year-old tradition and the work of a resident ensemble with year- round presence in the community. The Wang has thus placed commercial interests over cultural purpose, which is inconsistent with its mission as a not-for-profit,” the memo stated.
The Boston Ballet Company is a non-profit organization, which hosts a dance school that trains young children through adults and a renowned ballet company that has artistically entertained the city since 1965. On their IRS form 990 filing, the company stated their objectives for the fiscal year beginning November 1, 2003.
The ‘Teacup Ballet’ is one of the first and best artworks Olive Cotton has exhibited outside Australia. It was created in 1935, a Gelatin Silver, 37.3cm x 29.6cm, photograph. Six identical teacups are laid out precisely, they each have pointed, triangular handles and slender bodies. Each teacup is placed on a circular saucer. In the centre, background two teacups are placed diagonally to each other, their handles pointing in the same direction, on the left hand side. In the middle ground, three teacups are placed in a diagonal line, parallel to teacups in the background. This time the teacup handles all point to the right hand side. In the foreground, right hand corner, there stands alone one teacup, its handle facing towards the left, pushed a little more inward, than the others. In the background, there is a light shining through lighting up the teacups, and shadows are formed. A curved line is also shaped contrasting the light from dark.
Jacob Grimm, a board member argued that GELT is not in it to “count beans” but to enrich the lives of others throughout”. In my opinion, I believe that Janet Dobbs proposed budget was shut down because she lost sight of GELT’s mission, and it is to “provide professional quality theater at an affordable price for the families of the greater Euclid area”. Even though the budget did well to address the debt that GELT had inherited, it left out the steps that should be taken to rid the debt, increase revenues while keeping the mission of GELT in mind.

Alvin was captivated by Lester’s work, which focuses on building a strong body, and made the executive decision to start his dance training in 1949 when he was eighteen years old. Because Lester Horton’s dance company embraced diversity, and accepted dancers of all ethnicities and backgrounds, Alvin was given the opportunity to do something great with his One of the first concerts ever produced by his company was titled Blues Suite, which was a well-received depiction of poverty in the deep south set to a soundtrack of blues music. This concert was an integral part in defining Alvin Ailey’s choreography technique, which is loosely based on the technique associated in ballet with strong legs and feet, while still maintaining a more evocative, modern-style torso.

Dr. Maya Angelou’s notorious aspects in her personality have formally made recognizable and has affected her true style of poetry in a positive manner, along with the literary era her poetry is from and her past life experiences and influences.
Li’s passion for ballet shows on and off stage through his arabesques, flexibility, fouettés, grande jeté and pirouettes that were nothing less than perfection. I understood that becoming a dancer requires commitment, passion and having a great memory as there’s many moves, routines and ballet terms that you need to learn. When I was performing on stage, I felt free and that I could own the stage as it felt like it was my second home. I also felt complete within myself just as Li felt. To perform on stage, you need to be light and graceful along with connecting to the music using precise steps, poses and formal gestures. The film used dance, music, scenery, and costumes to portray a story characterised by Li’s dance. Classical ballet dancers require the utmost grace and I’ve found that you also need a tremendous level of concentration and memory. This portrays when his choreographer Ben Stevenson asked Li Cunxin to replace the main male role due to an injury on the day of the performance to memorise new dances and perform them in front of an enormous crowd. Many of my performances have been in a group where we all need to be in sync and work together. Ballet has been an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers possess the idea that ballet began with tutus and pointe shoes, but it wasn’t until the nineteenth century that this opinion was observed. Ballet has come a long way. It has survived the turmoil of many wars and has changed itself by accepting new ideas and impressing the audience with its unique stylistic views.

Performances for smaller communities were too hard to accommodate for because of insufficient logistical resources, budget costs and facilities too small making it hard to hold performances in. A solution that was suggested was to have dancers from The School to perform in these smaller communities but even that came with its own set of complications. A lot of preparation goes into developing a performance; choreography, props, set design, wardrobe etc. however, the Company didn’t have enough resources or strong dancers to pull it off. Not to mention the scheduling of dancers was too difficult considering every student dealt with different academic requirements. They had so much increasing demand and they had all these smaller cities that were willing to pay for the accommodations and the food etc. as well as ready sponsors yet Alberta Ballet did not possess the right formula or enough assets to address the
When one thinks of a ballet they hear soft rhythmic notes and see elegantly dancing ballerinas softly tip-toeing around the stage. This is also what people in early 1900’s expected to see when they planned to attend a ballet. However, a couple of motivated artists in 1913 literally planned to change the design of ballet, music and dance forever. On May 29, 1913 a ballet named The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris, France. The original title as it translates from Russian to French is; Le Sacre du Printemps, meaning the rite of spring, but the literal translation from Russian to English means “Sacred Spring”. The ballet and music were composed by Igor Stravinsky, with the help of Nicholas Roerich, who proposed the general idea behind the ballet to Stravinsky. Roerich wanted to put into motion the ideas behind pagan pre-Christian rituals in Russia. Together the two created the story line behind the ballet; a sacred pagan ritual where a young female dances herself to death and is then offered to the “Gods” of spring to make them happy. The music was composed by Vaslav Nijinsky and the ballet was produced by Sergei Diaghilev for the Russian Ballet. This ballet was so different from what the spectators expected to see that it caused a riot. The Rite of Spring turned the tables of ballet in every sense: the dance, the music and the general idea of ballet was modernized by the group of artists who created and produced it.

The many aspects that make the classic The Nutcracker ballet a delight to watch were demonstrated by the graceful and talented dancers at the Benedum Center’s evening performance on December 28. Beautiful dancing and the music of Tchaikovsky brought the stage to life as the story unfolded with Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum home as the opening scene. The daughter of the Stahlbaum family, Marie (Hannah Carter), receives a nutcracker and pointe shoes. The nephew (Joseph Parr) tries his best to impress Marie, but he cannot, because of his hideous appearance that resulted from the evil rat king’s curse. As everyone falls asleep, the house becomes enchanted under a spell and Marie travels to the Land of Enchantment with her beloved nutcracker, (Joseph Parr), who has now come to life and revealed himself and the nephew. She goes on many adventures with him and meets people from all over the world who dance for her. At the end of her journey, she awakens in her house which has returned to normal and is now in love with the nephew, whose curse was lifted. She wonders if it was all a dream, until she finds the scarf she received from the Land of Enchantment. In this ballet adapted by E.T.A. Hoffman, Marie learns that there is more to a person than just how they look.
