Humans are very complexing and they behave in ways that cannot be explained. It can be their past that affects the way they act or possibly the influences they encounter. In Markus Zusak’s revelating novel, Book Thief, a young girl named Liesel lives in a terrible time in Germany. Tough times lie ahead of the young girl, and Death is always lurking around the corner, ready to consume yet another soul to put to rest. However, through so many struggles in the novel, there seemed to be a silver lining that wasn’t always seen. Zusak illustrates that man needs to see life isn’t possible without death which brings an understanding of human behavior which spurs a justification towards their fate. The acknowledgement towards a person’s nature or characteristics …show more content…
Yellow is used to show how humans can experience great things and it drives them to things that they would never think they’re capable of. “The road of yellow stars”(102). Yellow shows the sense of enlightenment towards the situation at hand. This is showing how people can be like a bright star to the situation at hand because it shines over the darkness which can also relate to death. This can be showing that yellow relation corresponds with positive attitudes in life which steers away from death is going to happen. There are many stories behind each person and colors can symbolize the emotions felt within the person and thus can be a root of why they act in certain ways. “So many humans, so many colors”(309). Red is equivalent to anger, black is equivalent to death, and white is equivalent to purity. These small portions of colors relate to the roots of the human mind. The mind has the power to control what’s going on, and Death is the only person who notices the soul which obviously contains the mind of the person. This is why humans need to have that self realization of living their lives to the fullest because death can come at any moment.Black relates to death which causes destruction and uncertainty for humans. Life directs humans to new paths and they need to understand that death can come at any moment. Higher powers can cause stress to those who live under them and causing their actions to lead them to the fate of death.“Above me, the sky eclipsed- just a last moment of darkness- and I swear I could see a black signature in the shape of Swastika”(491). The capability of humans can easily be taken away through their actions, and the signature of a higher power can show this. The black signature is Death signing the agreement with the higher power to the people’s souls. Death is relative black for a person and the lack of
In The Book Thief, author Markus Zusak communicates an over-arching topic. This topic is; all objects convey dark tones. The idea is transmitted into the writing subtly throughout the excerpt, as well as the story.
In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak the narrator is Death, who shows itself as sympathetic and sensitive towards the suffering of the world and the cruel human nature, through its eyes, we can get to know the heartbreaking story of Liesel Meminger an ordinary, but very lucky nine-year old German girl; living in the midst of World War II in Germany. In this book the author provides a different insight and observation about humanity during this time period from a German view and not an Allied perspective, as we are used to.
’’Liesel observed the strangeness of her foster father's eyes. They were made of kindness, and silver. Like soft silver…..upon seeing those eyes, she understood Hans Hubermann was worth a lot.’’ (Zusak,34) Liesel saw kindness in Hans Hubermanns eyes which made her feels more comfortable with him rather than Rosa Hubermann.
In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger, an orphaned little girl living in Nazi Germany, evolves partly through her numerous literary thefts. At her younger brother’s gravesite, she steals her first book, The Grave Digger’s Handbook, which teaches her not only the method to physically bury her brother, but also lets her emotionally bury him and move on. The theft of her next book, The Shoulder Shrug, from a book burning marks the start of Liesel’s awareness and resistance to the Nazi regime. As a story with a Jewish protagonist “who [is] tired of letting life pass him by – what he refer[s] to as the shrugging of the shoulders to the problems and pleasures of a person’s time on earth,” this novel prepares her both for resisting the
In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini uses the colors yellow, black, red, and green to show negative effects. In literature, yellow means decay. “His nails were yellow-brown, like the inside of a rotting apple” symbolizes that Rasheed will do some dangerous things with his hands (53). He ends up strangling and abusing his two wives, Mariam and Laila. Using yellow as the color of his nails could also foreshadow his death towards the end of the book. It is important to the story because without Rasheed acting the way he did towards the women, they would not have grown as strong as they did mentally. The women had enough courage to stick up for each other and against Rasheed. The color black symbolizes death, mystery, & chaos. In Part Two of the novel, Mammy received the news of the death of her sons. The days after the funeral, Mammy laid in bed most days and “she wore black” (145). It was a devastating time for her and she was falling apart. She wore black to represent the death of her sons and the misery she was going through. She also suffered from Outward Manifestation Inward Strife which occurs when the body shows signs of emotional stress. “Chest pains and headaches, joint aches and night sweats, paralyzing pains in her ears, lumps no one else could feel” (141) shows some of the signs Mammy was having during her time of stress. She was taken to the doctor but they found no
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak’s 2005 novel, uses various stylistic devices and conventions to portray key ideas of the value of lifе, the beauty and brutality of human nature and the power of words - highlighting not only their ability to be used for good, but also reminding the reader that words can also be responsible for great evil, during the second World War. Through the meticulous use of narrative voice and having Death as the narrator, then incorporating analepsis, prolepsis, motif, symbolism and figurative language, Zusak is able to highlight these key ideas by successfully taking an innovative approach to creating a captivating and complex text.
The central aspiration of any literary work is to captivate the reader and immerse them in the vastness of their imagination. An author is able to establish a deeper connection between the reader and the text through the incorporation of various literary elements. Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief, uses many aspects of literature to shape the novel and exquisitely portray the events of the story. The imaginative and unique use of elements such as irony, foreshadowing, and point of view certainly contribute to the grandeur of this book.
We watch death explore the beauty and ugliness of the human race in Markus Zusak’s book The Book Thief. We watch as Liesel, Hans, and Rosa do everything they can to help out a group of people who were treated with such disrespect during this time period. This group, the Jews, were beaten for taking food that was given to them, and when they died no one would even care. But, these few people gave them food, a place to hide, a sense of belonging, and and a reason to live. They have to work day and night, and do everything they can. Even though people aren’t so beautiful at all times, there is still hope. As we have learned in this book that even when 99 percent of humans aren’t so marvelous there is still that one percent that is to delightful that it would touch anyones heart.
Markus Zusak conveys the message that although putting others before one’s self is a very difficult task, it will always benefit more than it will regress in his novel, The Book Thief. In the beginning of the book, Liesel is separated from her only family in an instant, and the narrator explains, “There was the chaos of goodbye. It was a goodbye that was wet, with the girl’s head buried in the woolly, worn shallows of her mother’s coat. There had been some more dragging” (Zusak 25-26). It is clear that Liesel 's mother did not want to part with her, especially after losing her son moments before, but she knew it was the best option for Liesel’s security throughout the war. She was willing to sacrifice her children in order for the reassurance
There is a difference between the colour yellow and when an object is yellowing. Yellowing suggests fading and decaying. Blanche says “These are love-letters, yellowing with antiquity.” (Williams 41). The letters shows the downfall of the upper class, as all that is left of Blanche’s love is these letters, which are disappearing like a vapor and a mist.
Orange portray Adulthood, orange is defined with these positive connotations of sociable and optimistic and negative is superficial and insincere, with my theory you are very optimistic about starting your life as an adult and very sociable with others and optimistic, in the story Prince Prospero is very insincere about his people just locking up himself while they died. White Old age, white has the positive meaning of innocents and purity, and the negative meaning of white is stark and fastidious. Violet imminent Death has a positive connotation and negative connotation of purple, so we would just refer back to the part. Black Death itself has a positive connotation of protection and comfort and negative connotation of depressing and pessimistic, this goes back to my theory of as this is a very sad and negative event, and for this story, it was the same for Prospero guest, and with the other color in the room red was the embodiment of the anger they were feeling, which cause their
The Book Thief Short Essay: The Use of Foreshadowing, Irony, and Symbolism in The Book Thief
Emotional Adaption Since the beginning of time tragedy has shaped our history and molded us a species. Today one hears the stories of the millions of people who died as a result of the holocaust and wonder what emotions they must have felt. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief follows the story of a young girl and her loved ones living just outside of Munich during World War Two.
(Cherry) Why does the narrator begin to obsess over the repetitive patterns though? According to Kendra Cherry, yellow is also an "attention getting color used to draw notice". So, not only is the narrator physically in a yellow room, but psychologically her mind is drawn to the yellow walls. Thus, the wallpaper is mentally holding the narrator captive as well as her demanding physician husband. However, we never see the narrator push her luck with the husband.
He expresses this unique usage of words and turns them into pictures or scenarios in your head it just grabs at you and dwells on you so you have no choice but to follow along and read this book because like it or not it is made to have really good cliffhanger page after page. Markus Zusak’s words had created scenarios where it made you feel for liesel when rudy died ,made you sense something bad was gonna happen. The wildest thing the author did is make the reader fond of death and picture him as a friend telling the story a “worker of villains” to be exact but keeping him fascinated by humanity.
