The Essential Drucker is a compilation of Peter Drucker’s selected insights and writings on management for the past sixty years. The book has twenty-six selections which were divided into three parts: Management, Individual, and Society. The first section, Management, highlights the different ideas about management such as the origin and definition and its use and application in the business organization. The second part of the book focuses on the individual. This section talks about the principles that an individual can learn and imbibe, and what skills he or she must develop in order for him or her to effectively manage a business or an organization. This part of the book shows how the business or organization, and the individual managing it can be involved and can contribute to the external environment. Peter Drucker named this compilation The Essential Drucker because he chose and incorporated the most vital concepts from his works which would add value to the reader when it comes to managing the business or organization, managing one’s self, managing other managers, and managing subordinates.
Aside from learning how to manage myself specifically my time, I have also encountered some concepts that I believe are of use to Seaoil. One of these concepts is about communication. While reading the section entitled Communication Is Perception, Expectation, and Demand, I have had a deeper understanding of communication. It was stated in section fifteen that more and more people in the workforce will have to manage themselves and have to place themselves where they can make the greatest contribution. The section A Challenge for Individuals also said that entrepreneurial society individuals face a challenge which is to exploit as an opportunity the need for continual learning and re-learning. This then made me think about the whole process of the program. The Management Trainee Program specifically Seaoil’s Management Trainee Program allows us fresh graduates, to know ourselves better by allowing us to have a deeper understanding of what and who we are as an individual, by making us discover our strengths, our own way of performing and accomplishing tasks and meeting goals, and assessing if our values align that of the company as well as letting us gather more information and store more knowledge. It will not only make us aware, understand, and experience the different departments and operations of the company. Upon starting, it first made me wonder why unlike other MT programs of other companies, we do not directly get immersed in the company’s operations and why do we even have to read a book and submit a book report. But after several sessions and after reading The Essential Drucker, I have realized that this MT program
Things have changed in the business world since Peter Druckers early years. Most of the changes that have occurred were of no surprise to him. His knowledge of management and the functions of organizations is truly amazing. In the novel, The Definitive Drucker, by Elizabeth Edersheim, Drucker’s ideas on collaboration and leadership stood out to me. Within collaboration, there needs to be a very high level of communication and the correct skills. Leadership is critical to any organization and it involves personality along with the ability to make decisions. These concepts of leadership and collaboration can be directly applied to myself and my team. Looking at myself concerning these topics has allowed me to see where I can improve.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).

Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. Communication is something that most people do at some point each day, and is an important part of life especially in a working environment. “The concept of communication is an essential part of every profession, and it is required to foster and maintain healthy relationships”( Jasmine, 2009, para. 1).
Businesses play a significant role with the economies of all countries, whether developed or developing. It contributes to the welfare of the society through the satisfaction of needs, provides a source of livelihood to millions of people worldwide. Businesses do not operate in vacuums but operate within business environments. The events in the environment of a company have a direct effect on the success or failure of that company. According to Jain, Trehan and Trehan (2009), business environments can be categorized in two: (1) internal business environment; (2) external business environment. Institutions and organizations are usually in a position of controlling their internal business environment. By doing so, they gain the ability of affecting their institutional performance. On the contrary, it is difficult for a business to control the external environment; however, businesses can identify in advance the opportunities and threats presented by the external environment and take decisive actions to ensure its continued success (Jain, Trehan & Trehan, 2009; Goyal & Goyal, 2009).
In today’s competitive business environment, effective management plays a crucial role. The article Five Minds of a Manager by Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg, identify some important aspects of effective managers. According to the author, “The world of the manager is complicated and confusing.” Consequently, mangers need to think above ordinary employees. In particular, managers should, think global and act local, collaborate through competitions, be agents of change and maintain order. This paper provides a reflective review of the article Five Minds of a Manager by Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg.
Management is considered by different people in different ways but it’s the views implemented by Peter Drucker that are the foundation of management for the past, present, and future. Druckers three tasks, coming from his The essential Drucker book, are what businesses use to from successful management teams in their companies. Another thing to consider when talking about Ducker’s view on management is management’s connecting to liberal arts. Management is a liberal art that is seen to be very similar to the Core Curriculum offered here at Oglethorpe University. Thus Drucker would support the liberal education that is offered here at Oglethorpe University. Management can never be truly defined but it is the ideals and views of Peter F. Drucker that give businesses a form of management to mold their companies by.
Consequently, the most important object to learn is that external factors, coupled with the internal environment factors have a decisive impact on the functioning of the organization. Managers nowadays do not actually do what a manager really should do back in the eighties. Changes that occurred in the new economy, the increasing use of technology in business, and the effects of globalisation towards business world have led management into a whole new dimension. New managers are expected to be able to manage on an international scale, act strategically, utilize technology, establish values, and of course, act responsibly as well. (Crainer, 1998) Henry Mintzberg once asked, "What do managers do?" After conducting his research based on a study of five CEOs, he concluded that managerial work involves interpersonal role, decisional role and informational role. And the fact is that, managers get things done through other people. Therefore, managers are required to possess certain skills and competencies which allow them to play these roles effectively and efficiently throughout the four functions of management. (Mintzberg, 1998)
Management plays a significant role in how business operates. The diversity of approaches to the theoretical and practical background of management has come up with several versions of what is meant by such key words as management and organization. The academia views expressed in relation to management theories take a different role than that prescribed to managers. There has not been any concrete definition of management even though the classic definition of Henri fayol still remains in contention to be the preferred choice after eighty years. In the context of what is required I would like to elaborate on the following journals.
Over the past hundred years management has continuously been evolving. There have been a wide range of approaches in how to deal with management or better yet how to improve management functions in our ever changing environment. From as early as 1100 B.C managers have been struggling with the same issues and problems that manager’s face today. Modern managers use many of the practices, principles, and techniques developed from earlier concepts and experiences.
