The book HIDEOUT, written by Gordon Korman, begins with an adventurous group of middle school kids that come to the rescue of one of their friends to hide a fierce Doberman before a crooked businessman can bring him harm. The story starts out in the beginning of August, in Cedarville, New York, with the school friends all heading off to summer camps but they did not know they would be sneaking a dog along with them. There are two main characters in each of the summer camps and the story takes place in all three of these camps. These summer camps are in the woods of New York’s Catskill Mountains. They are Camp Ebony Lake, Camp Ta-da and Camp Endless Pines. These three camps may be in the same woods but they are spread out and are miles away from each other. There is a different theme to each camp and it makes the book more interesting because the setting is always changing. The main characters in this story are 6 friends from Cedarville Middle School, a crooked businessman, and a Doberman Pincher. Griffin Bing is, “The Man With The Plan,” and he organizes the missions this group of friends get involved in. Ben Slovak is Griffins best friend and he has a ferret that goes everywhere with him to help him with his narcolepsy or sleep disorder. Pitch Benson is an expert at mountain climbing and she helps them get into impossible places. Melissa Dukakis is a computer expert which comes in handy for eves dropping. Logan Kellerman is an actor and he is good at distracting people. Savannah Drysdale is an animal whisperer which has helped them get past guard dogs. S. Wendell Palomino or, “Swindle” is a crooked businessman who has caused these friends a lot of problems. Luthor is a huge temperamental Doberman who be... ... middle of paper ... ...se and no one in this book has super powers. There is also nothing about their situation that couldn’t happen to a person in real life. I think that the only thing that makes this story different from non-fiction is that it would not be as entertaining if it were real life events. It would be hard to think there would be this many twists to a real life story. My favorite part of this story was when Griffin hid Luthor in his luggage bag and the Doberman chewed up all of his clothes. When they arrived at camp the camp instructor thought that he was poor and told him he would help get him clothes to wear. The clothes that he would bring him were out of the lost and found. Every day Griffin had to wear some dorky shirt with Care Bears or a picture of a bride and groom kissing and framed with pink and red flowers. He was embarrassed but he wore them anyway.

The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.

Just a valley of nothingness for miles. What was I to do with people I wasn’t even friends with for four days? The mere thought of it consumed me. Then I hear the scoutmaster shout, “Okay boys! We’re going to kick things off with a bang. Your first activity for today will be to locate your camping gear!” Immediately I thought to myself, “what? Are you kidding me?” The day shifted from bad to worse, and I didn’t think it was going to stop there. So here I was with my troop, maps in hand, the mixture of fear and anxiety overwhelming us. We contemplated our game plan for a while. Another scout, who would later become my best friend, broke the silence. “Well, better get going before it gets dark. Don’t want to be sleeping out in the open.” Reluctantly, the rest of us got up and followed.
