In Play Ball by Matt Christopher, Carter, a baseball player finds trouble when his cousin moves. In the beginning, Carter and Liam are living life to the fullest. They just finally finish playing in the Little League Baseball World Series. After a fun and adventures day Liam heads home from Carters house. When Carter finishes his dinner he heads over to Liam’s so they can do homework together when, BAM! The news hits that Liam will be moving from Pennsylvania to California after Christmas.
At this point in the novel the story has changed to an alternate point of view. In the meantime, Carter and Liam spend their last few months together as neighbors. Both kids are torn by the move as soon as it happens. Carters mom makes him bond with his new neighbor Ash. Ash which is short for Ashley is a boy the same age as Carter. For example, Liam heads to baseball tryouts when he remembers the name of his new Little League. San Fernando, the same Little League that beat he and Carters team in the World Series last year. On top of that, Liam fell down trying to hit a homerun embarrassing himself in front of millions of people and the San Fernando Little League. With all this distraction Liam has a bad tryout. Luckily two twin boys help Liam get used to his new town and Little League.
As time goes by, Ash and Carter start to become better friends. He now sees that Ash is a huge asset to their team and they need to work together to make it back to Williamsport. Liam starts adapting to California with the help of his new friends the Driscoll twins. After meandering around his new town for a while Liam starts preforming in practice but is still nervous to face his enemy Phillip DiMaggio. Phillip taunted Liam after what happened in the World Series. He Skype’s his cousin Carter and Carter gives him advice and the confidence needed to stand up to his
