In the book “look me in the eyes” by John Elder Robison, he talks about his life with Asperger’s and the challenged he faced as a kid. The first thing I noticed when reading the book that John Elder had a hard time looking people in the eye. Which is very common with kids with Asperger’s. During the time her was a student teachers didn’t know what this was so they handled the situation differently by yelling at him trying to force him to look them in the eye. If I was the teacher I would go about this situation differently I would try to figure out why he can’t look me in the eyes. By yelling at the student the teacher may be causing them to have anxiety which can cause any student to want to look away. Students sometimes think if a situation
In the case of having a student like john elder in the classroom one would need to make accommodation to the standards for him, accommodations simply means the add to or enhance the standards for his learning. If I had a student like John Elder in my classroom I would, depending on the subjects, find a way to challenge him so that he doesn’t feel board and hopefully by challenging him it will motivate him to do better. Most students with Asperger’s have difficulty processing questions when being asked and need time to answer them so when I would be preparing for a read aloud where the student will have to answer questions at the end outload. I will accommodate john by giving him a list of discussion questions before we read the book so that he can have the extra time to process the questions I might ask and won’t feel overwhelmed when it comes time to call on students. Also by giving him the question before hand he might feel more confident to volunteer and raise his hand to answer a question. I could also provide alternates to reading outload in front of the
