Boogieman
Boogeyman opens with one of the most effective scare sequences in recent memory, one that recalls us to the fears of childhood and sets the tone for the rest of the picture. In the traditional old, dark house, eight-year-old Timmy (Caden St. Clair) is in bed, too scared to sleep. Commonplace items in the room take on a sinister appearance until he turns on his bedside lamp, revealing the hulking shape across the room to be just a chair strewn with clothes and sporting equipment. But when he turns the lamp back off, the shape begins to move toward him. Switch the light back on, and the shape collapses to the floor, an innocent bathrobe. It’s a clever illustration of the ways in which, as children and even sometimes as adults, we can believe that the forms we see in a dark room might be alive and wicked; the ways a fertile imagination can even trick us into believing we see it shift its weight, sharpen its claws, and lick its lips in anticipation. This being a horror film, it turns out that there's more going on than an overactive imagination. Timmy causes a clatter that attracts the attention of his father, who comes in and lectures him about being scared of the Boogeyman. Daddy is then, of course, dragged into the closet by an unseen figure, never to return.
15 years later, Tim is an friendly but haunted young man, played now by Barry Watson, whose appearance and manner do a lot to suggest the boy within the man. Watson’s nose and roundish face not only match the shape and proportions of the child actor, they connect with our understanding that Tim hasn't progressed emotionally much beyond his childhood, while Watson's likeable, ordinary-guy quality helps us to empathize with Tim even though he’s quite possibly crazy, plagued by delusions and flashbacks to his childhood terrors.
Tim's fears haven’t lessened with the passage of time. He lives in a studio apartment with no nooks and crannies for a monster to hide in, his clothes hang on a steel rack next to the living area, and even his refrigerator has a clear glass door. His precautions at home can’t protect him forever, though, as his girlfriend Jessica (Tory Mussett) has invited Tim to spend Thanksgiving with her family. After the necessary investigation from her father, Tim goes to his room to await a secret visit from Jessica.
In “My Brother Sam is dead”, James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier portrayed Tim as a very brave man, smart man, and quick to grow into his role as the man of his house. Would you let a man with scissors for hands in your, that you found in a dark evil-looking castle? I know I wouldn’t, but a mom named Peg would. Peg, who is very empathetic, decides to go sell Avon to the evil mansion across the street, but then finds a boy with scissors for hands and decides to take him home. Edward seems to be doing fine in the community, but is soon seen as a monster because he is framed by a bully name Jim. The movie is Edward, the protagonist, trying to recuperate his innocence and he won’t stop until he does. Throughout the movie, director Tim Burton used the stylistic elements of juxtaposition and symbolism to show the character’s personalities and to show how some places in the story are opposites.
Tim Thomas decided to drastically change his life by giving everything he has to seven people, in order to save or improve their life in order to “make up” for the seven lives that were lost as a result of his carelessness. He gave a part of his lungs to his brother, a piece of his liver to a social worker, a kidney to a hockey coach, his home to a mother of two children but there were still two more that he needed to help. So he took his brothers IRS credentials and found Emily who was in need of a heart and Ezra who needed two eyes. He determined that both were good and deserving people that were worthy of the gift so he committed suicide in order to enhance their quality of life.
Boo Radley, also known as Arthur Radley, is the scary, evil creature that lives in the creepy old house down the street from Jem and Scout, and is misjudged at first. Jem and Scout, two main characters, first see Boo as some sort of scary monster. Jem described him in the first chapter as “...six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks...” and said “...he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained- if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off...” Jem also mentioned Boo had a “...long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.” Scout and Jem also call Boo a “...malevolent phantom...” As if that isn't bad enough, the kids hear and tell horrible stories about Boo. In the beginning of the story, Boo represents the unknown. The children wonder about Boo and his strange way of life, but really have no concept of who he is. At first, the children ask questions about Boo with regards to his "weird" living style. When this does not satisfy their curiosities, they make up games and stories about Boo which present him as being a monster. At one point, the children invade the Radley property in hopes of finding some clue which will better explain Boo's character
The film The Boogey Man, is a Horror film, directed by Stephen Kay, that is a take on the classic ‘Boogie Man’ or monster in the closet who is the main antagonist of the film. It is the second film of an apparent trilogy. One particularly important scene is the scene at the beginning with the main character, Tim Jensen, at a young age going through a series of mysterious occurrences in his room at night to then witness his dad being taken by the Boogie man. Stephen uses the five aspects Lighting, Dialogue, Character’s actions, Camerawork and Soundtrack to emphasize the overall dark mood that is tempted to make.

In the year of 1977, King created the pseudonym, Richard Bachman to publish additional books (Biography Today). The masquerading secret was so well-kept, no one knew until eight years later, when readers noticed the same writing style as King (Kehoe, Biography Today). Bachman’s first book, The Rage, was published in 1977 (Biography Today). Succeeding The Rage, Bachman published The Boogeyman in 1978 (Biography Today). In The Boogeyman, Lester Billings is a hard-working young man with three deceased children, a defenseless wife, and a guilty conscious.
Tim Burton’s films depict his lashing back from a tortured childhood. Somehow, his movies tell his story. His first big budget movie, Batman, was a huge hit. He then chose to make Edward Scissorhands, his most personal film. Despite the fact that Batman was a hit, movie executives were reluctant to give Burton authorization. His use of cinematic techniques displays his unique style.
Throughout the length of the movie, I was taken back to my childhood when there were monsters in my own closet. Over the years, the monsters have all died and been replaced by just as scary skeletons, so my closet is still full. However, to a young child monsters are still lurking in the shadows, and they still make the floor creak. The approach taken by the writers of this film is one of uniqueness and of originality. By successfully juxtaposing the situation between monster and child, the writers were able to confront a touchy subject head on. This was reached through a combination of differences represented by the monsters in the movie and between the child’s impression of monsters in real life. We all know that in real life, to a child, monsters can be very real, intimidating, and extremely terrifying. The monsters in the movie are shown to be emotional creatures, with feelings and concerns. Appropriately enough, the largest monster named Sullivan is best friends with one of the smallest monsters named Mike. Sullivan the bear, being the largest and scariest of monsters, turns out to be the one with the largest heart and concern for the well being of a small human girl he names Boo. Tim Burton's style compared to others is quite unique. His many films do not give off the same mood and feeling that audiences are used to with child films. With some of his role models being Edgar Allen Poe and Ronald Dahl, it's no surprise that his films mix children ideas with a sense of darkness, and even at times creepiness. Tim Burton combines these feelings of child movies and darkness through the way he uses lighting, shots and framing, and to spread his message.
In the book Monster, we see the story of an eleven year African American boy known as Kody Scott get involved in the world of gang violence. Kody had been living in South Central Los Angeles all of his life, he grew up on Florence and Normandie. Kody was learning about gang life before he was even in a gang. The book starts with Kody graduating sixth grade, he is really excited because it is the day he will be initiated into a neighborhood gang, the Tray Eights, which is part of the Crips. Weeks before his graduation Kody felt proud of himself because he had flashed a gang sign in a school photo. His first initiation to become a member of the Crips was to kill someone from their rival group. Kody learned that a gang was for life and that killing the enemy was an act of survival. With the years, Kody builds up his name as Monster by killing people without remorse. Kody’s only aspiration in life was to become an OG gangster.
On August 25, 1958, Timothy Walter Burton was born (“Biography”). Burton had a painful childhood in which the relationship with his parents and brother was nonexistent (Morgenstern). Through his intense feeling of isolation, his visual talent began to develop. The comfort found in hobbies such as writing and drawing led him to attend the California Institute of the Arts which led him to his first job in any artistic field at the Disney Animation Studios (“Biography”). Burton has since been referred to as one of the most visually gifted writers, artists, and filmmakers that America has seen (Hanke). His short stories, poems, and film scripts are centered on an inner darkness which he has been slowly acquiring since his childhood. He throws himself into everything he writes and makes even the simplest characters have a deep, complex meaning. His famous darkness and symbolism is shown in his book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. The book contains a collection of his short stories, poems, and illustrations about a variety of fictional characters that can be compared to Burton and his life. Tim Burton’s home life and previous hardships have made a significant impact on his work. In my paper, I will draw parallels to his life and work as well as prove that there is reasoning and beauty in the way he is.
Early in the film , a psychologist is called in to treat the troubled child :and she calmed the mother with a statement to the effect that, “ These things come and go but they are unexplainable”. This juncture of the film is a starting point for one of the central themes of the film which is : how a fragile family unit is besieged by unusual forces both natural and supernatural which breaks and possesses and unites with the morally challenged father while the mother and the child through their innocence, love, and honesty triumph over these forces.
Kody Scott, also known as “Monster” for his viciousness in beating of a man and further crimes, forms a realistic and brutal picture of gang violence in America. Throughout his story, Scott views his gang participation as the only viable means of survival. Killing is done through the necessity to promote oneself in order to become an O.G., or Original Gangster, the pinnacle of gang member status and achievement. The urge to become an O.G. seems to be paramount in Scott's eyes, and he outlines his plan: first he must build his reputation, then his influence as part of his set, and finally as a “promoter” of the Crips (Shakur, 1993, pp. 14-15). By age eleven Scott's sole desire is to become a gang member of his local set, the Eight Trays. He disregards education, at one point stating how he paid no attention to his middle school teacher, focusing only on the streets and his “homeboys” as source of lifestyle and adventure (Shakur, 1993, pp. 3-4). He clearly reaches his goal, putting the entirety of his mental and physical being into being a gangster, even though it leads him to a life wreaked by violence and prison sentences.
The quick cuts between the shots of characters wandering throughout the mysterious basement to people running down the dark, shadowy school hallways creates a feeling of worry and nervousness in the audience. As each scene builds suspense, the music becomes louder and expands upon the uncertainty in horror situations. In the next scene, the director zooms in behind the two characters as they’re slowing creeping down the hallways. Suddenly a loud crash is heard and the characters instantly turn around as seen in figure 3. The mid shot provides an image of the fright in their faces. This clip startles the audience as the characters are unexpectedly frightened by the alarming noise. The trailer ends with one final scene of Bird Fitcher falling to the ground and out of nowhere some kind of monster grabs her face. This leaves viewers completely shocked and wondering what the outcome of this horror film will be.
