In everyday life it appears that the body is overlooked in its relation to the mind. This notion of body and mind separation is not something that necessarily sits well with people. The debate can sit on either scientific knowledge or religious beliefs. Currently this is what we deal with when this sort of debate occurs. With the various belief structures prevalent in humans we can’t assume argument is stronger than another.
For myself I lean more towards the side of the religious belief structure. Your soul is more what makes you who you are. Your personality, social interactions, and morals are dictated by your soul. The character in this reading, Christina finds herself losing “some essential control or coordination,” (Sacks Page 3/12). And Alexandra Howson’s The Body in Society looks into the overall relationship between the body and mind. Your body and mind most commonly work together on most tasks. However this is not binary and the mind can arguably work without the body in the picture. But what is the functionality of a mind without its body its a memory bank with no available forms of expression. So the ideal is the body and mind working simultaneously “Successful interactions...may be achieved through managing and controlling one’s body,” (Howson Page 48). The way others perceive your appearance is all about how you present your body and mind relationship.Perception of your body correlates with the idea of body image and self-esteem. The way you look or appear to others can either lower or boost your self esteem. Your body was given to you and it 's just a matter of what you do with this “information.” Luckily if you believe there is something that leads to “high levels of body dissatisfaction,” (Howson Page. 25) you can essentially work with the body for your common goal. If the mind/soul is unhappy is has the power to change body image, however the body can also fight this urge. If the body comes back and doesn’t “change per se” the body can essentially encourage the mind to love the body

In the article “The Mind as a Function of the Body”, Taylor divides his article in a number of sections and explains clearly why dualism, or the theory that the mind and the body are separate is not conceivable. The mind-body problem can be a difficult issue to discuss due to the many opinions and issues that linger. The main issue behind the mind-body problem is the question regarding if us humans are only made up of matter, or a combination of both matter and mind. If we consist of both, how can we justify the interaction between the two? A significant philosophical issue that has been depicted by many, there are many prominent stances on the mind-body problem. I believe property dualism is a strong philosophical position on the mind-body issue, which can be defended through the knowledge argument against physicalism, also refuted through the problems of interaction.
For Swinburne, the soul is essentially what our mind is. It is the part of us that analyzes information, thinks on it, and decides on a course of action. Whereas the brain exists as a sort of intermediary between our soul and the physical world. The brain feeds our soul information of our surroundings based on sensory input. However, it is important to stress that Swinburne believes that the soul is not responsible for the functioning of a body, the life sustaining functions are carried out by the brain. Given this divide, we can see a system taking place wherein the soul serves our higher mental thought and the brain keeps the soul informed and regulates bodily function.
According to Plato, the body and the soul are separate entities. The soul is capable of existing before life of the body and after death of the body and it is constant, unchanging and non-physical (invisible). The soul resembles what is divine, immortal, and always remaining true to itself. The body, however, resembles what is human, mortal, and destructible. The body is changing and never able to maintain its true identity (Plato, 80b). Due to this radical difference between body and soul, their relationship is can be described as antagonistic. In Phaedo, Plato says that body always hinders the soul from possessing truth and intelligence. Therefore if, by death, the soul can pursue divine and unchanging truth without being distracted by bodily desires, death is the real liberation or purification of soul from the body (Plato, 67c-e). This definition of the soul is embodied in a rational framework. In other words, Plato arrives at his conclusions through deductive reasoning and ideals. He believes that the body contributes to cognition only by the senses, only in which "seeing and hearing are neither precise nor clear" (Plato, 65b). Thus, senses are fallible and all true knowledge comes by way of reason and rationale. I do not think that the mind and body are the same thing. Both from arguments relating to my own beliefs, and with supporting arguments I hope to have thoroughly explained why I feel this way. I just don?t see how something as unique as the mind, with so much nonphysical substance to it, can be a part of the brain, an object which is so definitively physical. Although I feel the two are separate, this does not mean that I think they have no connections at all. The mind and brain are, without a doubt, a team. They interact together and run the body, however, they just are not the same thing.

Having a lack of self acceptance can cause men and women to spend a meaningless amount of time loathing on their imperfections, which can also degrade their self-perception on their bodies. Women who have a hard time looking at themselves in the mirror are in a constant battle with their inner demons, telling themselves that they are not beautiful enough. For example, in the article, "Out-of-Body Image" by Caroline Heldman, she says how, "[Women] are more likely to engage in "habitual body monitoring"-constantly thinking about how their bodies appear to the outside world . . ." (65). Women can spend a futile amount of time feeding negative comments to themselves about their appearance, which can heighten their chances of becoming bulimic and anorexic. Once women start to over-analyze their bodies, it can become difficult to reverse their mindset to generate positive feedback about themselves. Likewise, when men lose their confidence in their self-image, their self-perception can get misconstrued and suddenly they can only recognize their flaws. For example, in the article, "How Men Really Feel About Their Bodies," the author mentions how in general, men are in a constant competition against other males to improve their bodies so that they can survive in the male society ( Spiker, 73). Men are always under intense scrutiny regarding their bodies because they are engendered to be physically strong and built, and that is where the stigma begins in the male society. In order to sustain in the male domination, men are constantly trying to rebuild their bodies to match perfection. When men see others that are more built, their self-perception slowly starts to degrade their confidence, and that is when they have the difficulty of accepting themselves. Since Descartes many philosophers have discussed the problem of interaction between the mind and body. Philosophers have given rise to a variety of different answers to this question all with their own merits and flaws. These answers vary quite a lot. There is the idea of total separation between mind and body, championed by Descartes, which has come to be known as “Cartesian Dualism”. This, of course, gave rise to one of the many major responses to the mind-body problem which is the exact opposite of dualism; monism. Monism is the idea that mind and body one and the same thing and therefore have no need for interaction. Another major response to the problem is that given by Leibniz, more commonly known as pre-ordained harmony or monadology. Pre-ordained harmony simply states that everything that happens, happens because God ordained it to. Given the wide array of responses to the mind-body problem I will only cover those given by Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz. I will also strive to show how each of these philosophers discuss what mind and body are and how each accounts for God’s influence on the interaction of mind and body, as this is an interesting distinction between them, as well as the important question of the role of substance. This is important, I believe, because it helps to understand the dialogue between the three philosophers.
The mind has an incredible power. We see it as we go through our everyday activities, constantly displaying the wonders of logic, thought, memory and creativity. I believe that the Mind and Body are two separate entities and have different properties. Because I believe this to be true I am in support of the Difference Argument of Dualism. The difference argument deals with the mind and the body and tries to explain how they are not the same thing by distinguishing them to have different properties. The mind is private and is only observable to that person and the body is public and observable by all. Protesters of this argument try to say that the mind and body are not distinct and are the same thing or that they are two separate things but with the same properties.
