Introduction This lab will evaluate the body composition of the subject. This lab includes measuring BMI, girths of the body, skin folds, and hydrostatic weighing. BMI or body mass index is important to measure because it categorize degree of obesity of the subject.(Adams and Beams 273) As BMI and the degree in obesity increase so to does the risk of chronic disease. These disease include hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and metabolic syndrome. In this lab girths around the body will be measured and put into ratios.(Adams and Beams 281) These ratios such as the waist-to-hip ratio evaluate the increase chance of the subject developing a heart attack, diabetes, gallbladder disease, and stroke. Skinfolds are measured to …show more content…

The subject removed their shoes and stood as tall as they could with their back to the wall with their chin tucked 2. The tester then pressed the stadiometer onto the head of the subject and the subject then stepped out from underneath the device 3. The tester then recorded the height to the closest 1cm 4. The subject then removed everything they were wearing down to their underwear 5. the then subject stepped on to the scale 6. The tester then recorded the weight to the nearest 0.1 kg 7. The BMI was then calculate with this equation BMI= body mass (kg)/body height (cm) Chapter 24 Measuring Girth Equipment measuring tape and scale 1. The body weight was recorded to the closes 0.5 cm and the height was recorded to the nearest 0.5 …show more content…

The upper abdominal girth was then taken at the most narrow part of the body in-between the bellybutton and the bottom the sternum 7. Hip girth was then measured at the thickest part of the gluteal muscles 8. These two measurement were taken to the closest of a 0.5 cm and were put in a ratio (W:H) calculated by the equation wiast girth/ gluteal girth=(W:H) Chapter 25 Skinfolds Equipment- caliper, maker and metric tape measure 1. The subject is prepared being hydrated and not overheated the subject should also take off the appropriate amount of clothes 2. A cross was placed at each site that skin folds and were measured these sites include the triceps, subscapular, chest, axilla, suprailium, abdomen and thigh 3. A the measurements are taken the right side of the subject 4. When the measurements were taken the tester pinched the marked cite an the measurement was taken for at least 4 seconds a cm away from the cross at about half the distance in between the crest and the base of the fold 5. Three measurements are recorded for each spot and the median was recorded Hydrostatic Weighing 1. The tester recorded the weight, height, and age of the
