Should Blue Valley Implement a School Uniform Policy? 1 out of 5 public schools are requiring uniforms in school. A uniform is an identical outfit or style worn by members of a given profession or organization. Do you believe uniforms should be required in school? Some believe uniforms should be implemented in school because they reduce gangs in school, create an environment where all students are equal, and they increase school safety. On the other hand, others believe uniforms should not be implemented because they diminish individuality, religious issues, and they violate the right for freedom of expression. For the reasons of diminished individuality, religious issues, and violated rights for freedom of expression, Blue Valley schools should not implement a uniform policy. Uniforms should not be implemented in schools because they diminish individuality. The reasons why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence backing up thus claim is said by Robyn Silverman, “clothes provide a vehicle, a benign vehicle, to allow them to express themselves, and say I’m different, without having to approach riskier ways” Another piece of evidence was a study conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada. They found …show more content…
that clothing is “a crucial form of self-expression” and that “allowing students to choose their clothing is an empowering message from the schools that a student is a maturing person who is entitled to the most basic self-determination” (ProCon.org,1.) My last piece of evidence to conclude my first claim is the case of Richards v. Thurston, in 1970. This case was about a boy who refused to have his hair cut shorter because of the school’s uniform policy. The US First Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that “compelled conformity to conventional standards of appearance” does not “seem a justifiable part of the educational process” For these reasons school uniforms should not be implemented in Blue Valley schools. On the other hand, uniforms are reducing gangs in school. The reasons why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. My first piece of evidence is a study conducted by Long Beach, CA, after having their uniform policy for two years. Vandalism decreased by 18% and drugs decreased by 69%. Another piece of evidence was a study conducted by a peer at Sparks Middle School, in Nevada. The peer found that after a year of implementing a uniform policy the schools police data decreased by 63% in police log reports, and in gang activity, student fights, graffiti, property damage, and battery. My final piece of evidence is an another study which was conducted by a peer in 2010. They have found that uniform restrictions have decreased 12% of firearm incidents and a 15% decrease drug-related incidents from other schools who do not have uniform policies. For these reasons school uniforms should be implemented in Blue Valley schools. Another reason why uniforms should not be implemented in school is because of religious issues. The reasons why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence is students in Luton are unable to wear a jilbab, a traditional Muslim gown, because of school uniforms (Spark,2.) jilbab’s are long robes which cover the head. My next piece of evidence is following the jilbab’s issue. In 2004, a law was passed in France to ban jilbab’s and other religious symbols/traditions in school (Spark,2.) In addition to these pieces of evidence, my final piece is involving parents. For generations of parents have mobilized children into certain shirts, ties, blazers, ect. because of their heritage/religion and now because of uniforms parents are unable to do so anymore (Spark,2.) For these reasons school uniforms should not be implemented in Blue Valley schools. On the contrary uniforms are eliminated social classes in school. The result of uniforms are beginning to create an environment where all students are on an equal social levels, regardless of their background. The reason why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence is from Professor Brunsma. He states “people were arguing that it would level economic inequalities... and create an atmosphere in school where students would feel part of something bigger than themselves” (Spark,3.) The next piece of evidence is from a principal at Stephen Decatur Middle School. He has found that after enforcing a uniform policy there has been a change in the school. Principal Rudolph Saunder states “students behave better when they’re dressed alike, that they fight less and focus on their schoolwork more. Plus, the uniform puts all students on a more equal social footing, regardless of whether they come from comfortable middle-class households or one of the group foster-care homes that lie in Decatur’s attendance zone” (Viadero,1.) My last piece of evidence is another quote. Justice Minister, Brigitte Zypries states “a national school uniform was a simple solution to prevent such problems in the future and mask the differences between rich and poor” (Spark,1.) For these reasons school uniforms should be implemented in Blue Valley schools. My third and finally reason why uniforms should not be implemented in school is because they violate the right for student’s right of freedom of expression. The reason why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence is the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. This amendment represents that all individuals have the right to express freely. My next piece of evidence is an event which happened on breast cancer awareness month. On October 2013, The students at Friendly High School in Prince George's County, got in trouble for wearing pink shirts to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over 75% of the students got an in-school suspension for participating in this activity. The school believed the students were breaking the school's uniform regulation. My last piece of evidence is teachers are teaching things that students aren't even allowed to do. A student at Chicago junior high school, named Kyler Sumter, states that “They decide to teach us about people like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony and Booker T. Washington... “We learn about how these people expressed themselves and conquered and we can't even express ourselves in the hallways” (ProCon.org,1.) For these reasons school uniforms should not be implemented in Blue Valley schools. Although uniforms may be a poor choice, uniforms are increasing school safety. The reason why I propose so, is because of the following evidence. The first piece of evidence is uniforms prevent the possibility of students hiding weapons under baggy clothes (ProCon.org,1.) The next piece of evidence is found from a superintendent in the Lodi district of New Jersey. Frank Quatrone, has found that as a superintendent “when you have students dressed alike, you make them safer. If someone were to come into a building, the intruder could easily be recognized” My final piece of evidence is from Long Beach, CA. Schools have found that after having a uniform policy for two years’ assault and battery has decreased greatly. Assault and battery has decreased by 34% (ProCon.org,1.) For these reasons school uniforms should be implemented in Blue Valley schools. In conclusion, there are many ways to debate about the topic of school uniforms.
Although some may believe that there should be uniforms in Blue Valley schools because they reduce gangs in school, create an environment where all students are equal, and they increase school safety. Others believe uniforms should not be implemented in schools because they diminished individuality, religious issues, and violated rights for freedom of expression. Many might be conflicted by these sides but I continuously believe uniforms should not become a policy. For the reasons of diminished individuality, religious issues, and violated rights for freedom of expression, Blue Valley schools should not implement a uniform
policy.
Public school K-12 must implement school uniforms across the nation to bring the benefits of a decent education system. There will be less bulling, which will enable students to feel safe. There will be no gang related issues. Parents will not have to pay lots of money for their kids’ clothes. Also parents will not have to worry about what the kids are wearing to school. There will be less stolen valuables from the students. Students will be disciplined causing them to focus more on school, preparing them for a bright future. Females will not be sexually harassed and not bring unwanted attention. There will be less peer pressure to wear clothes that is in style or brand name. School uniforms must be implemented by public schools, K-12, because of the benefits it that come along.
It moreover debates the effects on a student’s intelligence and development. I chose the topic “should students have to wear school uniforms” and the leading concern here is whether children, kindergarten through high school, should be required by schools to wear a regulated uniform. I am on the side of implementing school uniforms into all schools systems across the country. My initial reasoning for choosing this side was based on my own personal research and experiences. However after reading up on the topic on procon.org I found that I agreed with many of their reasons listed. The first reason I have for being pro uniform in schools is because School uniforms keep students focused on their education, not their clothes. The second reason is that School uniforms make getting ready for school easier, which can improve
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms at pre-K through high school levels are an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality. To begin, school uniforms are economic. When schools have a uniform policy, it makes it easier on the children and parents.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
for the past decade, schools, parents and students have clashed over the issue of regarding to attire. middle schools should require uniforms because It keeps gangs and violence from forming,Cost less money than trendy clothes, Lastly uniforms keeps kids from getting bullied I think that schools should have uniforms.
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. School is a place to learn. Outside of school, self- expression is limitless. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. Having uniforms in schools helps erase the defined line of the social classes. Typically, popular kids in the higher social classes wear the trendiest clothing...
...n our public schools today - they may seem like a good suggestion, but when looked at closer, all uniforms do is disguise the center of attention of the real concern that need to be successfully worked out. If security is a worry, we shouldn't be looking to a uniform to rectify the issue - if the concern is students not concentrating on school work, or getting meager grades, again, uniforms should not be seen as a way out. We have a duty to teach our children as much as we can in safe surroundings, and those are grave concerns that cannot be resolved by putting all children in the same attire. If all the children are wearing the same clothes, you still have a question with security and poor instruction - and now you have a student body that is being taught not to express their individuality. Uniforms in some cases, add to a school's concern, they do not answer them.
Did you know that as many as twenty-five percent of the nation?s pubic elementary, middle, and junior high schools have successfully implemented a school uniform policy? (Isaacson, 1998) School uniforms greatly benefit both the students and faculty by creating an atmosphere in which the students are able to get the most out of their education. I believe that all students should wear school uniforms regardless of whether or not the school is public. Below are clear-cut arguments in favor of school uniforms.
A uniform is a standard set of clothes that is worn by a group of people. These people may be members of an organization or a group of people having the same ideas. There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. School uniforms are a controversial issue in schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy mandating school uniforms, while many more are still considering the change. School uniforms create an atmosphere of equality in which the students are able to achieve to their best, while attaining the most out of their education. School uniforms should be mandatory to unite the school community as one, to instil discipline among the student body, and to eliminate distractions that will help students focus more, which in turn will help our society.
How do you feel? School uniforms are taking over schools. And no kid wants to have to wear something they don’t like, or feel comfortable in. And that's why it is absolutely critical schools do not require school uniform, because it takes away a kids individuality, they don't improve academic performances, and they cost a lot of money.
Read on Additionally, it’s unfair to assume that students can’t make friends with people who are dressed differently than they are. Students are already capable of crossing boundaries without required identical clothing, and schools can encourage this with leadership activities and group discussions. So in conclusion I do not think students should have to wear school uniforms, but I digress we all disagree on something right?
Should school uniforms be added or taken away from schools? If kids go to a school with school uniforms it would most likely reduce bullying. At www.naesp.org, it says “In a 2013 survey by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and uniform manufacturer Lands' End, 86% of school leaders said uniforms make "a significant, positive impact on peer pressure," and 64% said uniforms reduce bullying”. This
School Uniforms Should Not Exist Private schools have required school uniforms for many years now. In today’s public school system, many of them have switched to or considered school uniforms due to troubles happening in the school system. Public schools should not require or change to school uniforms because it goes against self-expression, it does not reduce bullying, and students hate them.
Finally, Joyce will summarise our arguments, convincing you, without a doubt, that school uniforms MUST be enforced in all schools. Point 1 (Brian): Having school uniforms will greatly lift the feeling of teamwork and sense of school spirit and belonging, and is a benefit for students. According to SafeSchools.edublogs.org, school uniform programs make it easier for students to develop a sense of belonging at school because greater attention is given to who they are instead of what they wear. School uniforms will make students feel that they are part of school and not whatever new trend they are wearing, which is beneficial to them. Another example is from an article on www.rjmccarthy.com, which tells us that logos on school uniforms enhance spirit and pride, and creates a more “community” feel among students.
I strongly agree that school uniforms are necessary because it creates and identity, avoid the potential of bullies and insults, saving time and money and helps students to be prepared for adulthood and in working
