It is yet another thing for Canada to be proud of. A moment where it brings Canada all together to appreciate this occasion, indeed it increased Canada’s unity and it is a great aspect of Canadian sport history. It also awards Toronto Blue Jays and Canadian baseball fans what they have been waiting for, a World Series won by a Canadian team. The Blue Jays two win-streak in the World Series characterizes Canadian baseball. The Toronto Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992 against the Atlanta Braves 4-2 and went on to retain their title in 1993 against the Philadelphia Phillies with 4-2 record. The following essay will state the facts and statistics on the Blue Jays’ two Series, how it affected Canada in a positive manner within the country and how Canada was affected outside the country. It will explain the pros and cons of the two championship titles won by the Blue Jays.
In 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays went to the World Series as the American League Champion against the National League Champion the Atlanta Braves, the Series opened in Atlanta where Toronto lost their game one of the Series 3-1, faith was not lost as the Jays went on and win the next three games 5-4, 3-2, 2-1. By this time, the fans had real high faith, and even though the Braves dominated the fifth game 7-2, if the Blue Jays win one more the title is theirs, and so it was when the Jays won the sixth game 4-3 winning the 1992 World Series. Canadian Baseball had never been so successful before. When the 1993 season comes, the Blue Jays once again end up first place in their division with a 96-67 record and won all the playoffs games to advance to the World Series for a second time in a row against the National League Champions the Philadelphia Phillies. On July 27 1959, A new York attorney named William shea had an idea of putting a new baseball team in new York since the dodgers and giants had left for california.So on march 1st 1961 His wish was granted.The new York metropolitan baseball club or “the new York mets” were introduced into the national league.The name of the team was chosen by owner Joan Payson.The other names that were put into thought were the rebels, skyliners, nybs and avengers just to name a few.On April 11,1962 the mets played their first game in franchise history and lost 11-4 to the St Louis cardinals.The first season was a miserable one.Manager Casey Stengel led the mets to a 62-100 record,The worst record in major league history.After a couple of more losing seasons, The mets finally made a move and signed pitcher Tom “the franchise”Seaver,one of the best pitchers who ever played the game. They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.
As the decade opened up with the year 1950, the Yankees were celebrating an American League Pennant and a World Series victory from the previous year. It was apparent in 1950 that the team had not taken too much time off as the team posted a 98-56 regular season record, winning their second straight Pennant and a trip to the World Series where they would match up against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1950, the Phillies were known as the Whiz kids because of their youth and amazing talent, but in the series against the Yankees they were swept in 4 games thanks to Joe DiMaggio- a legend in Major League baseball- and Phil Rizzuto- a shortstop who would enjoy one of his most productive seasons as well as the honor of earning American League MVP. Whitey Ford, a rookie pitcher for the Yanks, also enjoyed a stand out career, winning all 9 of his starts and losing only one game in relief. (Baseball History)
The 1919 World series resulted in the most famous Scandal in Baseball history. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the series against the Reds and were banned from Major League Baseball. (“History files-Chicago Black Sox”) All eight players were expelled in an attempt to save the purity of the game. The White Sox lost the opening game of the series nine to one, and then ended up losing the series five games to three. 1910 to 1920 was the one of the greatest decades for Major League Baseball. Many amazing events occurred during this decade; although, some devastating and extremely sad events also occurred. Half of these years were taken up by war, even many Hall of Fame players served. This decade still ended up being a great one for Major League Baseball. From Hall of Fame greats to Negro League pitchers, this decade produced greats. The 1910’s also set up the 1920’s for amazing players too.

With increasingly negative views on the position of the United States in the Cold War, the Miracle on Ice and the gold medal win lifted the spirits of the nation and brought hockey into the American spotlight.
