Sometimes I wonder how it feels not to know what the world looks like, or how green the grass might be, or even getting the full experience of tasting the foods in the world that bring such comfort to one 's heart. But it is sad to say that this happens to be a blind person’s interpretation on life every day. But with the new technology coming out every day, the blind will no longer have to feel excluded from the world. Dr. Dennis Hong, the founder and director of RoMela, came up with the thought of,” What if a blind person could physically drive an everyday vehicle?” When I saw this TED talk it automatically touched my soul to the point that I knew I had to research more. To make the blind be able to drive a real life car a reality, it is …show more content…
This allows for the vehicle to get an estimate on where you are at all times. It will basically get the vehicle ready for any type of sharp turns or construction. Another component to perception would be cameras put on all sides of the vehicle. This helps the car to detect the actual lane that the car is in, so this prevents swerving from lane to lane or bumping into other cars as your driving. And one last component would have to be lasers on the front and back of the vehicle. This is going to help you detect the random objects in the road that could possibly mess up your car frame. This will also protect the driver from anyone crossing the street or even any major potholes in the roadway.
When Dr. Hong was trying to come up on how to perform this very difficult task of how to incorporate a blind person in a real driving car, he knew he had to have two things, instructive and, or informative feedback to the actual driver himself. He was trying to see what would possibly be the easiest form of task for the driver. Because if you had too much go on, then it could in some way distract the driver. So he was trying to see which of these would help the driver in the most efficient

Dennis Hong came up with this idea, not only to help the blind in becoming one with everything, and every other human being in the world. The Dr. came up with this idea so it could help, but also push for technology to help on other things. For instance the Airpix would have to be just used for driving. You could probably actually take an art class, and feel what that image is. The gloves with the vibrating elements, could take on another idea of helping the blind walk a little more efficiently. Without having to bump into everything with a stick. Which can sometimes be very dangerous, depending on where you could be walking to. All this technology like Dr. Dennis Hong had said can even be put into making cars a safer and better vehicle to travel in. Just think if every car had a vibrating mechanism telling you, when you are about to hit something. Are say for instance you wanna set the car in cruise control, instead of it halfway being in cruise control, because it is just monitoring the speed. It would actually steer the car for you going down the highway. Now that is what i like to call a true virgin of cruise control. Even if this idea does not go into place in the real world, it will still help spread the ideals of newer, safer technology out there. This research has really opened my eyes to how big an imagination can spread, and open doors to bigger and brighter ideas. This idea is still being brought into existence, but like Dr. Dennis Hong said all you need is
During my childhood I was diagnosed as having poor eyesight and was prescribed glasses to assist with my vision correction. I realize how blessed I am to have had that as an option. I was always in awe of the environment and creatures who inhabited the various areas of nature. The sense of vision is very important and without the ability to see an individual would be missing out on many colorful life experiences. Blindness, which is the lack of the ability to see is a very dark and challenging disability. Without one’s eyes, everyday activities such a walking, reading, eating and identifying people can be a struggle. It has been proven that the brain will adapt to the loss by giving itself a makeover. If one sense is lost,
Furthermore, this documentary changed several ideas in my mind about these people who cannot communicate and speak. Before I see this video, I did not think that they can communicate as normal people. I thought that they can only speak and answer easy questions. However, this documentary showed me that these individuals with AAC devices can live, work, and communicate normally. They have the chance to achieve many goals in their lives better than normal individuals. The AAC systems do not just allow them to speak and meet their basic needs. However, these AAC systems affect their educations, financial, and professions. I also realized that they have an important role in their societies as normal people. Furthermore, I believe that the professionals such as Bruce Baker, Katya Hill and Barry Romich who contributed in making the AAC systems are genius. They created something for individuals who have communication disabilities to allow them to function as normal people. They gave them the way to communicate and live the normal

While hearing impaired drivers may face challenges in hearing the sounds necessity when driving, modern technology can aid in enhancing their other abilities through the design of various modules that can be incorporated into a vehicle. These challenges are vast, including difficulty raised in communicating with officers when pulled over to the diminished awareness of the driver of his or her surrounding environment, not being able to hear what is going on, increasing their chance of accidents. The module I suppose is a removable vibrating steering wheel that will enhance the touch sense of humans, tactioception, in place of hearing.
One of the first actions needed in constructing a garden for the blind on the south lawn of Hume Hall is to construct a barrier on the northern end and eastern end surrounding the garden so as to block out any unwanted street noise. The wall would preferably be cement, with the sides facing Museum Road and North-South Drive unpainted so as to absorb as much sound as possible. However, the sides facing the garden should be painted so as to reflect the sounds of the garden back to its occupants. This wall may need to be as high as seven feet or larger, however high it needs to be in order to block as much external noise as possible.

By using eye-tracking data, it was used to figure out whether the warning that the CAT device gave was correct or not. The warning was judged to be correct whenever the driver took actions by either slowing down by braking or steering the wheel. For example, if the CAT device gave a Forward Collision Warning and the driver took action by slowing down, then it was judged to be a correct warning. However, if there was no vehicle in front and the driver chose to ignore it, then it was judged to be a false warning. Figure 3.5 shows that the CAT device, RD-140 gave a Forward Collision Warning. The eye-tracking data revealed that there was a vehicle in front and the participant took action by slowing down in the next few seconds. Therefore, this was calculated as a correct
Bogie is a good kid who has to deal with people who pick on him and keep asking what it’s like to be blind, but he meets one person that changes everything and they help each other out along the way and try to forget about him being blind.”Blind people can do anything sighted people can do.Except drive,I guess.” he is telling the other character that he can do almost anything that sighted people can do.”Are
This project will discuss the need for quality healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities. People with intellectual disabilities are not experiencing the quality health care that that are worthy of from health care professionals when they are hospitalized (reference). Those living with intellectual disabilities are a significant part of the American population. Individuals with intellectual disabilities often times struggle with complications such as, asthma, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin allergies, migraines, headaches, and consequently seek help from healthcare professionals on a regular basis and often experience discrepancies in the care they receive (reference). The reason for the lack of quality health care for those who
As stated in the book, when you first begin to drive you may pay close attention to everything yet, when driving the same route it is more likely that you unconsciously know what you are already expecting, what you are going to see, which in turn can make you feel more at ease because you are familiar with the object or experience.
All universities have liberal art requirements. The propose disability studies is an in-depth look at the history, culture, and social standing of people with disabilities. “Disability Studies: Expanding the Parameters of Diversity” encourages people to view people with disabilities as a group that should be represented when studying liberal arts and other cultures. According to“Disability Studies: Expanding the Parameters of Diversity”, “The social, political, and cultural analyses embodied in disability studies form a prism through which one can gain a broader understanding of society and human experience, and the significance of human variation” (Linton et al. 8). People that have disabilities exist on this world,
Disability: Any person who has a mental or physical deterioration that initially limits one or more major everyday life activities. Millions of people all over the world, are faced with discrimination, the con of being unprotected by the law, and are not able to participate in the human rights everyone is meant to have. For hundreds of years, humans with disabilities are constantly referred to as different, retarded, or weird. They have been stripped of their basic human rights; born free and are equal in dignity and rights, have the right to life, shall not be a victim of torture or cruelty, right to own property, free in opinion and expression, freedom of taking part in government, right in general education, and right of employment opportunities. I realize that blind people are important for us to not make fun of them or hurting their feeling that being blind is hardest for them. For me, if i have a blind person in my family or friend I got to cheer them up that being blind is not bad as being normal because some blind person can be talented and successful in their life. I tell them that I study psychology in school and there was one day that the teacher makes me being blind and I realize that being blind is not bad as they think but makes me experience how I do the normal activity is harder than when you have an eyes. It makes me understand the feeling of having no vision on everything is not the worst thing on your life.
Computers are now being used to help the blind with a voice synthesizer that tells them what they are typing or what they are trying to see on the screen. According to Palmer (1999),"CCS builds and sells complete handicapped accessible packages, as well as individual products like speech synthesizes voice cards and screen enlargement software. The screen enlargement programs increase type size to aid people who are partially impaired. Those with total blindness use synthesizers both hardware and software versions that read what's on the screen. They work by translating ASCI symbols, the series of code each letter and graphic is assigned into voice transmissions.
