Black University Student Experience Interview

Introduction
In this study, a freshmen black student in transition of obtaining a degree at Historical Black Colleges University in the South was interview in order to learn more about her lived-experiences during her academic sojourn at that college. The student gives a compendious response to a contentious issue on racism and diversity. From the aforementioned, the author was able to collect useful information based on the student experience interview in this study. The interview was organize in three section: the historical background, experience and the meaning.

The respondent recount her childhood as growing up in Chicago, which she considers as being rough due to a lot of gang activity plaguing her environment. …show more content…

She asserts the white displayed a lot of racism and discrimination towards her being a black person living in a white neighborhood. She encountered the use of derogatory word from white during her middle school year. She was aghast as a young woman hearing such demeaning and degrading word from opposite race. She noted they look at her as less of a human and they assume they are superior. She upholds a strong believe that as a black African-American woman, she is in a quest to know who she is. This makes her the second person who will be attending college. Following her aunty footsteps will enable her to set an example for her two brother. This will inform them that if she can do it they can also do it. Aside from her aunty who leads by example, another reason that fuel her decision is to prevent unwanted pregnancy, which could hinder her from achieving her dream of going to college. She avoid getting pregnant because she does not want to be working from nine to five making minimum wage in order to fend for herself. She wants to be successful and be an example for her family. Her experience as being a student means it can be stressful and frustrating, and being a student is being independent, you are no longer in high school no more, you are no longer under your parent tutelage and it means growing up, being mature and understanding your purpose in life. It might be lonely sometime but it is better to understand oneself.
As a student, she always reminisce about her growing up in Chicago, an urban neighborhood where people live in abject poverty and in Louisiana a middle class neighborhood where people live in big houses and serene environment. She intended to give back to her community. After earning her degree in Business administration, she intends to invest in her aunty learning center in Chicago where kids can do their homework and engage in extra curriculum
