In order to encompass and fully grasp the meaning and structure of a song, one must be able to analyze the song through different spectrums. For instance, every song is produced differently in order to send out a specific message or stand for a certain issue. At times, when music is produced, it embodies a significant attitude towards its audience in which they are able to sense the quality and atmosphere of the song. This essay will be analyzing the musical, textual, and visual evidence of “Sur ma route” by Black M who is known as one of the top current “rappers” in French popular music. However, it is essentially to keep in mind that timbre “instantly signals genre and affect” (Wexler, 60). The tone quality of the beats produced in the song is up beat, while keeping a constant pattern. However, this is quite different when it comes down Black M’s rapping. He alters his voice when he isolates other sounds to create a moment an atmosphere solely on his rapping. The artist most likely wanted to focus on that segment because that was the core and foundation of the track. At the end of his first verse, his tone of voice is rough and intense. The artist decides to mislead his audience by portraying an aggressive side, displaying himself as a rapper full of charisma and strength. During the rest of the song, his voice sounds as if he were pleading but with a sense of open hospitality. Unlike the produced beats, the guitar(s) that were featured in the background of the song falls under the category of the physical property of sounds. This is because the sound that is produced from the guitar is correlated with the “frequency content, relations of loudness among overtones, and envelope configuration” (Wexler, 62).
