Biotechnology is defined as the intent on solving our environment while extracting cures for disease and mastering our destiny in an attempt to improve the human condition. In hopes of discovering everything there is to know in regards to ourselves and the planet we occupy. Applying tools of modern biology whether it’s molecular biology, chemistry, genomics, or genetics, we understand the biological phenomenon on a new level. By 2005, the one billionth biotech acre was planted. This is a remarkable milestone in biotechnology which will assist in propelling our findings into the future of this science that continues to evolve and Earth as the only place we know of, with true life.
Many of biotechnologies successes are built on a foundation of lessons learned from mistakes (Hodgson, 2006). The places we are reaching now were impossible only a generation ago. Every industry has its faults and biotechnology is no exception. “From the appointment of the wrong executives to the misworded legal document, most biotech companies are replete with everyday errors, the kind of mistakes that could happen to anyone and which are readily and rapidly correctable, almost before anyone finds out” (Hodgson, 2006). However, still biotech leaders are just as extremely optimistic as they have been throughout history. These dreams begin with inspiration and flourish with determination and courage.
Throughout the history of biotechnology there have been so many wonderful achievements. Biomedical research has allowed child care and preschool programs along with numerous other workplaces and academic institutions to be much more knowledgeable about identifying their preferred emergency response system (Department of Health, 2006b). This preparedness is not just for bioterrorism attacks, but can promote a healthier atmosphere with less absenteeism in general. On a daily basis a vast majority of Americans come into contact with countless people who may or may not be ill. Diseases are easily passed from person-to-person around the world very rapidly. Many of the offered resources and information from the Department of Health and its available publications “can also help in other types of emergencies” like natural disasters, for example. (Department of Health, 2006b).
In the late twentieth century, the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering has positioned itself to become one of the great technological revolutions of human history. Yet, things changed when Herber Boyer, a biochemist at the University of California, founded the company Genentech in 1976 to exploit the commercial potential of his research. Since then the field has exploded into a global amalgam of private research firms developing frivolous, profit-hungry products, such as square trees tailor-made for lumber, without any sort of government regulation.

Many people feel that biology has become more advanced than physics. Biology has in fact become the new focus of the future as we tend to use it a lot in our daily lives. The study of Biotechnology is known as the branch of molecular biology that studies the use of microorganisms to perform specific industrial processes. This study shows that our lives can be transformed.
Stem cells help us to maintain and heal our bodies, as they are undifferentiated cells, their roles are not yet determined. They have the ability to become anything during early life and growth. Stem cells come from two sources, namely: embryonic stem cells (embryo’s formed during the blastocyst phase of embryological development) and adult stem cells (see figure 3).
The ubiquitous and incalculable benefits of biotechnology as a whole and the specific issues involved in Gattaca successfully mute the alarmist calls for moratoriums and bans on these technological breakthroughs. With utmost caution and consideration these studies will ultimately lead humanity to limitless heights.

The study of replication, transcription and translation of genetic material is known as molecular biology. Molecular biology is a bottom-up approach to understanding human life. Though the exploration of molecular biology began in the 1930s, it really took off in the 1960s after the uncovering of the structure of DNA. (Coriell Institute for Medical Research, n.d.) Today, molecular biology is shaping our understanding of diseases. Through this reflection journal, I seek to explore preventative and curative phenomena in medical biotechnology, and determine their impact on the political, social and economic spheres.
Reading up information and searching for clues (which were not extremely easy), turns out to have broadened my knowledge on Nature and Biomimicry itself and that there are so many people already using wind turbines to harvest the winds energy and know how the world can be saved. Therefore I have come to the conclusion and have seen that my hypothesis has been proven right.

Synthetic biology, also known as synbio, is a new form of research that began in the year 2000. The Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration (ETC Group) says that synthetic biology is bringing together “engineering and the life sciences in order to design and construct new biological parts, devices and systems that do not currently exist in the natural world’ (Synthetic Biology). Synthetic biology is aiming to create safer medicines, clean energy, and help the environment through synthetically engineered medicines, biofuels, and food. Because synthetic biology has only existed for fourteen years, there is controversy involving its engineering ethics. In this literature review, I am going to summarize and correlate the International Association for Synthetic Biology (IASB) Code of Conduct for Gene Synthesis, the impact of synthetic biology on people and the environment, and the philosophical debates.
For the biotechnology industry, the future is now. Biotech companies are producing new and improved drugs, mapping the genome, and creating artificial organs and body parts. The advent of these new products will increase the quality of life for those who have access to them. Advancements in the biotechnology field have received a lot attention by the press and publications. They have given the impression that it is almost imperative to learn about this fairly new field of study.
