The Biopsychosocial approach was created Dr George Engel and Dr John Romano in Rochester. The approach applies the biological, psychological and social factors to understanding mental health. These factors exist along each other.
The Biological Model is basically a physical cause for the mental health disorder. The model is concerned with factors such as disease, genetics and physiology. There are four key areas which are physical causes. These are micro-organisms, neuro-anatomy and genetics bio-chemistry. It isn 't practical to assume that every mental illness is the cause of a physical injury or society. If this is assumption is taken for every mental illness then treatment could become confused and this may have consequences. Some can be explained by the model but is wrong assume the model can be applied to every illness. “Some critics feel that incorrect behavior (such as anti-social behavior, for instance) cannot be treated as a medical condition, as very rarely do biological factors have a role in inducing it” (Varnekar, 2016). They believe that by assuming that this behaviour is an illness effects the credibility of psychiatry because it doesn 't seem rational to place illnesses such as schizophrenia in the same barrier as anti-social behaviour. The effects on an individuals society includes their religious beliefs, relationships, work, past incidents etc. To try and take into account all these social aspects in impractical. Its very difficult to decide which social factors should be considered alongside the biological and psychological factors. These are often complex and involve a range of different factors. Difficulty in relationships, as in the Social Model, is a common reason. Repeated conflict and difficult family systems often lead to mental illness. Events that effect a young persons independence, identity and autonomy can have an impact on a young person. “Fleming et al(2007) found that knowing someone who has attempted suicide. Having symptoms of depression, alcohol misuse, and lesbian, gay and transgender relationships were associated with an increased risk of suicide.” (Claveirole and Gaughan, 2011). A young person is often more vulnerable to suicide if they suffer from depression, low self-esteem, and hopelessness. Often those who abuse substances; are aggressive; have risky sexual behaviour; and suffer from health problems have a higher rate in mental illness. Having a relative with a mental illness creates a risk for a person to develop mental health problems. Stressful situations can lead to illness, for example, financial problems, a loved ones death or divorce. Brain injuries and abuse as a child are also risk factors. Michael is a 56 year old male who lives alone in a small tin shed in the middle of the bush in central Queensland. He has no children, no partner and lives by himself. During the day he spends his time sleeping on the couch or doing chores around the property. If he isn’t asleep, he requires a stimuli to remain occupied. When he was a young boy, he was a very calm child with a great sense of humour. His physical health was perfect with good energy levels. When he was sexually abused at the age of 8, by his grandfather, these characteristics started to change. From the age of 16 he was having regular breakdowns in his thinking and emotional responses. First of all, this case is associated with biopsychosocial approach which recognizes that, it is the approach that considers human behavior to be the result of interactions of integrated biological, psychological, and social systems. This approach helps us to recognize the ways in which women’s biology, psychology, and their social world intertwine within each other affect their reactions to alcohol and alcohol interventions. In order to explain some of the concepts and theories, we must first sort through the facts that have been presented in the case study. On June 8, 2016, a child welfare agency conducted a parent/child observation with Ms. Sophia Mendez and her three children. Ashley M. Mosgrove, social work intern, did the intake and completed the biopsychosocial assessment.
The biopsychosocial model of health was developed by George L. Engel (1977) whom determined the cause of diseases. Biopsychosocial has a deep interrelation with all three of the models or the factors which leads to the overall outcome of a person’s illness or disease. Mrs. Nancy Hamilton (changed name for privacy) is 95 years old female who resides in a local continued care retirement community (CCRC) located in the Los Angeles County. I decided to interview Mrs. Hamilton for her successful aging. I have known her for 9 years and her aging process has not been an easy ride but she always maintained a positive sprit that kept her going even today. Mrs. Hamilton moved in to a CCRC in 2006, two years after her husband passed away. Mrs. Hamilton has one daughter and one son. Daughter Margaret lives nearby and visits frequently and takes care of personally needs such as transportation to medical appointments or shopping for skin care products or clothes as necessary. Son, David lives in the Northern California and visits a few times a year.
First of all, through this assignment, I have learned that a theory is an interrelated set of concepts and propositions, organized into deductive systems that explain relationships among different aspects. It is an overall explanation of the person in environment configuration, and helps explain why a problem is occurring. It will also provide a social worker with a set of ideas that will help the social worker get a better understanding of the problem. It is generally accepted within healthcare that to understand mental health we must adopt the biopsychosocial model. This model assumes that an interdependent relationship exists between biological, psychological and social factors which are involved in all aspects of mental health (Toates, 2010, p. 14). To be true to the model research must be holistic and not investigate the factors in isolation.
