This essay will focus completely on Mental illness in the UK. To gather my research I used various resources such as websites and books. I have also viewed YouTube videos in order to expand my knowledge. The statistics gathered may not be totally accurate in discussing mental health within the UK for the sources are secondary but it is reliable for giving a view of what the distribution is like amongst gender, age, class as well as ethnicity. When looking at the British society, mental health disorders are actually extremely common. When viewing the National Statistics, it stated that about one in six adults will have a mental health problem. Leading to an additional study, stating that around 30 individuals out of every 100 will experience mental health problems and this is on a yearly basis. While looking at the National Statistic it was shown that depression and anxiety is the most common form of mental distress between the years 1993 and 2000. While anxiety and depression is most common, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive has remained the least common, for in the year 1993 OCD had a figure of 1.7% of the adult population which later on in 2000 decreases by 0.5%. Likewise panic disorder, which reduced from 1% in 1993 to 0.7% in 2000. In addition, statistics show that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem during each year. Also that around 10% of children in Britain suffer from a mental health disorder. It is also evidential that depression affects 1 in 5 older people, as for prisons in Britain, only 1 in 10 prisoners have no mental health problem. When looking at various mental health disorders, postnatal depression affects between 0.1% and 0.2% of new mothers within Britain. People with a psychosis have difficulty dealing with day to day. Living in poverty or an abusive environment places serious strain on an individual’s mental health (Association, 2001). There is thought to be three causes to mental illness (Association, 2001). The first is genetic and some researchers suggest the mental illness is inherited (Association, 2001). Psychological is the second and this is when the individual expresses low self esteem which can lead to depression. The third is socio-cultural, or stressor of life. This is when the family structure or ways of communication could induce abnormal behaviour (Association, 2001).
The study said mental health problems were “widespread, at times disabling, yet often hidden.” This is due to the under-funding for these types of health services in the United Kingdom. "Mental health services have been underfunded for decades and too many people have received no help at all, leading to hundreds of thousands of lives put on hold or ruined," wrote task force chairman Paul Farmer, the chief executive of mental health charity Mind. This study also showed that only one in four adults receives a diagnosis of their mental illness in any given year. Mental health represents “the largest single cause of disability in the UK.” Sad to say in this system, “most children and younger ones actually receive no support at all, and even those that do, the average wait for an appointment was 32 weeks” in the year of
In the United States alone, 57.7 million individuals suffer from mental illness. These illnesses range anywhere from mood disorders to anxiety disorders or to personality disorders and so on (The Numbers Count: Mental Disorders in America). 18 to 25 year olds make up about 30% of these individuals alone (Survey Finds Many Living with Mental Illness Go Without Treatment). These individuals require care from medication to psychiatry or even to confinement. However, of these 57.7 million individuals with mental illness, studies have found that less than one in three of these individuals receive proper treatment (Studies Say Mental Illness Too Often Goes Untreated).
Mental illness is more common than one would like to believe. In reality, one in five Americans will suffer from a mental disorder in any given year. Though that ratio is about equivalent to more than fifty-four million people, mental illness still remains a shameful and stigmatized topic (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). The taboo of mental illness has an extensive and exhausting history, dating back to the beginning of American colonization. It has not been an easy road, to say the least.
Conduct is taught at a young age when a parent wants the child to live up to certain standards; however, not everyone follows to their parents’ expectations. As people grow older, different phases begin to show; either the phase changes the personality or the person gets over this stage and lives on with life. Every person is different and behavior patterns affect certain age groups more than others. Mental illness drags kids and adults into discovering the negativity in life and medication to act appropriately with those around them. Zero self-control with medication will lead to consequences depending on the person’s thought process. Modern authors describe those with mental illness and challenges to an impossible recovery and the viewpoint of those without mental conditions.
The discussion of mental health is slowly being brought to the social surface to create a more inclusive society for those dealing with a mental illness. However, those with a mental illness are continuously being affected by stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination by those who simply don’t comprehend the complexity of the human brain (Glaser, G.2017). As more people become mental health activist, they are exposing the plethora of issues surrounding the overall mental and physical stability of those who are negatively affected by the social construct of what it means to be normal.

Many of these people overcome their illness to some extent and manage to play an important role in society. Work Cited: Claire Henderson, Sara Evans-Lacko, Clare Flach, Graham, Thornicrofi.
The media heavily glamorizes mental illnesses and tries too hard make them seem beautiful. Conditions such as depression, addiction, and bipolar disorder are trends instead of serious conditions that require professional help. More and more works about damaged protagonists being saved by someone who makes them feel special or beautiful are being released. In the first season of American Horror Story, Violet Harmon suffers from depression. Tate Langdon, one of her father’s patients, takes an interest in her immediately. There relationship spirals out of control when it is discovered that Tate is actually a ghost and that he raped Violet’s mom in order to acquire a child for his own dead mother. It is also discovered that Tate is responsible for a school shooting that he did out of anger after his mother aborted his younger brother. Although they both have serious problems that they need to deal with, they end up continuing their relationship . Violet, after discovering that she simply cannot deal with the fact that Tate is psychotic and that her feelings for him are wildly out of control, kills herself. This relationship was completely toxic for both parties, but unfortunately they both believed that love would find its way. It takes the idea that something as simple as “true love” between two teenagers can solve all of their serious internal issues. The news also does a terrible job of painting a picture of mental illnesses. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry, people correlate mental health and mass shootings negatively in order to get more support for gun control policies. By correlating violent acts such as the Aurora shooting and the Sandy Hook Shooting with people that are mentally ill, they paint an image that me...
Imagine society blamed people for being diagnosed with illnesses such as cancer? Claiming that it was their choices in life that led to such an awful disease. To make them feel guilty of a situation that was in no way deserved by them. This happens all the time to victims of mental illness, but with the added burden of shame. Considering the shocking statistic that one in four will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year in the UK , why is it that we hardly hear of people suffering from mental illness? Why is it a cloud of judgment and misunderstanding still surrounds the subject? People with a mental disorder or with a history of mental health issues are continually ostracized by society. This results in it being more difficult than it already is for the mentally ill to admit their symptoms to others and to seek treatment. To towards understanding mental illness is to finally lift the stigma, and to finally let sufferers feel safe and accepted within today’s society.
Thesis: With there being over 200 documented mental illnesses (Mental Illness and the Family), I cannot talk about all of them so I am only going to be discussing the three most common ones.
According to NIMH “ 44.7 million adults aged 18 or older represents 18 percent of adults are affected by mental illness in the united states.” Recently, Americans have seen a increasement in gun violence like the parkland shooting. President trump tweeted “ the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed.” By looking at the recent shootings there has been increase discussion to improve mental health resources.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
Globalisation has challenges the issue in mental health population. There are several factors associated with globalisation that have mental health consequences (Bhavsar and Bhurga, 2008). Globalization could be defined as a process in which the traditional boundaries of culture are changing and societies are gradually and increasingly diminish (Okasha, 2005; Bhurga and Mastrogianni, 2004). Whereas mental health could simply mean the level of psychological well-being and the absence of mental illness. The prevalence of mental illness is closely related to social, economic and cultural conditions (Okasha, 2005). This process is changing the nature of human interaction in many spheres such economic, political, social, cultural, environmental
