First and foremost, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the organization seeking to employ a Biologist. The CDC is a national level organization leading the way in development of medical advancements and disease prevention in the United States. Finding individuals to bring their expertise and work ethic to the research environment is paramount in preventing and controlling the spread of catastrophic events such as the small pox or other deadly illnesses. The organization realizes the importance of being prepared for outbreaks anywhere in the world by working with partners to have vaccines and preventative health measures in place. While the CDC is based in the USA the advances made in the laboratory and field will translate to global improvement in health and well-being. Learning how to successfully complete laboratory experiments that were progressive in nature taught me how to read and compile data, represent my findings on paper and how working with a team is important in having efficiency in the laboratory. Learning to understand data from biology experiments carried over to other classes such as mathematics and health and exercise science (HES) classes. In conclusion, first hand investigations are important in finding answers of many questions that biologists have. They provide the investigator with a better understanding of a particular issue as opposed to interpreting data from secondary sources. In biology, first hand investigations are used to calculate abundance and distribution of animals in an ecosystem. Although methods to calculate abundance and distribution can be useful to investigators some have a negative impact on the environment and so ethical behaviour should be considered before scientists interfere with the lives of organisms.
- In a normal blood sample, there should be a range of hemoglobin, RBC, MCV, WBC, and platelets. Hemoglobin’s function is to carry oxygen from the respiratory organs to the rest of the body. RBC’s function is to remove carbon dioxide from the body. MCV’s just refer to the average volume of red blood cells, which remove carbon dioxide. WBCs are extremely important for the body. They protect the body from infections, diseases, and foreign invaders. Platelets are also important to the body and their function is to prevent bleeding.

The rapid pace of vaccine development convinces people that they are safe from the infectious diseases. Unfortunately, the anthrax outbreak in 2001, having killed five people, reveals the vulnerability of the public health, suggesting that further research on contagious epidemics should be developed abruptly. In response to this issue, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) granted Boston University a $128 million funding for the construction of a new leading facility known as the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL or BU Biolab), which would be sited on the Boston University Medical Campus, to battle against contagious ailments. Besides conducting research on infectious diseases, the BU Biolab will also perform research to prepare for bioterrorism (Le Duc). According to the Center for Disease Control, there are four levels of increasing of containment for research on infections ranging from Biosafety Levels 1 through 4 (BSL-1 to BSL-4). While much of the research on epidemics is done in laboratories with BSL-2 to BSL-3, the BU Biolab, with the highest level of precaution, BSL-4, will conduct research on rare contagious epidemics including anthrax, ebola, and plague, which are usually life threatening.
If you were told to believe a side of an argument that did not have majority of evidence points on its side, would you? The theories of evolution, creation and intelligent design have been a debated controversy for years and years. These three theories have three different ideas. The theory that creationists have is to believe that concept and design require a Creator. Creationists usually tend to believe that each organism is created as a single and distinct organism. Evolutionists tend to believe that all life started from single celled organisms. They believe that these single celled organisms are part of a continuing evolution over a very long period of time and that this evolution results in the development of new varieties and different species. People who believe in intelligent design believe in the theory that the universe cannot have arisen by chance and was designed and created by some intelligent entity. Evolution is the theory that is most probable because of the fossil record, similarities in all organisms and genetic changes in a population over time.
Have you ever visited a zoo and wondered what it takes to be one of those people who take care of the animals; or even wanted to play with, or train the Dolphins? Zoologists are more than just people who work with animals. If it was not for Zoologists and Marine biologists, we would have no clue about animals and their behaviors. They study how animals are in their natural habitats, how they reproduce, the kinds of food they eat and much more. Animals adapt to their homeland and when you take them out of that area it is very useful to know how they behave, so you can mock their environment especially when put into a zoo. Many people overlook the importance of biologists, not knowing what they really do.
Over the years, I have developed an innovative approach to teaching and conducting research with undergraduates through creating and presenting course materials in both laboratory and classroom settings. In my experience, the best teaching involves concrete, hands-on examples, so I engage students in my courses by encouraging the maximum laboratory participation possible.
Reading up information and searching for clues (which were not extremely easy), turns out to have broadened my knowledge on Nature and Biomimicry itself and that there are so many people already using wind turbines to harvest the winds energy and know how the world can be saved. The study of life is an idea that always manages to spark my curiosity, and it drives me into the enthusiastic research of the latest advancements into the field of science. Since my early years I found myself collecting plant leaves and looking at them through a microscope, and being baffled yet admiring of what I saw through the lens. Throughout my High School experience, I read articles ranging from creating 3D - printed limbs, organs, and tissue for people, to creating an anti-lymphoma vaccine that was made with tobacco leaves carrying RNA from cancerous B-cells. Animal experimentation is contentious issue in today’s society that, whether it continue or should stop. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. Monkeys’ similarities allow the scientists to test effectiveness of the new discovered drugs, food additives, and chemical and even cosmetics products. Although, such medical experimentations had helped scientists to produce vaccines, and medicines that are necessary for elimination of some deceases, but the test had negative medical effect on monkeys.
Personal Statement The first time I looked into a microscope, I knew I was addicted. I was six years old, my elementary school was closed due to the weather, and I had nowhere to go. My mother had no choice but to take me into her lab with her, and in order to keep me from being bored, she let me look into a microscope, under which I saw hundreds of bacteria. To me, a whole new world of living organisms, living within the world I already knew, was uncovered.
While still in high school, before I even decided on which university I wanted to attend, I knew I wanted to study abroad and explore another country’s rich history and culture. Currently, I have never been outside of the United States, and while I love my country, I have always aspired to travel outside of it and pursue my passion for traveling. Being able to study my major of biology in another country with an exciting and different ecosystem would be an opportunity of a lifetime for me, and it would allow me to explore and appreciate the study of life in a contrasting and diverse ecosystem from what I am used to. Costa Rica would enable me to pursue my passion for biology in a unique environment where I can study tropical biology or conservation marine biology up close on a personal level.
The myriad mysteries of science can be unraveled by the emerging technologies including Biotechnology. Science has always been my interest and forte thus, the choice of Biotechnology as my academic option was the ideal decision. I had prepared for the highly competitive entrance exam AIET to get admission into the integrated Masters Degree in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Dr. D.Y. Patil University and secured 87th all over India rank and was proud to gain admission to this venerated university. The academic curriculum has introduced me to amazing subjects like ‘Microbiology’, ‘Molecular Biology’, ‘Biochemistry’, ‘Genetics’ and ‘Industrial Biotechnology’. Although many seminal biological events have been explained in theory during the past century, the technology to harness their potential for benefiting humankind has only been possible during the past few decades. The laboratory experience gives you the opportunity of seeing, touching, smelling, and hearing (but not tasting!) the structures and materials you learn about in class. What you do in the lab helps you correlate the text and lecture with study of real organisms. You will also gain practical experience in dissections and use of the microscope so you can see structures and relationships with your own eyes. In addition you will perform scientific experiments to help you gain an appreciation of the scientific method.
