INTRODUCTION TO LAB The laboratory experience gives you the opportunity of seeing, touching, smelling, and hearing (but not tasting!) the structures and materials you learn about in class. What you do in the lab helps you correlate the text and lecture with study of real organisms. You will also gain practical experience in dissections and use of the microscope so you can see structures and relationships with your own eyes. In addition you will perform scientific experiments to help you gain an appreciation of the scientific method. Good lab work involves patient, accurate, and critical observations. It demands an orderly and systematic classification of facts, repetition of technical procedures, and frequent checking of observations and results. Conscientious effort on your part in the performance of lab work is necessary if it is to be a worthwhile part of this biology course. In order to take full advantage of this experience you must be an active, involved, informed participant in the process. The quicker you become oriented to the laboratory setting and what is expected of you, the more you will benefit from the experience as a whole. It only works if you want it to. In order to maintain the appropriate focus and concentration on the lab work, your professor will enforce his/her policy regarding the use of cell …show more content…
Be discriminating. Don’t just look once and expect to be able to identify it 3 weeks from now. Study it, draw it, describe what it’s doing...that’s how you learn. Your drawings need to be accurate, original, and reflect what you see and what you know. The drawings make up a large part of your “notes”. You will need them to study for lab practicals. You will not be able to remember, without good drawings, what you have seen and done. Drawings and diagrams in the text and lab handouts will help identify structures, but are no substitute for your own
Last semester in my Biology Lab, I was given the assignment of writing a lab report as my final for the class. The prompt that I was given said to, “Write a lab report based on the results of the cellular respiration experiment”. This required that I conduct an experiment comparing the cellular respiration rates of germinating peas and non-germinating peas, and I was to record my findings in the form of a lab report. Everything was provided for by the instructor, including all materials needed to conduct the experiment. Along with the writing prompt, my instructor gave us a sample lab report and a detailed outline. After being given all of the paperwork, it was clear what my instructor expected me to do in order complete this assignment, and what his views were towards writing.
My breaching experiment involved three social norms. These social norms forced people to be in an uncomfortable situation and make a decision as to how they should react to it. The first social norm I experimented with was sitting next to someone in an uncrowded movie theater. I chose this because of the awkwardness it caused. At all three of my trials, occurring from 1-9 pm, there were over fifty empty seats at Carmike on February 21st. The next social norm I analyzed was sitting in someone’s assigned seat. This was chosen because I felt it would be engrossing to observe the different reactions fellow high school students retaliated with, all being different races. At Liberty High School I took someone’s assigned seat five different times,
Lab reports are the biggest part of our writing component in Chemistry and Physics. These are complete for each lab and activity.
Current animal testing has been a contentious subject ever since it started off 150 years back. Although a lot of people discover animal testing inhumane and egoistic, it is a important factor to boost our understanding of medication and to improve our understanding of science. Animal testing, to some, is the way to ameliorating our level of living and preserving many lives, and therefore has many benefits. On the other hand, the negatives may not be passed, and scientists are constantly trying to decrease the damages with some methods they create in the process. Even so, to the dismay of numerous animal lovers in addition to those who are endeavoring for animal rights, animal testing will not be stopped every time soon because, for now, it is the most trustworthy form of testing that includes the safety of daily products we use more carefully than any other procedure.
My first negative experience with animals in the lab was in a college human physiology course. We learned about the differences between the decentralized amphibian nervous system and the centralized mammalian system by sacrificing your basic frog. The procedure included decapitating the frog with a pair of scissors. No, there was no anestitia involved. The frogs went from alive to headless in one snap of the decapatron 2000. As if this were a joke, we were to demonstrate the frog's loss of equilibrium and inability to swim because...
To help understand the experiments preformed, lets decipher what each of these cells do. IDENTIFY EACH OF THE FACTORS AND WHAT IS THERE FUNCTION. NEXT TALK ABOUT THE EXPERIMENTS PREFORMED AND WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF EACH OF THEM
A science kit is basically a toy or collection of toys for kids, but scientific! What do we mean by that? Well, as opposed to a doll or toy car, for example, a science kit is a science project or group of projects consisting of hands-on experiments that often result in a fun science toy. Science kits, such as the ones sold by Science Store for the Stars, are presented in an easy-to-understand and interesting way and are intended to teach kids facts about various science subjects. For example, Crystal Radio kits are very popular and consist of one project; build a crystal radio. While they work on this project, kids learn about electronics and electricity, and how radios function.
They test many types of samples in the lab such as skin or body fluids like blood and urine. Lab techs have the responsibility to not only perform the test but to record the results and get the results where they need to be. Blood tests can indicate many different conditions such as a hormone imbalance or blood type. This is very important because if someone receives a blood type that is not compatible with their own blood, the patient could die. Skin and tissue samples can also lead to a diagnosis. They can run tests to see if a sample reacts to something or doesn’t react to something. This is how the lab tech helps to diagnose.

Every year thousands of animals are euthanized due to animal testing such as cosmetic testing, medical testing, and dissection. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) (Types of Animal Testing) Some of the things we use every day such as; make up, soap, furniture polish, and varieties of cleaning supplies, are tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. (Animal Testing) Cosmetic testing is used to test a product and its ingredients, medical testing finds cures for different illnesses; and dissection is used to help high school students in science classes have a better understanding of the class or students undergoing the medical field in college. (Animal Experimentation) Animal testing is not required by law; it is only used to protect companies from consumer lawsuits, provided new research for diseases, and provide a visual learning experiment for students. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) It has been proven that there are more reliable and less expensive alternatives to animal testing, such as; computer models and cell and tissue tests. Animal experimentation should be eliminated because it is an inhumane method for testing purposes.
Microscopy allows one to view samples and objects that cannot be seen with the human eye. With all the modern techniques used in the biology field today, microscopy is one of the most important one that allows us to see a world beyond what our eyes limits us too. The majority of both organisms that are helpful and harmful are too small to be seen with the human eye, and without the microscope we would have not understood the mechanism behind the major diseases we know today. Microscopy has helped scientists produce antibiotics and antiviral drugs to treat the diseases that once were in a world beyond our vision. There are three types of microscopy mainly used: optical (light), electron, and scanning probe microscopy.
Animal experimentation is contentious issue in today’s society that, whether it continue or should stop. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. Monkeys’ similarities allow the scientists to test effectiveness of the new discovered drugs, food additives, and chemical and even cosmetics products. Although, such medical experimentations had helped scientists to produce vaccines, and medicines that are necessary for elimination of some deceases, but the test had negative medical effect on monkeys.
For centuries, animals have been known as man’s companions, a form of therapeutic relief, and a source for human joy and entertainment. However, animals are being tortured and treated cruelly for the sake of human prosperity all over the country. Animal testing as a means of researching medical advancements and product quality for consumers is a large problem in today’s society. The research experiments executed with animals in the name of scientific discovery call into question the compassion and integrity of the human spirit. If we do not put an end to animal testing in the United States, many animals will suffer in anguish through the torment inflicted upon them in a product testing lab. Product testing on animals should be illegal, because animals are killed or kept in captivity their entire life, substances that are tested on animals may never be released for human use, and there are alternatives available to testing on animals.
...ory they will gain skill and know how to use each of lab equipment in according to certain situation. Besides, virtual chemical laboratory can be correct alternative to real laboratory in order to guarantee of user, insufficient chemical tools and poor real laboratory condition may be in danger.
The use of animals in medical research began in the early years of physicians such as Aristotle (384-322 BC), Erasistratus (304-258 BC) and Galen (129-199/217 AD). These physicians performed experiments on animals to understand things such as anatomy and physiology. An experimental method for testing surgical procedures was introduced by Ibn Zuhr, an Arab physician; surgical procedures were carried out on animals before it was applied to human patients.
