The title of the piece I chose was “Big Thoughts” by Luke Gorder. This piece was on two large canvases, one half was vertical and the other half was horizontal. The vertical canvas had a young girl in a tutu looking off in the distance. She was standing in her bedroom. She looked innocent and fragile. The second painting was the other half of her room. The bed was against the wall and was neatly made, but on top of the bed was a jaguar that looked like it was going to pounce at any minute. Looking at it at first I was amazed by the choice of colors. The artist used a variety of grays, whites, and blacks it gave the painting an eerie appearance. I learned that much of his inspiration came from collages that he had collected over time from magazines, books, and family photos. From this I gained a better understanding of what the artist wanted me to capture from his work. I really enjoyed how he had used a young girl instead of an adult. If he had used someone older I would not have been as interested in the painting. I was lost in the painting because growing up I always wanted to be a ballerina wore a pink tutu all the time. I could relate to the girl in the painting because of my past experiences and memories. Also, the jaguar was very interesting to me and made a great contrast to the innocence in the painting, giving it a darker feeling. How the jaguar is painted into the painting is interesting. I like how the artist painted it like it was waiting to pounce on his next meal. Made me fear that it might attack her because she is so distracted. If he had painted the jaguar laying on the bed licking its paw it would have changed the whole feeling of the painting and to me I would have comprehended the meaning
