Abstract
The chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters I chose to research on was the one located closest to me in Orange County. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit organization which brings together underprivileged youth with mentors who are all volunteers, in order to help youth recognize their potential and build productive futures through mentoring and youth development programs. At the end of March the organization opened their new facility in Santa Ana, in order to accommodate a large increase in the number of youth served and better facilitate the very successful programs which continue to grow. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides that mentorship and positive influence to children in order for them to make smart decisions in their lives when they aren’t around that mentor. I have one younger brother, and growing up he used to look up to me in everything we did. I never realized it until I was older, but whatever I did my brother wanted to do the same exact thing, and fortunately I made good decisions as a kid thanks to the positive model our parents had set for us. Big Brother Big Sisters is similar in the fact that their volunteer Bigs provide support, and help shape that child in becoming the future for America. There isn’t one area which stands out more than the other, because it takes manpower, planning, and funding to make this all possible in providing support for the children at need. Revenue is raised through various events which not only generate monetary support for the agency, but increase awareness as well to bring in the much needed voluntary support found in the Bigs. It is stated that 84 percent of former Littles surveyed credit their Big for teaching them the importance of helping others. As the youth are given help, it allows them to see the importance of providing support to others as well, which often times lead them to becoming Bigs in the future. Big Brothers Big Sisters began in 1904, and has only strengthened throughout the many years they have been helping the youth. Because they have been around for more than 100 years now, there are no inherent weaknesses that I can see through the research I’ve done, instead I only predict them to become larger and help more children in the
