Abstract
The chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters I chose to research on was the one located closest to me in Orange County. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit organization which brings together underprivileged youth with mentors who are all volunteers, in order to help youth recognize their potential and build productive futures through mentoring and youth development programs. At the end of March the organization opened their new facility in Santa Ana, in order to accommodate a large increase in the number of youth served and better facilitate the very successful programs which continue to grow. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides that mentorship and positive influence to children in order for them to make smart decisions in their lives when they aren’t around that mentor. I have one younger brother, and growing up he used to look up to me in everything we did. I never realized it until I was older, but whatever I did my brother wanted to do the same exact thing, and fortunately I made good decisions as a kid thanks to the positive model our parents had set for us. Big Brother Big Sisters is similar in the fact that their volunteer Bigs provide support, and help shape that child in becoming the future for America. There isn’t one area which stands out more than the other, because it takes manpower, planning, and funding to make this all possible in providing support for the children at need. Revenue is raised through various events which not only generate monetary support for the agency, but increase awareness as well to bring in the much needed voluntary support found in the Bigs. It is stated that 84 percent of former Littles surveyed credit their Big for teaching them the importance of helping others. As the youth are given help, it allows them to see the importance of providing support to others as well, which often times lead them to becoming Bigs in the future. Big Brothers Big Sisters began in 1904, and has only strengthened throughout the many years they have been helping the youth. Because they have been around for more than 100 years now, there are no inherent weaknesses that I can see through the research I’ve done, instead I only predict them to become larger and help more children in the
The Salvation Army prides itself in continuously offering needs based programs or service to communities that fall below the poverty line. The Salvation Army has a wide array of strengths including: 1) Professional networking; a channel through which ideas, resources and services can be exchanged between Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations 2) Global notoriety; the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization, sustained primarily through government funds and public donations 3) Longevity; a demonstrated history of success. This history of longevity affords them a positive, solid reputation in participating communities (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
When pursuing a degree in social work, one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences within the degree aspect is the capstone project. The capstone is a multi-integrative assignment that is structure to provide social work students with the opportunity to apply their academic, professional and personal experience in the field through the application of a project. Therefore due to previous interaction, I decided to study the leadership of the Brantwood Children’s Home here in Montgomery, Alabama. Brantwood is a well-known children’s home that provides a place of stability, safety, and structure for abused, neglected, and at-risk children (About Us: Brantwood Children's Home, 2013). There are several types of residential programs that are available through Brantwood such as the basic residential treatment program; the transitional living program; and the independent living program. For each individual program there are age group restriction along with other restrictions. Brantwood also have an on-site educational program for grades 5th through 8th grade. According to the text book from my understanding, Brantwood is an example of the fourth type of organization that was presented.
This study will attempt to differentiate between the two based on definitions, characteristics, tax laws, funding sources, organizational structure, incentives, leadership styles and human resources. This study will include semi structured interviews by the CEO of Guadenzia, a for profit organization in Baltimore City that provides counseling services for at risk youth in Northwest Baltimore and The Director of Northwest Baltimore Youth Services, Inc., a non-profit organization that also provides counseling services to at risk youth in Northwest Baltimore. This information will then be examined in regards to their similarities and differences.
Child Advocates works with court appointed volunteers to break the cycle of child abuse. Child Advocates works with people of all races and social classes. Since abuse and neglect is not specific to a particular race, gender, age, or social class. Each court appointed advocated is assigned one case at a time. A child advocate is guided by their advocacy coordinator which enables them to perform a thorough investigation of the case.

Every year The Salvation Army helps about 30 million people each year. They help millions of people provide shelter, help disaster survivors, overcome poverty and many more other ways to help the world become a better and more unified community.

Imagine you have just turned 9 years old and in a whirlwind of uncertainty you have just been removed by Child Protective Services from the only home you have ever known. You have been subjected to trauma; physically abused, verbally abused, and to some extent neglected as well. You now live in a temporary shelter where you are housed with 8 other children your age being taken care of by various staff; you are scared and lost, unsure about your future. You are forced to leave the only school you have ever attended in order to attend a school closer to your new “placement.” You have been torn from your family and friends making you feel all the more alone and frightened. This process of movement in school and placement will occur several times over the next few years placing you in a continual state of chaos. Each school transition moves you further behind in a perpetual state of academic catch up. Although this story was hypothetical, this is the long-standing reality for many foster youth. Although foster parenting is one of the most rewarding experiences, it can also be an exhausting journey. The parent must have compassion, understanding, and tolerance for the children. It involves nurturing and providing a safe environment to previously traumatized or neglected children. And the children must grow and learn from their experiences. Both the parents and the children must overcome the frustration and exhaustion in the system. Inadequate service and training can lead to poor family bonding. Therefore, a child needs nurturing to be a functional citizen of society. The foster care system is supposed to offer a family, not perpetrators. The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.
Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in 1912 and since its humble beginnings, the organization has grown to 3.2 million members—and that is just in the United States. Low created the organization to give girls the opportunity to develop into leaders and give back to their communities. Today, the Girl Scouts’ mission statement says, “Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place” ("Facts about Girl Scouting”). This is a new, modern mission statement, but it holds true to the ideals that Low imagined for all girls. By joining Girl Scouts, girls are given the support of a whole community and the tools to achieve their dreams.
The Girl Scouts has existed for over a century and is still very relevant today. It started out as the Girl Guides. Originally, it was only found in one small area of Savannah, consisting of two small groups of girls. However, it soon became popular, and not only were girls from all over Savannah joining, but it was officially incorporated as a nationwide organization in 1915, with several thousand members (Juliette Gordon Low 3). Today, it is still a positive opportunity for girls in their youth to be more active and involved in helping others. The Girl Scouts has been the most influential organization for girls and their communities for decades, and continues to have a strong impact on society today.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new, its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and support millions of young people all over the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well as adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society.
Interacting with others, in the context of a social institution, is a common phenomenon that takes place every day. Through this socialization, members within society interact and learn about what is expected of them. These social expectations are most commonly communicated through socialization agents, such as the family, media, peers, and religion. To start, the family is one of the social institutions that each individual is born into. By interacting with parents, and maybe even brother and sisters, a baby begins to understand what behavior is and is not normal and expectable. Through the influence of family members and the individual 's interaction with others in society, the individual begins to form his/her own views and beliefs. This view of the family is known as the functionalist theory.
