The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet has been a precedent for all facets of romance for centuries, what with the dramatic, flowery language and tragic storyline. One aspect of this storyline, the idea of giving up friends and family for love, does not sit right with me. True love is not worth abandoning your loved ones and and friends.
Imagine, for instance, that Romeo and Juliet’s escapade did not take place in the early times. It would be safe to assume that breakups almost never happened, what with the belief that “Women grow by men.”(Shakespeare pg. 388, Act 1 line 95). However, in modern times, there is much more choice involved, if only on the females end. With so many variables in play, falling outs betwixt lovers are too regular a event. Correspondingly, if you left everything for a partner, everything you had known for your whole life, and severed your relationships with the ones dear to you, what would happen when you broke up? Your friends would be left to pick up the pieces. The Friar wisely observed that “They stumble that run fast.” (Shakespeare pg. 411, Act 2 line 940), and stumble the lovesick pair surely did. However, I do have family and friends. Between kin there is a spoken or unspoken agreement to stay by each other's sides not matter what, whether it be a broken heart or a family tragedy, and while I haven’t experienced true love before I have experienced loss. About four years ago I lost my grandmother, and the year after that my classmate. These were very hard on me; they were the first time i had experienced death.
