Beowulf, a great hero who travels to the land of the Danes to help king Hrothgar take on evil monsters like Grendel. Darkness affects the atmosphere of Beowulf by staying alert to go into battle at any given moment. Historically, darkness means the unknown, a place where evil lurks around, where monsters stay. In Beowulf, the dark is used to its full potential, painting a picture of the monsters and evilness that Beowulf must face. In Beowulf, the differences between light and darkness, heroism and villainy, and life and death show’s the exploration of good versus evil’s unavoidable struggle between these opposing sides. Their evilness is intensified by their connection to the dark, showing their monstrous image. Darkness not only represents their physical habitat, but also symbolizes their evil nature. The darkness serves to highlight the heroism of Beowulf and show how much courage he has. As he battles these creatures in their dark lairs, his bravery strikes even harder. In some of the settings where Beowulf confronts the monsters, it shows the uncertainty and danger, they are in. According to the text “Out from the marsh, from the foot of misty hills and bogs, bearing God’s hatred Grendel came, hoping to kill”. The darkness makes his bravery noticeable as he willingly goes into the unknown to combat evil. Likewise, “None of the wise ones regretted his going, much as he was loved by the Geats”. Grendel and his mother symbolize their evil nature by staying in the murky depths of hell. A place where light is avoided, reflecting their sinister character.
