Falling For Temptations In “ The Whistle” a short essay by Benjamin Franklin, he observes that people sacrifice too much for their temptations, he demonstrates this by illustrating people who make impulse decisions. One type of person who falls for their temptations is someone who gives into something just to fulfill an immediate desire. The first example in Franklin's story, is himself. He explains how he falls for the idea of this great whistle, and he gives all he has for it, despite the actual cost of it. “I went directly to a shop where there they sold toys for children; and being charmed with the sound of a whistle , that I met by the way in the hands of another boy, I voluntarily offered and gave all my money for one” (Franklin 46). …show more content…
One other example used in Franklin's story would be when he states “When I met with a man of pleasure, sacrificing every laudable improvement of the mind, or of his fortune to mere corporeal sensations, and ruining his health in their pursuit” (Franklin 46). This man is providing harm to himself rather than pleasure. The man sacrifices every “laudable improvement of the mind” (Franklin 46) just to fulfill a strong desire. Franklin tells the man “You gave too much for the whistle” (Franklin 46). What Franklin means by saying this is that the man did the same thing Franklin did when he bought the whistle. Didn’t think twice, just acted. The man was willing to sacrifice what he had for a simple temptation. This is often seen in real life situations, and is portrayed very often in many movies. A man or woman can be very tempted to cheat on his or her spouse due to lust and their sexual desire to have that someone else . Often enough, though this can be subsided, but it’s when it can’t that it gets very dangerous. For example on the movie The Other Woman the husband is cheating on his wife with not only one, but multiple partners because he feels insecure about himself and feels the need to have multiple women in his life to make himself feel “wanted”. It’s instances like these that people need to think twice before something happens to determine if it’s really worth the consequences because something that catastrophic will have a great impact for more than one
Ben Franklin of Old Philadelphia is a children’s nonfiction book about Ben Franklin and his life from a boy to a successful adult. This book was written by Margaret Cousins. The 141 pages in the book was published in 1952.
Strong feelings towards another can lead to imprudent actions. Throughout The Book Thief Liesel, Rudy, and Hans make impetuous decisions due to their strong emotions towards another. From reading this novel one can conclude that there is a very fine line between irrationality and bravery. Most of the decisions and subsequent actions made in the story could be regarded as brave but in truth many of these decisions were impetuous and ill thought out. In fact many of the characters subsequently came to this conclusion as well. The characters could have achieved more by executing logically planed actions instead of acting on the spur of the moment and jeopardizing their lives or the lives of others. It is amazing that even polar opposites emotions like love and hate result in the same irrational consequences as exemplified by Rudy, Hans and Liesel.

The book travels through Franklin’s experiments, his travels in Europe, and his role in the American revolution. The book begins when Franklin retires from business and becomes a gentleman. It was when he became a gentleman, it allowed him to analyze the world around him. “Indeed, he could not drink a cup of tea without wondering why the tea leaves at the bottom gathered in way rather than another,” a quote from Edmund S. Morgan’s book, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin spent a great deal of time in Britain before returning to America. When he returned, he threw himself into the American revolution, which sent him to France. After he accomplished his duties in France, he returned back home to America where he ran for public office.

This autobiography gives us many details of how the colonies where and offers and an overall image of the development of British North America which later turned into the United States. Due to the fact that this book was originally written for Franklin's son, the book concentrates in personal information and has very little information about other topics. However, there are some topics that can be extracted from his writings; one of them is gender. Even though, Franklin never talks openly about gender, we can observe how in his writing these roles are clearly assigned. In this paper, we will analyze how Benjamin's Franklin autobiography showcases the importance of gender in the early eighteenth century. Gender can be analyzed in Franklins book by looking at different topics. The Greek philosopher Democritus once said, “It is greed to do all the talking but not to want to listen at all.” Democritus is describing how some people can become so wrapped up in themselves that they forget to acknowledge the world around them, and eventually neglect all other things taking place in their lives. In Joseph Heller’s novel, “Catch-22”, Milo Minderbinder is a perfect example of what Democritus was describing. However, Milo’s intentions of pleasing his squadron eventually fade away as he is exposed to the black market of the food trade. He finds excitement in collecting and selling various cuisines to many countries, transforming him into a greedy entrepreneur. Milo Minderbinder’s desire for power over others becomes so great throughout the novel that he sees his actions as commonplace, showing that his conscience is absent or misguided while he makes his decisions. While telling the story of Milo, Heller gives readers a chance to delve into the mind of a man who transforms from good hearted man, to a successful businessman, and finally into a ruthless profiteer.

The tone of the essay is pretty straightforward. Benjamin Franklin means what he writes and thinks. There is no pun or sarcasm in this piece. He does however seem to put an apostrophe where the "e" of the past participle goes. This is something that they did during his lifetime. It is something that the audience can recognize right away because it catches your eye right off the back. An example of this is "...that I conciev'd the bold and..." Benjamin Franklin lists his virtues in a numerical order of their importance. A person could also think by looking at Benjamin Franklin's essay that it could be more of a science lab report. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, lends itself to be an indispensible literary work that reinforces and challenges the core values and ideals that Benjamin Franklin expresses in his Autobiography. In the provided passage, the young Franklin arrives in Philadelphia in hopes of becoming a new self-made man and begins his journey with little money and few resources much like Gatsby. After arriving by boat, he tries to pay the people of the boat for his voyage but his payment is initially refused because he rowed the boat in order to get to Philadelphia. Franklin insists that they take his payment and says “A man is sometimes more generous when he has but a little money than when he has plenty, perhaps through fear of being thought to have but little.” Eager to make a good first impression on the people of Philadelphia, Franklin attempts to establish that he is of substantial wealth that he is capable of paying for his own fare even if it is not required. Upon walking into town, he becomes hungry and inquires a boy about the location of the nearest bakery. Franklin proceeds to walk into the bakery asking for a biscuit then discovers that they are not made in Philadelphia, so he asks for a three-penny loaf. Once again, he does not receive a three-penny loaf but instead is given “three great puffy rolls.” Surprised by the amount of bread he obtains for a few pennies, Franklin eats one of them and walks into a Quakers meeting-house. After sitting down for a short period of time, he falls asleep during the meeting but is kindly woken afterwards without a word of complaint. Franklin speaks of principality and inclination. His idea was to produce the principle man with the awareness of man's natural inclination. Throughout the text Franklin provides examples from his own life that contradicts his moral and social philosophies. These contradictions are mostly caused by natural inclinations. Franklin uses these contradictions to educate people to be aware of their natural inclinations and to try and overcome them. Franklin's realizes that improving oneself is a road with many imperfections. Not even the "self-made man" was completely perfect.
We make choices every hour, every minute, and every second of our lives; whether big or small our choices are slowly putting us in the direction we choose or end up.
