As a young boy, Franklin receives a few copper coins from friends and family as a holiday gift. Ecstatically, he goes to the store and buys a whistle. When he arrives back at home, he decides to melodically play and play to boast in front of his family about his new toy. Annoyed by his playing, his brother, sister and cousin inquire about the price of the whistle. When he responds, they mention that he paid much more than the whistle is worth. Wallowing, he dreams about all of the other things he could have bought with the extra coinage. In the parable, like many seven year olds, Benjamin Franklin didn’t stop to think about the consequences of his actions. He saw the whistle and new he had to have it. Before thinking he offered all of his money
to the store owner in exchange for the whistle. He found out later that he had paid quadruple the price. This was the metaphor used throughout the essay, The Whistle by Benjamin Franklin. People giving too much before realizing the potential recourse for their decisions. Not just monetarily, but in relationships, and all other factors of life. It’s human nature to do so, easy to observe, hard to break the habit. When comparing the whistle situation to a relationship, Franklin spoke of his observation of a couple, “When I see a beautiful sweet-tempered girl married to an ill-natured brute of a husband, "What a pity," say I, "that she should pay so much for a whistle!” (Franklin 12.) This explains that often times in life, people choose to put all that they have in to a relationship that is not necessarily healthy for them. The women in the story was kind, and she paid too much for her whistle, meaning she gave too much into a relationship that was not worth her while. Another example Benjamin Franklin gives to further prove his point has to do with a man and his wealth. Benjamin Franklin observed a man selling their soul for money. He states, “I knew a miser, who gave up every kind of comfortable living, all the pleasure of doing good to others, all the esteem of his fellow-citizens, and the joys of benevolent friendship, for the sake of accumulating wealth, "Poor man," said I, "you pay too much for your whistle” (Franklin 9.) This man was very materialistic and selfish, he gave up love and friendship all so he could be rich. He then speaks, “When I saw another fond of popularity, constantly employing himself in political bustles, neglecting his own affairs, and ruining them by that neglect, "He pays, indeed," said I, "too much for his whistle” (Franklin 8). A man so desperate for fortune and fame that he ruins his own life for popularity. Benjamin Franklin inferred that life is more than fame and fortune. In the concluding paragraph, Benjamin Franklin explains that “paying too much for a whistle” happens many times in life. Although it’s a hard habit to break, humans continually give and give and don’t receive what they should in return. He states that if the right temptation struck, he may make the same poor decision as everyone else he lectured about (Franklin 14). Benjamin Franklin’s essay The Whistle like many of his essays and short stories, invites the reader to view his life lesson, and to learn from it. If a person makes the mistakes that he made, they may end up being embarrassed and disappointed; and yet they’ll probably do it again.

The book travels through Franklin’s experiments, his travels in Europe, and his role in the American revolution. The book begins when Franklin retires from business and becomes a gentleman. It was when he became a gentleman, it allowed him to analyze the world around him. “Indeed, he could not drink a cup of tea without wondering why the tea leaves at the bottom gathered in way rather than another,” a quote from Edmund S. Morgan’s book, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin spent a great deal of time in Britain before returning to America. When he returned, he threw himself into the American revolution, which sent him to France. After he accomplished his duties in France, he returned back home to America where he ran for public office.
Benjamin Franklin’s ethics helped convey to the audience that they were not just listening to another representative's opinion in the room. His “diplomatic skills”(43) in this speech helped make the delegates listen and take his view into consideration. Such a reputation can make people ponder and contemplate his words and meanings. Franklin does not approach the debate with unfair reasoning or a lack of knowledge. In fact, he mentions “when you assemble a number of men...you inevitably assemble with those men and all their prejudices...”(43) showing that he is aware of other people’s opinions and thoughts. He uses the other delegates opinions to attempt a compromise.
While writing a letter to his son, he begins to explain his reasoning for writing in a somewhat formal fashion, stating what he felt was the purpose of his life. His light hearted nature would show through when he lightly mocked previous statements he had written. He shows a lot of pride in all of the accomplishments he had made in his life. He refers to his past mistakes as ‘errata’ which is a term used for correcting printing mistakes. This suggests that he simply viewed his errors in life as easily replaced with the greater things he has gone on to do. He stressed the importance of hard work and that it would certainly lead to greatness and wealth. In part two, a seemingly older Franklin focuses his tone away from entertaining himself and his son. He goes on to explain a series of models and virtues that would lead to a happy and fulfilling life. On the opening page, Franklin reveals the book’s epistolary format by writing, “Dear Son,” going on to admit that he’s made some mistakes in the past and to recollect that past is a way to relive it. Franklin has a method of teaching that I believe is a proper way of getting ideas across. “Do as I say, not as I do.” I feel that this statement alone totally defeats the characterization of Franklin being a hypocrite. The flaws in Franklin’s character should not be analyzed as closely as some look at them. It is all part of a learning process, which he has passed on to us as readers.
The Franklin of the General Prologue is the only pilgrim of social substance apart from the knight, whose pretensions Chaucer seems to spare. He rides alongside the Sergeant of the Law, which argues that he is, himself, a legally minded man (indeed he has been sheriff; knight of the shire; county auditor and head of the local magistrates). He is described as the "St Julian of his country", so open and generous in his hospitality that "It snewed in his hous of mete and drynke". He is described as "sangwyn" (the type which is generally jolly, healthy and good tempered) and he is an Epicurean - one dedicated to pleasurable life through the exercise of virtue. As a "vavasour", he is a landowner, holding title to his lands outright - not occupying them in return for services to another landowner. He is not aristocratic, but rather a member of a newly emerging landowning class who *aspire* to the aristocracy, but are not high born. Clearly the Franklin would like to be a "real" knight, and certainly feels keenly the fact that his own son is a wastrel and a gambler who would rather talk to "cherls" than learn "gentillesse". It becomes clear almost immediately that the Franklin is obsessed by the notion of gentillesse and "trouthe" in marriage.

Throughout the text Franklin provides examples from his own life that contradicts his moral and social philosophies. These contradictions are mostly caused by natural inclinations. Franklin uses these contradictions to educate people to be aware of their natural inclinations and to try and overcome them. Franklin's realizes that improving oneself is a road with many imperfections. Not even the "self-made man" was completely perfect.
