Discuss how the nurse manager might use benchmarking to compare the unit with other departments in terms of governance productivity, budgeting, educational activities, and shared.
Benchmarking measures the quality of services rendered to the patient’s in a health care environment compared to another organization of similar setting (Dunham-Taylor & Pinczuk, 2010, p. 139). Using benchmarking as a tool for an organization, allows individuals the opportunity to learn from one another, identify performance gaps and implement the best practices for the patient’s (De Korne et al., 2012, p. 189). Nurse Managers should be creative thinkers and find ways to increase productivity on their unit. As thing evolve and changes occurs within the health care

setting, the organization leaders “should be long-term thinkers who anticipate future threats an opportunities and equip their organizations with the means to face market changes (De Korne et al., 2012, p. 196). At the hospital in which I work at, we have a committee called the “Best Practice”. This committee finds a critical deficiency in our work setting, perform trials and research the best technique for improvement of quality of care with the patient’s. The committee worked with the nurses and physician to improve quality of care rendered to the patients. For example, there have been a lot of patient’s coming through the ER and to the unit with foley catheters in place without a justification of reason for the catheter. There were cases of urinary tract infections within hospitals and this was associated with the foley catheter. The insurance companies did not want to pay for the treatment for a urinary tract infection because they were blaming the hospital staff for negligence. Of course, this cost the hospital a lot of money when they were required to cover for the cost of service. This affected the hospital budget, which eventually affected the productivity of the staff. A twenty-four hour catheter was implanted by the committee and it stated a patient could only keep a foley catheter in for twenty four hours. The order for a foley catheter was only good for twenty four hours and the doctor had to come up with other intervention for elimination besides having a foley catheter. This protocol is working and there are less incidence of urinary tract infections associated with a urinary catheter. How does benchmarking improve "team" performance? Benchmarking can improve the team performance by identifying the problem on the unit in which affects the performance.
The unit manager or leaders within the organization, can come up with a solution for the identified problem and this will increase performance and productivity of the staff. Unresolved problems on the unit, I believe can affect the moral and productivity of the staff. In the end, when the moral and productivity is down, this can affect the type of quality care rendered to the …show more content…
patient. How does it promote healthy competition and unit pride?
I believe individuals who are successful often compete with other individuals and when they achieve their goal, this instill pride within their work. Also when individuals are complemented on the appreciation for their hard work or rewarded, the individual will more likely continue to improve or do a better job performance. For example on my unit, we have a board called “tah-dah” and during the course of the day, each person on the staff can complement another person on their job performance with the comment on a sticky note pined up on the wall. For example “Tah-Dah, thanks Amy for answering my call light for me, when I was tied up in another room”. When the person being compliment reads a comment written about them, this really boost the moral and makes the individual feel appreciated.
How can benchmarking be used in your plan of action?
Benchmarking can be used in a plan of action by identifying a problem within an organization and researching another particular organization with similar problems but effective solution. This will allow the opportunity for education and performing the necessary actions to improve overall outcome of the patient’s
health.
Not only does The Francis Report call for more compassionate care, but it also states that stronger leadership is required of all ward nurse managers. It also insists on a change with regards to the appraisal and support system for nurses. This appraisal system is a means of assessing the performance of nurses so that any shortcomings can be corrected through methods such as training and transfer. On the other hand, a positive assessment is to be rewarded by promotion.
The first area identified for improvement is praising people for a job well done. Too many times I have passed on the opportunity to publicly recognize member either formally or informally for their efforts. From my point of view, when a task is assigned it is expected to be completed to the highest level of competency. Meeting this standard leaves little room for exemplary performance to be recognized. I intend to correct this by taking
As defined by the American of Nurses Association (ANA, 2002), “Nursing-Sensitive Indicators are those indicators that capture care or its outcomes most affected by nursing care.” The ANA uses the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) to statistically test the relationships between nursing interventions, staffing levels, and positive patient outcomes (Nursing Quality - NDNQI, 2016). These indicators utilize unit specific data enabling action planning and intervention according to the unit if improvement is needed (Nursing Quality – NDNQI, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to show how Good Samaritan Medical Center’s 5th floor, pavilion 2, Medical Surgical/Oncology unit uses nurse sensitive indicators such as pain management,
In most aspects of life the saying “less is always more” may ring true; however when it comes to providing quality care to patients, less only creates problems which can lead to a decrease in patient’s quality of life as well as nurse’s satisfaction with their jobs. The massive shortage of nurses throughout the United States has gotten attention from some of the most prestigious schools, news media and political leaders. Nurses are being burnt out from their jobs, they are being overworked and overlooked. New nurses are not being properly trained, and old nurses are on their way to retirement. All the while the rate of patient admissions is on the rise. Nurses are reporting lower satisfaction in their job positions and hospital retention rates are at an all-time low, conversely this is affecting all patients’ quality of care. As stated in the article Addressing The Nurse Shortage To Improve The Quality Of Patient Care “According to an Institute of Medicine report, Nurses are the largest group of health care professionals providing direct patient care in hospitals, and the quality of care for hospital patients is strongly linked to the performance of nursing staff”.
This means that when an employee does something positive within the work setting you reward that employee e.g. praising that employee for the excellent work that they have carried out. This will then increase the chances of the employee doing an excellent job in the future. (managementstudyguide.com)
Performance improvement is vital to patient safety, quality of care, and patient satisfaction. Regular and an objective view at clinical outcomes is important for the nurse practitioner to engage in to ensure that his or her practice. This continual focus on improving outcomes ensures that quality care is being provided and optimal outcomes are met. This capstone project was a critical evaluation of the performance of a large family practice clinic. The goal of this project was to quantify the performance of the providers in the practice in their treatment of diabetes.
Nurse to patient ratios are extremely paramount in assisting with overall patient mortality and wellness of our nurses. It is an issues which unfortunately affected by legislation of our government (which is affect specifically on a monetary basis). My research via Academic Search Complete allowed me to identify topics that assist my PICOT question, and enables me to further analyze and research to find out what issues directly affect is matter. Proper nurse to patient ratio, operational costs, government regulation, nurse work life and health, patient wellness, and nursing procedures and duration of those procedures are all affected by this topic and we must ensure that all are properly balanced.
Problem solving is when there is a problem or issue that needs to be resolved. When there is a problem with a patient the nursing staff needs to try and resolve it to make all parties satisfied. When trying to solve a problem, keep in mind about the core attribute safeguarding patients autonomy. In this core attribute, it involves the patient wanting to be involved in their health care plan, as well as make their own decisions as long as they are competent. (Bu & Jezewski, 2006) Once the problem is identified the nursing staff along with the patient, need to form a plan or possible goals that will help solve the problem. There will be many problems that can’t be complete...
According to Keith Sisson, the practice of Benchmarking or “continuous improvement” was first introduced in the 1950’s by Toyota. Benchmarking is the process used by organizations to improve specific processes within the organization. Benchmarking focuses on obtaining the “best practice” for the company and not measuring based on the maximum performance. Benchmarking is done by obtaining information from one organization and improving that information to be used in another organization within the same market. The two primary types of benchmarking are Internal and External. Internal benchmarking compares practices and performance between teams, individuals or groups within the organization. External benchmarking compares the organizational performance across industries. Benchmarking helps companies understand their type of industry better since they are able to compare the techniques used by competitor companies and enhance them to make it work more efficient for the company. “Benchmarking is a management technique aimed at detecting “best practice” in other organizations and then adopting it in one’s own.” Benchmarking. (2011).
Good leadership, fostering a culture of change and safety, team work are essential in implementing quality improvement and risk management in the organization. Leaders and the governing body must demonstrate commitment to the processes and define their expectations for all stakeholders. Leadership team should make sure that the team’s attention is focused on the core business of the organization, which is to provide care and treat patients in a safe and high quality clinical environment. There are different tools that can be used for quality improvement that also applies to analyzing risk issues. These are measurement of quality, benchmarking, RCA, FMECA, and so

A benchmarking system is the infrastructure and organization linkage necessary to deploy, reinforce and institutionalize a benchmarking process.
To achieve this, nurse managers constantly monitor and evaluate organizational performance, while working to improve employee and patient safety and satisfaction.
