Throughout the course of human history, and now, education has been, and always be, arguably one of the most important aspects of society. For example, education can help people overcome obstacles that life brings to them. For instance, during Ben Carson’s childhood, he faced many barriers; however, education—he went to Yale—lifted him up out of his poverty and he became a well-known neuroscientist. In addition to helping people overcome poverty, education can lift people to highs that they never knew that dreamed of reaching, thus lifting communities. Moreover, education can open the minds of the people, of all ages, to new thoughts and ideas, which further aids in the advancement of new technologies, hardware, and software. In other words, they often come out of college with a diploma but are unchanged. Meaning that they do not see the big picture, and come out of college being as ignorant as when they came in. Due to this, people continue to make the same mistakes former generations made, thus society has become more educated intellectually, but not morally.
During Martin Luther King’s time at Morehouse, he wrote for the school newspaper, the Maroon Tiger. Two of his most notable articles, he titled “The Purpose of Education”. In first of the two articles, he explains how education has to functions in society. The first is to gear the mind to be strong and focused so people can always easily questioning the world around them. Education does an excellent job doing this. People are enabled to think critically and analytically when they approach problems or are looking for ways to improve systems.
