Throughout Ann Patchett’s novel Bel Canto, the many characters are changed and driven by the power of music. The novel contains many powerful themes, all of which transcend language. Music, religion, and love are all key components and change each character in a different way. The element the reader can see most prevalent in chapters five and six is music. Music makes characters change, feel, and shifts control in the hostage situation. Some of Patchett’s characters are driven completely by music, as it is the love of their lives.
