Being Transgender: Is It Easier Now? From the famous male Olympian Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner to the popular shows Becoming Us or I Am Jazz. There seems to be more and more transgender stories coming into the media. The media also seems to show many changes being made in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. The world seems to be changing and becoming more understanding to the LGBT community, but is it really? Are people actually starting to respect these people as people? Sure, maybe same sex marriage. What about people those that are transgender (people whose gender does not match to their biological sex assigned at birth)? According to the surveys taken by the website End Trans Discrimination, 41% of transgenders have attempted suicide. That is nearly half. That is attempted, not committed. So you can only imagine how many have went through with it. The End Trans Discrimination website also stated 51% of transgenders have been bullied or harassed for being transgender. That is half. These people feel so unappreciated and hurt that they take their own lives. Do these percentages sound as if the world is starting to accept them or even respect them? One of the things I have learned from having a nephew that is transgender, you try every way possible to protect them. Like a mother bird does with her baby birds. Although, people do not need to accept their decision or their way of living their life. They just have to respect it. That is all transgender people want is to be respected and treated as a human.
