I’m 5’2” and I’ve always been one of the shortest people in my class. The disadvantages of being short are always talked about, for example, being used as an armrest by taller people and the occasional short joke. I like to believe that there are more pros than cons to being vertically challenged. So let’s cut the small talk and I’ll tell you about some of the major benefits of being short. In crowded places, short people have a variety of advantages. People that are short are experts at weaving through large dense crowds. It’s an important asset if you’re at a concert and you’re trying to get closer to the stage. Most of the time, they’ll let you go in front of them since they don’t need to worry about you blocking their view.
The perceived goal of children, or their parents, in Bailey’s article is to be of normal height at adulthood; but what is normal? The average height for American men is 5’9” and for women it is 5’4” (Bailey). According to Robert W. Steele, M.D., “alterations [in growth] may be in the form of a growth slow down, accelerated growth, or disproportionate grow...
Lastly, Progeria patients need to by all means avoid dehydration and big crowds of tall peers in order to avoid the risk of injury.
Although a reader cannot assume the narrator is also the author, in some instances the resemblance is uncanny. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, drew on her own experience of undergoing the infamous Rest Cure of Doctor Silas Weir Mitchell to write her story. According to Gilman, “[The story] was not intended to drive people crazy, but to save people from being driven crazy, and it worked” (The Forerunner). Through her platform of writing Gilman successfully illustrated the inferiority women suffered. The Rest Cure led people to believe that women should “live as domestic a life as far as possible” and only be allowed to “have but two hours' intellectual life a day,” (The Forerunner). These restrictions propagated the idea that women were to be seen and not heard. In addition, the only place women were to be seen was in the household. The work of Doctor Mitchell shows just how controlled many women’s lives were at this time. Women succumbed to the will of their spouses constantly. Throughout “The Yellow Wallpaper” Gilman uses symbolism, specifically the nursery and the wallpaper, to exemplify the inferiority women dealt with in society and how it inevitably drove some women to try and find their freedom.
Wendy's assessment of the situation is correct-all children must grow up. Or do they? Most of the time, children do grow up. They become adults. They live their lives. There are not many Peter Pans out there who refused to grow up and succeed. However, in some extremely rare cases, stress prevents children from growing. If you are short, you may be thinking that perhaps you suffered from this type of stress and you did not grow to your full potential. Perhaps your parents divorced, or you moved around frequently. This kind of stress, nevertheless, is not severe enough to prevent a child from growing. Rather, those who suffer from this disorder are the children who are extremely neglected (mistreated in orphanages, locked in rooms, completely neglected). The result is an extremely rare disease known as psychogenic or psychosocial dwarfism. What are the causes of this rare disease? How much is biological and how much is social? Why is it that stress can have such a profound effect on the bodies' normal development and maintenance?
Dwarfism. Extremely short limbs and bowed legs can make it difficult for people to perform daily tasks. Leg lengthening surgery can not only help straighten legs but also add inches that will make daily routines easier to help them lead more normal
The two earlier existing schools, industrial schools and boarding schools, were united into residential schools by the Canadian Government in 1864 (Reimer, 2010:36). Miller (1996) has explained “the governing of the schools had the form of joint venture between state and church (Roman , Anglican, Methodist or United Church) where the state was responsible for the financing (Miller, 1996:25). ’’ The Canadian Government was responsible directly when it came to establishing residential schools for Aboriginal children.
Most dwarfing conditions are described as either short-limbed or short-trunked dwarfism. Achondroplasia is a form of short-limbed dwarfism. This means that their sitting height is within range of an average person’s sitting height, but their legs are just shorter. The disorder’s involvement tends to be rhizomelic, which means the thighs and arms are shorter, rather than the calves and forearms. The most common problem with Achondroplasia is the abnormal bone growth during development. Because of this, the features are able to be seen at birth (medscape.com).
Have you ever been picked on or made fun of because your nationality is different from someone else’s or the color of your skin? If so, then the person who did it was probably a racist person. Racism still exists within all cultures. Some people won’t admit they’re a racist, but their actions and words prove otherwise. Most people won’t directly discriminate other races, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen everyday.
Other than the most apparent signs, short stature and short limbs, there are a number of symptoms that can affect the person as a result of this condition. Many individuals experience delays in early motor development (such as learning to sit up, crawl and walk), frequent ear infections which could increase the risk of hearing loss, bowing of the legs, sleep apnea, pressure on spinal cord at the base of the skull, hydrocephalus, weight gain resulting in joint pain, and crowded teeth. Additionally they are at risk for many spinal problems such as severe hunching, lower back pain, spinal stenosis, and numbness in the legs as well as arthritis. For people that suffer from a type dwarfism, day to day life can be very difficult for them because they suffer from so many physical symptoms. It can greatly affect the types of activities that they can participate in. Not only do they suffer from physical symptoms, but they also experience more symptoms that are not directly related to their condition. People who have dwarfism look different and as a result it makes them vulnerable to teasing and bullying. This can lead them to feeling isolated from their peers, having a low self esteem, feeling depressed, and it can impact their work and school performance. There are many misconceptions about people who have this condition and they are often labeled as “midgets”. Most people that have a form
In today’s world, there are many social issues, like poverty, vandalism and unemployment. However, prejudice has become the most dramatic one. Prejudging people for their appearance is a common practice that humans perform. People are not only ridiculed for their color, but also by their religion, sex or age. Therefore, I consider that racism, ageism and sexism are the three major problems in our society and we need to cease them immediately. Much of our world’s history were based upon racism. In the 1600’s, white men used Africans as slaves and treated them as they were not human. "Colored" people were not even allowed to use the same drinking fountains as white people. Fortunately, in the last three decades, race prejudice has taken a positive turn. Many rights progra...
Racism has often played a central role in conflicts between groups of people. Racism is the intentional or unintentional use of power to isolate, separate and exploit others as defined in the Webster dictionary. People generally respond to others differently based on what they know, which may include superficial characteristics often associated with race. This paper will express my opinion of how racism will effect America. I will base information from Webster’s definition of Racism, reading assigned for the course, and some of my own ideas on ways to overcome this obstacle as a nation.
Last quarter, we had many robbers around campus. So during the night, there were many cops walking along High street to try their best to protect students. However, most cops tended to stop blacks and ask them where they were going and why they hung out so late at night. Why do people suspect blacks? There must be a reason. Some people may say that most students reported that blacks attacked them. But there were several cases showed that the robbers were whites. In my opinion, prejudice might be the reason why the police suspect blacks around school. “Prejudice is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often an ethnic or racial minority.” (Schaefer, 2008, p. 248) Even though the emancipation of slaves happened hundred years ago, prejudice and bias still remain in this society. We might dislike our roommate because he or she talks really loud and does not shower. And it is considered prejudice. However, if we stereotype him or she based on race or religions, it is a form of prejudice. It is true that we tend to define other people from our own perspectives. If prejudice forms, it may affect people’s behaviors. But what can prejudice lead to? How prejudice forms? And are there any methods that we can use to reduce prejudices? When it comes to prejudice, we may first think about discrimination and ethnocentrism, which are the negative effects of prejudice. Prejudices can result in discrimination and it may result from ethnocentrism. Besides, prejudice and bias result from subjects we do not know. And we can reduce prejudices.
Although people are different in many ways, few differences are more obvious than dwarfism. Because dwarfism is relatively rare, not many worry about unprejudiced treatment of dwarfs. But dwarfs deal with the same issues as “normal” people, while also trying to overcome the problems posed by their abnormally small height. The novel Stones from the River makes us aware of these problems and raises questions:What is dwarfism? And how do dwarfs feel about their conditions? And how does people’s treatment of dwarfs affect their outlook on society in general?
L. L. Thurston’s theory of intelligence identifies seven recognizable intellectual abilities: spatial ability, memory, perceptual speed, word fluency, numerical ability, reasoning, and verbal meaning. Thurman argued multiple factors go into making up intelligence and although there may be some correlation between mental abilities, each ability is relatively independent of each other. A person having remarkable spatial ability or the ability to rotate an object and estimate horizontal and vertical dimensions might be deficient in word fluency or the ability to generate words rapidly.
Mental Retardation Mental retardation is defined as, an individual with limitations in cognitive ability and adaptive behaviors that interfere with learning. Individuals with mental retardation learn at a slower pace, have low IQs, and may reach a level where learning stops. There are no exact causes for mental retardation but some things are associated with the disability. Prenatal development problems, childbirth difficulties, and a childhood brain injury can all lead to mental retardation. An individual with mental retardation might have problems in learning and social skills.
