Being Selfish is the Ultimate Selflessness
Counter-intuitive, yes indeed.
And as a child, I would have vehemently argued against this.
But as you get older you do get wiser from life experiences. And, unfortunately, I have learned this lesson the hard way. The truth is, whether you learn it the easy way or the hard way, that putting yourself first benefits everyone else. Trust me, this is true. Before you start to think of arguments against this let us break down the idea.
No One Knows What You Need Better than You
Your teachers, professors, friends, siblings, and parents will try to get you to do what they want. And what they want (believe it or not) is for you to be a better person. Whether that means being

Being Selfish isn’t Evil
This is for all you good boys and girls out there. I know what you are saying:
“Okay, I should be selfish so how about I go hurt that person who has been picking on me?”
The problem with that is you don’t truly want that. Being selfish is about getting what you truly desire. If you are getting bullied, what you truly desire isn’t revenge but respect. You don’t want revenge on the opposite sex; what you truly desire is love. Or same sex if you swing that way.
That’s why when someone does something extremely violent against their bullies or the person they are obsessed with, more often than not they then turn the gun on themselves.
They didn’t get what they wanted out of life and settled for something that didn’t make them happy.
If you are putting yourself first, you will have no desire to forced people to do what you want. Instead, you want them to do it out of respect, love, and admiration.
People and Society are NOT Depending on You like You
Human nature tells us to want what we can't or don't have. Everything from people to a toy to a kind of hairstyle – we just always want what isn't ours. Chris McCandless from Jon Krakauer's Into The Wild is no exception. He lives his life as part of an upper-middle class family, is smart, and goes to and does well in college, but he still feels like something is missing from his life. He want something completely opposite of the life he's used to. Chris McCandless spent a lot of time looking for something entirely different from what he already had and while he found true happiness it eventually lead to his demise.
“A Good Man is Hard to Find,” written by Flannery O'Connor tells a story of a dysfunctional family on a roadtrip to Florida to illustrate the theme of self-awareness. The main protagonist in this story is the self-centered Grandmother whose lack of self-awareness is the reason why her family, including herself, are murdered by The Misfit (the Floridian convict). Throughout the story, the Grandmother considers herself as a good woman; however, it is through dialogue that reveals her true self. In reality, she is selfish, manipulative, inconsiderate, and dishonest. No matter how much she attempts to manipulate others into thinking she is full of integrity and a good example to follow, her actions contradict everything she wants people to believe.

When I was young, I was always told to do the best I can possibly can and achieve the best of grades. To be flawless and to be exemplary at everything I do. These sayings said to me mostly by my Mom, have led me and helped me to, in many ways become preeminent in my education. As I was growing up those sayings have helped me to achieve excellence wherever possible, and most of the time over achieve excellence.
they finally realize that they were never going to be able to get what they wanted.
We have studied the two major theories that answer the question, “who should I be?”. These theories are egoism and altruism. In this paper, I will argue that the correct moral theory lies in-between the theories of egoism and altruism.
Imagine yourself going out to a neighborhood party trying to relax after a stressful week. You might want to socialize, drink, or watch television. Now try to think about the penalties that can occur when the party gets out of control such as loud outbursts, fighting, and physical behavior. Depending on the setting of the party, there could be a possible chance of violence happening. In this case, the violent actions can result to homicides, shootings, and suicides. Homicides can vary based on age, gender, race, and methods of killing the victim. Shootings are quick reactions to dealing with victim. Suicides result to choosing to kill one’s life. Overall, there are different reasons to why individuals feel the need to kill someone else. It

“Those who care for others… live a life , in a divine way, above others” -Anonymous. Even as small children, we are taught to treat others as we would like to be treated, but as we grow older, the world becomes more complex, and the length to which we should stretch ourselves for others becomes unclear. Some people may believe that one must always put others first, while others put other people’s worries and safety far behind their own. Throughout this year I have gathered artifacts, some support these theories, while others do not, and a rew support my own theory. I believe that the most healthy and appropriate way to approach this moral grey area is to always consider other’s needs and feelings, but you must also consider your needs and know
Selfishness is a term fairly notorious for its meaning. A lot of people accept that being selfish is wrong, but no one knows how this came about and why it matters. Who has the right to decide whether someone gets to be selfish or not? In his article “The unselfishness Trap”, Harry Browne says that the best way for people to be happy is when if everyone sacrifices but me. Thomas Nagel, on the other hand, argues in his article “The Objective Basis of Morality” that being concerned about others is more important. Being selfish, for many people, is evil. By definition, selfishness is to be more concerned about yourself than others, but that would essentially make every living human being a “selfish” being.

Taking revenge is a bitter sweet thing. I have always thought that people should always get what they desire, whether it be a grade, a smile and hug or in some cases, revenge. When I was in high school there seemed to be someone always trying to get me in trouble, they would say things that wouldn’t be true or do things to make me look bad. The fact that I never seemed to do anything to them would make me mad and wonder what I could do to get them back. Revenge would usually come in some sort of verbal put down or I would try to physically hurt them. It always seemed when I would get the revenge right away I would feel really good but as I thought about what I did, and what they did to me I would always feel guilty or wish I would have never done anything to them in return.
