Hook and Background When trying to survive, being emotionally strong is the most important because it is the baseline to other skills which are required to survive. Being emotionally strong Start with something different than other sentences is the most important trait to have because emotions involve staying calm and in order to act in survival situations properly it is important to be able to think of possible solutions or exits. Run on sentence: Don’t start with “So” in this sense, being emotionally strong is the most important trait to have in a survival situation. Such as a snare? This can be seen in the story Sea Devil, by Arthur Morgan. Sea Devil tells the story of a man who went net fishing early in the morning when no one else was …show more content…
“Your Brain On Emergencies” talks about what goes on in your head during emergencies and what you need to do in those situations. In the section labeled “know yourself” when (Sounds weird) the author writes, “During the decision making process, your mind will likely move through three stages: Denial, Deliberation, Decisive action.” The three d’s in this piece of evidence show that in a survival situation one has to use their emotions to realize the danger they are in because they will be in denial which is when they are trying to come up with a safe reason for whatever is going on. (Grammer, run on, change order) This shows the importance of being emotionally strong enough to realize one is in denial so that one (Don’t use “one” more than once) can move on to decisive action after deliberation. (You have to explain what the 3 ds are) A final piece of text for the article is in the section labeled as Denial: This Is Not Happening when the author writes Have you ever heard gunfire in your neighborhood and blamed it on a …show more content…
Being intelligent is important because it is unlocked when one emotionally calms themselves down and this unlocks their thinking, which allows them to use their physical strength. One story that shows the importance of physical strength is the story of building a fire (You have to capitalize and show that it is a title of something) by Jack London. In this story, a man in Alaska who tries to trek to his camp alone with a dog and no extra supplies when he falls into water and then freezes and fails to make a fire and dies. Run on and grammar This story shows how intelligence is required in order to survive which the man lacked, causing him to die. In paragraph 5 when the narrator is just beginning to hike and the story says, “In fact, he carried nothing but the lunch wrapped in the handkerchief.” The man in this story lacked intelligence and it can be seen in this text because prior to him hiking an old man gave him advice to carry supplies and to not go alone and the man lacked the thought of doing this due to his lack of intelligence. Run on. In paragraph 22 when the man has fallen into the river and is trying to build a fire but then the fire is put out with the snow above the tree, “This process continued, spreading out and involving the whole tree. a it grew like an avalanche, and it descended without warning on the man and the fire.” This again shows the lack of intelligence the man lacked because of how
A motivation is a reason someone has for doing something a certain way. The Tiger’s Heart is a story written by Jim Kjelgaard in which the protagonist, Pepe Garcia has been making decisions based on forces within him. These forces all contributed in their own ways for Pepe’s decision making and outcomes in the story. These forces have helped define what Pepe is as a human being within the story. The forces motivating Pepe are security, fear and courage, greed and exploitation, and power. These forces motivated Pepe.
Intelligence means having or showing intelligence, especially of a high level. Charlie is a thirty-seven-year-old man who was given an opportunity to increase his intelligence from an IQ of sixty-two to two hundred. A science fiction short story, “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, was about a man named Charlie who had an operation to improve his intelligence and why it was necessary for him to have the surgery. Charlie, before the operation, could not understand other people. After the operation, he became closer to the characters in his journal, and he was also able to use his skills and intelligence. The operation affected Charlie in many ways because he use to misunderstand others when he was spoken
“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true” (Kierkegaard)- Misleading oneself by accepting things as true or valid when they are not is a common phenomenon of nearly every human being, especially when faced with life changing of threatening situations. Self-deception can therefore be considered an option to escape reality in order to prevent oneself from dealing with the weight of a situation. Basically, those strong influencing psychological forces keep us from acknowledging a threatening situation or truth. However, oftentimes people do not realize that they are deceiving themselves, for it is mostly the action of the subconscious mind to protect especially the psychological well- being. This psychological state is depicted and in Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. He shows that people try to escape reality and seek refuge in self-deception when confronted with life-threatening situations, through characterization, alternate point of view, and the fluidity of time.
Intelligence is a tool with a plethora of uses. It can be used to help people out, or it can destroy humanity. It can also help a person in bonding find ways out of it. Ignorance is bliss, but it’s easier to control a bunch of buffoons than a bevy of intellects. Reading rips open the doors to knowledge that can help break the shackles of ignorance in a way “saving lives”.
Psychologists usually agree that the teenage years are among the most difficult periods in one’s life. Most teens are trying to figure who they are, what they believe, and how they fit into the world around them. Beginning in the late 1970’s, a whole genre of fiction, referred to as coming-of- age literature, emerged and serves, at least for many teens, as believable presentations of young people learning to navigate the difficulties of their lives, often fraught with feelings of rejection, seemingly unresolvable personal turmoil, social problems, school and family issues, etc. Indeed one value of reading is to see and better understand some aspects of ourselves through studying others. The reading of SPEAK, a somewhat controversial book because of its subject matter – rape--, is a worthwhile endeavor in any middle school classroom and offers many valuable life lessons to young teens.
Short story “Here Be Monsters” by Nathan Sellyn depicts a situation where the speaker fails to overcome his emotional struggle in a rational and thoughtful manner.
Is raw intelligence actually important? Or is what you do with said intelligence what actually matters? In “The truth about grit” by Jonah Lehrer, the author writes an analysis of the personality trait commonly referred to as “Grit”. The essay equates grit with perseverance and single-minded focus on a set goal. I agree with this analysis of grit. The first reason that I agree is because grit means to work hard. The second reason is that in order to have grit a person must know how to adapt to adversity. The final reason is that having grit means to have single-minded in one’s attitude.
What seems to be the most important thing, in the face of complete hopelessness and almost certainty of death, is one’s mental stability which becomes almost an impossible goal ...
In a society where watching horror movies is considered a social norm, it is less than surprising that the horror industry makes approximately 500 million dollars with the haunted attractions and 400 million dollars at the box office each year, according to Sonya Chudgar’s article “Blood Money: How the Horror Industry Makes a Killing.” Stephen King, a best-selling writer, screenwriter, columnist, producer and director, who is also well-known as a writer of horror fiction, describes the role that horror movies play in the world. He refers to this role as a “dirty job” (King), and suggests that the job is favorable in that horror movies expose us to malevolence and immorality or tense situations in order to suppress our primal instincts of demanding

Intelligence tests have been developed by scientists as a tool to categorize army recruits or analyze school children. But still discussing what intelligence is, academics have a difficult time defining what intelligence tests should measure. According to the American researcher Thorndike, intelligence is only that what intelligence tests claim it is (Comer, Gould, & Furnham, 2013). Thus, depending on what is being researched in the test and depending on the scientist’s definition of intelligence the meaning of the word intelligence may vary a lot. This essay will discuss what intelligence is in order to be able to understand the intelligence theories and aims of intelligence tests.
When exiled from society, loneliness becomes apparent within a person. The poems The Seafarer translated by S.A.J. Bradley and The Wife?s Lament translated by Ann Stanford have a mournful and forlorn mood. Throughout each poem exists immense passion and emotion. In the two elegiac poems there is hardship, loneliness and uncertainty for each character to live with.
In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person’s well being and success in life. At first I didn’t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One reason for my acceptance of Goleman's theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to provide sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman’s thesis on emotional intelligence.
The true nature of intelligence has been debated more intensely then ever over the last century. As the science of psychology has developed one of the biggest questions it had to answer concerned the nature of Intelligence. Some of the definitions that have been given for intelligence have been the ability to adjust to one’s environment. Of course by such a definition even a person who is generally considered to be dull can be regarded as being intelligent if he can take care of himself. Other definition is such as having the tendency to analyze things around yourself. However it can be argued that such behavior can lead to over-analyzing things and not reacting to one’s environment and dealing with it in an intelligent manner.
When a person utters the word “intelligence,” people tend to think of a genius like Albert Einstein developing some obscure equation that the great majority of the population will never understand. The problem with the definition of intelligence is that people relate intelligence to words like “genius” which require intelligence but do not have the same definition as intelligence. Often, people try to use related words to define intelligence, but these words are unable to define intelligence since many are only different levels of intelligence. While many definitions try to encompass the meaning of intelligence and various definitions describe a small part of intelligence, no definition completely explains intelligence, because intelligence is a concept that is understood only after realizing that intelligence is based on three basic concepts: logic, growth, and emotion. Although many people believe that humans are the only creatures capable of intelligence, other animals exhibit intelligence and are capable of further demonstrate the complex concept of intelligence.
