The bored and brilliant challenge has daily challenges that lessen the use of a cell phone, and allow ourselves to be bored. According to wnyc.org boredom is benifical to humans. Boredom allows people to be creative, to reflect and to grow as individuals. The only issue is that now people are never bored. With phones people have ways to constantly entertain themselves. So, with the bored and brilliant challenge people got to see what it was like being bored with little and no phone usage for the span of 6 days with each challenge getting more “difficult”.
The day 1 challenge was to keep your phone in your pocket or bag while in transit. This one was not that hard for me because I don’t go on my phone a lot in the hallways or in cars. It was awesome not going on social media or not answering texts for awhile. Granted I did come back to a bunch of texts and snapchats that I had to go through and respond to which was a little annoying because it took awhile for me to respond to everyone. After this challenge I actually take the time to put my phone away. I put it upstairs in my room charging for a couple hours while I go and do other things that way I am not constantly on my phone. It is nice not constantly checking my phone for snapchats, texts, calls, etc. Day 5 this day we just had to people watch. This challenge made me realize how often people are on electronics. It is constant for people, the second they feel any ounce of boredom they take out their phones. I think it is actually really sad how often people are on their phones because they really do miss out on seeing a lot. Jenna Wortham’s “Turn Off the Phone (And the Tension)”, most definitely brings the question, “what am I doing?” to mind. This article explains Wortham’s deep opinion on electronic use, and its affects on today’s society. Wortham’s article mentions the idea of going “screenless”, which is removing yourself from your phone or any other device to reconnect with what you’ve been missing in the world. I agree that this strategy is beneficial to those that are attached to their screens. Even though going “screenless” is a work in progress for those that that are completely attached, it is a positive way to view the world in the moment instead of having to capture it for someone else to see,
Do we really need time for ourselves? Many people all over the world question themselves if they need a break from work, daily activities, stress, and school. Mark Bittman had the same problem. He quotes in his essay to professor David Levy claiming that we need time to think, reflect, and to be successful. A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
In addition, the article also says “fiddling with our phones,... adresses a basic human need to cure boredom by any means necessary. I can agree with this because I always like to keep myself occupied whether it's taking out my cell phone or tapping a pencil I am always looking for a way to clear my boredom.
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
Is it possible for one to not use their phone constantly? Relying on it for simple math, to take an aesthetic picture of their food, or simply to whine to one's followers about how expensive the latte they just purchased was, phones are always being used and it’s affecting us. “The Veldt” is written by Ray Bradbury and is about a rich family whose children become attached to a room called the nursery which leads them to hurt others. Susan Green writes an article, “Modern technology is changing the way our brains work” that explains the harsh effects of a screen. This connection is relevant now because everyone has a gadget whether it be a phone,computer, or television.
Scott Hightower’s poem “Father” could be very confusing to interpret. Throughout almost the entirety of the poem the speaker tries to define who his father is by comparing him to various things. As the poem begins the reader is provided with the information that the father “was” all of these things this things that he is being compared to. The constant use of the word “was” gets the reader to think ‘how come the speaker’s father is no longer comparable to these things?’ After the speaker reveals that his father is no longer around, he describes how his father impacted him. Details about the father as well as descriptions of the impacts the father has distraught on the speaker are all presented in metaphors. The repetitive pattern concerning the speaker’s father and the constant use of metaphors gives the reader a sense that the speaker possesses an obsessive trait. As the reader tries to interpret the seemingly endless amount of metaphors, sets of connotative image banks begin to develop in the reader’s mind. Major concepts that are expressed throughout the poem are ideas about what the speaker’s father was like, what he meant to the speaker, and how he influenced the speaker.
This insight correlates with the above insight in that I often use homework, which is productive, as a distraction for homework that is more pressing. In addition to using homework as a distraction, Facebook, texting/Snapchat, and side conversations are also distractions that occur on a regular basis. I found that during the time I reserve for more important things, such as homework or spending time with others, I will absentmindedly pick up my phone and become distracted for an extended period of time. It may start with simply replying to a text message and then somehow, I end up on Facebook and its an hour later. The detracts from my flourishing because I am not longer giving my full attention to the things that matter, completing assignments which is helping me work toward my greatest good, or contributing to building my relationships, for the same reason. Something that I have done to combat this form of spiritual apathy is to delete Facebook off my phone and keep my phone on silent, unless I am anticipating a phone call. I feel like for the few short days I have been implementing these things, I already feel more present in my relationships and tasks. I complete tasks faster because I do not have several “breaks” from the habit of checking my phone, and the time that I spending with my family and friends is of greater quality because if I lead by example of keeping my phone
About a month ago I attended a dinner with some close friends. As we all sat in the restaurant waiting for drink orders to be taken, I looked around the table and what I saw made me feel more than a little annoyed considering I had not seen some of these people (or spoken to some of them) in over a month. Everyone at the table had sat down and immediately took out their phone. After reading the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?”, by Jean M. Twenge, the feelings experienced that evening at dinner were validated and broadened by the depth and scope of the article. Jean Twenge was persuasive because of the statistical data in her article.
If we were to take a look around, there is not a doubt that we will at least see one person with a phone in his or her hand. Smart phones, tablets, computers and televisions are a staple in most common households today. As technology becomes smarter, it is noticeable that people are becoming increasingly lazier. According to a survey conducted by the Department of Labor in 2012, watching TV was the leisure activity that occupied the most time, about 2.8 hours a day (“American Time Use Survey Summary”). This means people are spending more time in front of their televisions than they are any other activities in their free time. Technology is the number one thing people turn to, whether it is for entertainment or for functional use. People are relying on technology devices more than they should be.
Throughout the article, Carr uses powerful yet distressing diction to explain to readers how phones are negatively affecting their users. Carr says, “Just suppressing the desire to check our phone, which we do routinely and subconsciously throughout the day can debilitate our thinking.
Would that be possible to stay away from our technology’s devices for just a day? The answer for this question will bring a lot of negative answers, and of course if we ask this question in a survey, “NO” will be the winner of this survey. Talking about the use of technology reminded me one of the sources from my annotated bibliography by Amy Petersen, who is the Theatre and Media Arts Department Chair and Associate Professor in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University. In her article which she wrote about the overuse of tech in our daily life and its affects, she said “If you would have told me a few years ago that I would feel completely lost without a cell phone, I never would have believed you. Now my iPhone is almost always within reach. My children likely believe that my most important possession is my MacBook Air, which is usually open and on whenever I am in the house. (“Jensen” par. 3)” Yes technology, internet, and cell phone became our best friends, and most of us can’t live without them.

According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
A beautiful commercial, “Disconnect to Connect”, which was made by Thailand DTAC Company, shows that there are many people always focusing on their cell phones. The commercial shows a man ignoring his girlfriend who is walking with him on the beach, another man neglecting his friends who are playing piano, and a father overlooking his children who are playing around. Then, they smile and find the happiness of life after they turn off their digital devices. These things happen constantly around us every day. Nowadays, the functions of digital devices are stronger, and our eyes and fingers contribute more time on it. There is no doubt that the digital devices make our life more convenient and easier because people can connect with each other immediately. Nonetheless, people should not spend too much time on digital devices for three main reasons: having less face-to-face communication, depriving people’s brains of needed downtime, and negatively influencing people’s health.
