A major contributor to the cognitive perspective is psychologists Jean Piaget, Piaget develop the theory of cognitive development and stages of cognitive development. Overall, cognitive perspective relies on internal mental states that simply ignores behaviorists. For an example the internal states include confidence, wishes, thoughts and inspiration. Though the internal mental states cannot observe any behaviors, but can get information that is perceived, processed, stored, retrieved and forgotten, and encompasses perception, categorization, memory, knowledge representation, language and thinking
clearly. Therefore, much about what experts know about mental and cognitive development is based on the careful observation of developmental theorists and their theories, such as Piaget's theory of cognitive development, which we discussed.
The main aim of his research was to show the differences between the children’s and adults’ way of thinking. It means that different factors influence the way of thinking of people at different stages of development. Piaget focused attention on the fact that children actually have a rather basic mental structure that is based on knowledge and experience that is formed in a particular way. He argued that cognitive development is a process that takes long period of time and can be influenced by huge amount of different internal and external factors.
Jean Piaget first established the foundational concepts of his cognitive theory in 1936 (McLeod, 2009), it focused on cognitive development, which is the obtaining of the capacity to understand, communicate and remember information over time (Lilienfeld et al. 2015, p. 408). Piaget structured his theory by conceptualising four key stages of cognitive development that a person progresses through via the processes known as assimilation, accommodation and adaption.
Cognitive development focuses on the person’s ability to intellect, perceive and process information. (35589) defined the cognitive ability as the process in which people learn, think and use language; it is the progression of their mental capacity from being irrational to rational (35589). Piaget and Vygotsky are two cognitive theorists whom were interested in the cognitive development of a person across their life span and its relation with social and environmental factors. Piaget is the most known cognitive theorist who affected the world of psychology greatly, and was a great influence to many psychologists out there; however his main intention was the innate maturity process and, unlike Vygotsky, he underestimated the role of language and social interaction and his theory wasn’t useful in the teaching field. However, both theorists believed that a person goes through a sequential process during their development. They were also both aware that one gains knowledge through experience and not through passive learning.
Comparing the Behavioral Perspective and the Cognitive Perspective The behavioral perspective is the idea that if psychology was to be a science, then it must focus on events, which are directly observable on behavior, rather than on mental life. The behavioral perspective maintains the primary emphasis on observable behavior and its relation to environmental events. Behavioral perspective is through reinforcement, which is the idea that patterns of emitted behavior can be selected by their consequences. Cognitive perspective is centered on the description of the nature and development of the representation of knowledge. It comes from three points of view, which are the theory of information processing, the inability of behaviorism to provide a comprehensive account for all aspects of human behavior, and the invention of the computer.

Jean Piaget’s cognitive development theory is focused on the belief that development precedes learning, specifically upon individual development of one’s knowledge through independent learning and experiences (Lourenco, 2012). Piaget’s theory discusses how an individual’s surroundings affect their development resulting in a series of changes in the understandings of their environment.

Jean Piaget’s cognitive theory states that a child goes through many stages in his or her cognitive development. It is through these stages that the child is able to develop into an adult. The first of these stages is called the sensorimotor period, in which the child’s age ranges from 0-2 years old. During this sensorimotor period of a child’s development, the child’s main objective is to master the mechanics of his or her own body. Towards the end of this period, the child begins to recognize himself as a separate individual, and that people and objects around him or her have their own existence.

Many patients report feeling marginalized by their health care professionals and that their own personal thoughts, feelings, and ideals are not being accounted for. On the surface many mental illnesses might seem very similar, but in actuality they are all very different and have to be handled different ways, just like every patient is different and will not always respond in a predictable way. It takes a long time to properly manage a person’s mental illness because no one management or treatment works for everyone. “Overall, health professionals may not provide adequate intervention, early detection, or community referral options for individuals with mental or behavioral disorders” (Ahmedani 7). It is easier for health professionals to accept the stereotypes and give the majority of their patients a mediocre treatment that can be applies to many illnesses than to give each patient an adequate treatment plan that is specifically designed for him or her. In creating a customized treatment plan for a patients “Clinicians should ask about the nature of adverse experiences, discrimination, the extent of social networks, self-image, etc., and incorporate these issues into the treatment plan” (Byrne 69). It will be a slower and more difficult process than giving them a baseline treatment, but personalizing treatments for each patient ensures that they are getting the best help for their specific

Behaviorism is the point of view where learning and behavior are described and explained in terms of stimulus-response relationships. Behaviorists agree that an individual’s behaviors is a result of their interaction with the environment. Feedback, praise and rewards are all ways people can respond to becoming conditioned. The focus is on observable events instead of events that happen in one’s head. The belief that learning has not happened unless there is an observable change in behavior. “The earliest and most Ardent of behaviourists was Watson (1931; Medcof and Roth, 1991; Hill 1997).
