Flexibility Flexibility in MMA is very important when it comes to the range in motion in your techniques. It increases the speed of the technique, as well as your ability to dodge or counter attacks. With a significantly more dynamic range in motion and the flexibility and control associated with that more dynamic range of motion, it becomes far easier for a fighter to shift their body into the position they want when they're on the ground. Transitioning from one position to another also becomes far easier. Developing flexibility will make the opponent's height less of an issue for the combatant. The fighter also won't have to fight the resistance of their own body nearly as much. Better flexibility also greatly improves the range of motion around the joints and the muscle movements themselves. Developing flexibility in the hips are extremely important when it comes to escaping grapples. Flexibility also helps when throwing devastating punches. A standing broad jump is a jump for distance from a standing position. It can be divided into four temporal phases: countermovement, propulsion, flight, and landing. In the countermovement phase, the subject squats to load up and extends the shoulders and the arms. In the propulsion phase, the goal is to generate enough force to propel the body forward. The person must stand erect in full extension of the trunk, hips, and knees. Then, the person flexes at the hip and the knee, which results with the trunk being rotated in a forward direction. Next, the arms become slightly flexed to hyperextension, to full flexion. Prior to the flight phase, the body goes into full extension. The flight phase begins as soon as the feet have left the ground. During this phase, the body stays in full extension or can become hyperextended. Towards the end of the flight phase, the trunk rotates forward in an anterior direction along with minor hip and knee flexion just before landing. During the landing phase, the knees and the hips are in maximum flexion and forward rotation of the trunk. There is also arm movement by moving both arms in the vertical direction to improve jumping distance. At the onset of the jump, the arm swings forward and during landing, they swing back and forth.

The violence of this sport is far beyond what boxing, or football could ever accomplish; while those sports often cause concussions and the occasional broken bone, some of the martial arts expect their students to break the bones of their opponents if the fight goes out of control or simply by accident. This brutality usually shunned by civilized society, instead served to increase the sports reputation. The popularity of mixed martial arts soared over the last couple of years mainly due to the emergence of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the fast growing sport in America. With this popularity of the sport mixed martial art gyms are emerging up all across the country. I was born in Lima, Peru, raised in a middle class family, and moved to the USA in 1999. My father, a fan of martial arts enrolled me and my brother in different martial arts styles Karate, kung Fu and Judo. I can say that most of my younger years I practiced more martial arts than playing our national sport called soccer. At the age of thirteen I was going to watch on TV something that will impact in my future. On November 12, 1993, my father and I were watching a show called Ultimate Fighting Championship also known as UFC. This event on TV was about a group of eight fighters from different martial arts like Judo, Karate, Sumo, Kung Fu, Boxing, Muay Thai, Sambo, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, who will fight each other to see who is the ultimate fighter and the best martial art of all (The UFC history). Royce Gracie originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and weighting no more than 170 lbs and five foot nine inches tall. He won every single fight by submission, and was proclaimed the first UFC champion of the world. His opponents outweighed him by more than fifty pounds and most of them were taller than him. We were amazed of how easy and quick he beat them without a single punch or kick. I asked my father if he can find a place in the city where I can train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but at that time he could not find any academy or gym where they teach the art. Nobody knew about that martial art, and the only two places to train were in Brazil and USA.
A good comparison of this is when one is looking at how long distance runners run compared to short distance runners. Distance runners can maintain their speed longer while short distance runners can achieve their top speed quicker.
Short course sprinting is a good idea. This is where you need speed. Long course concentrates on endurance. Strength is important in all three sports. In hockey and football you need to use muscles to apply force to overcome resistance.

Two fighters will face each in the rings (known as the octagon due to its shape) for three to five five-minute rounds. I started taking martial arts classes when I was six years old. I wanted to be a mixed martial arts fighter all my life. I loved the thought of stepping into the octagon and pounding somebody senseless as a sport. My mother and father, at first, did not want me to take the Taekwondo classes because of this fact. It took a lot of begging to finally convince them to let me do it. They realized that it is very important for any child to learn some type of martial arts. It is essential to use for defense. Mixed martial arts are the thing that helped me cope with my rough childhood and mold me into who I am today. Over the past twenty years, the sport of MMA has revolutionized and has become very popular throughout the world. Despite this being said, other people very hesitant about accepting mixed martial arts. The sport of MMA is gradually becoming a safer sport. Even though it is considered a dangerous sport, other sports at proven to be more dangerous.

Asking questions such as “Do I face my fist this way or that”, questions like these are what you should listen to. By listening to and doing what your sensei says you will learn discipline. Integrity comes from showing up every day and doing your best, even win your instructor is helping someone else. Honesty comes with this as well, when you admit your mistakes on the exercise it helps you know that honesty is right. Enlightenment comes from knowing there is a higher power and following the Way. Timing is a skill that takes both mental and physical disipline. You must learn to read your opponent’ rhythm and use a rhythm they don’t expect to get in them in your critical distance line and
