The history of the métier of Army recruiter runs as deep as the military itself. The American military has had recruiters since the time of the colonies in the 1700s. Even before the era of willing patriotic citizens joining recruitment of volunteers was an important component of filling military positions. In the past many people weren’t as enthusiastic about agglutinating the military as current day so they conscripted or involuntarily recruited citizens in the United States Army. This was looked upon as unconstitutional in the land of freedom so they started to campaign heavily about the ...

To the best of my knowledge there has never been a sociological study of the effects of Marine recruit training, and only one or two non-fiction books have been written about the training of male Marine recruits, most by someone who never served in the Corps. This paper will make reference to those works, but for the most part will rely on the experiences of the author, a Marine for more than 30 years; five of those as a drill instructor whose primary...
This paper will not bore with the definition of a profession. The United States Army is about more than words, it is about action. The action of over 238 years of tradition and service. The Army is a profession. A profession requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. A member of a profession must wholly commit himself and his skills to a calling which is entrusted by the public. A profession provides its members with intrinsic value which motivates beyond financial gain. The Army is a higher calling which demands all of these qualities and more.
During the majority of the war, men were guided into civilian and military positions through a policy that the Selective Service Director Lewis B. Hershey called "channeling." The draft system used induction as a threat to "channel" people into more desirable pursuits that were in the interests of the nation. For instance, an engineer earned a deferment from the war because he was needed at home while a person who did not have a deferment could be inducted into the army. For every solider in combat, there were many other positions that needed to be filled...
Over forty years has passed since the United States inducted the last draftee through the Selective Service System. The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States, which gives the President the right or power to conscript men for military service. There have been different Acts passed by congress since 1917 that require men of various ages to register for service. Although, the name of each Act and the age requirements of the registries changed, the Acts were all similar in nature. They all gave the President the right to call men to war when he deemed necessary. In January 1973, Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announced the creation of the all-volunteer service, retracting the need for the draft (GAO.gov). Under current law, all men between the ages of 18-25 must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, however this information is used mostly for recruitment purposes and in case of any future crisis. There has been much controversy over this matter since the Vietnam War, when people started to realize the draft was unfair due to loopholes and draft exemptions making the draft unfair for working men. At one point in time the military draft may have been necessary, but today’s all-volunteer military has eliminated the need for a draft.
“From the onset of World War II until July 1973, the draft was a fact of life for American youth” (Warner & Asch, 169). Throughout this period of time, men were drafted into the service in an attempt to fill voids in the Armed Forces, which would not be filled through voluntary resources. Conscription was ended on June 30, 1973, and since then the U.S. Armed Forces have relied upon volunteers to fill their ranks. Currently, the number of active personnel serving in the U.S. Armed Forces is estimated at approximately 1.5 million people. Hence, only around two percent of the U.S. population is servicemen, who defend our domestic security as well as protect American interests abroad.
Men who went into the Navy and Coast Guard offices to sign up were usually passed to the USMS by recruiters to help the aid the low numbers of merchant marines. Also what contributed to the growing service during this time was that the USMS was the only racially integrated service in the United States. The men who instructed recruits the USMS were thousands of active and retired mariners from the Navy and Coast Guard. The USMS took over 250,000 recruits and was able to turn them into fighting mariners. The instructors taught the men how to operate anti-aircraft guns and cannons, along with the proper equipment used to protect them selves.

Recruitment is a serious issue for an organization and one that ought to be afforded a considerable amount of planning in order to successfully achieve desired outcomes. Recruitment is a costly process for an organization and poorly executed recruitment can result in selecting candidates that are not appropriate for the organization. A poorly executed recruitment can also reflect negatively on the organization’s reputation, which can cost the organization solid future candidates. Due to the cost both in time and in resources, a recruitment process deserves a solid training program that covers a variety of issues. Thought should be given to the topics to be covered in a training program, aids or materials recruiters will need, practical skills to be covered in the training, the person most appropriate to conduct the training, and any additional needs to be considered to ensure the training is most effective in achieving the goal of developing strong recruiting skills.
