Columbus is the 15th largest city in the United States and is the capital of Ohio. It encompasses a ten county area and is the central city of the Ohio Metropolitan statistical area and is the 3rd largest metropolitan area in Ohio. It is also known as the 4th populated state capital in the United States. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The city is named after the explorer Christopher Columbus and was founded in 1812. It started functioning as the state capital in 1816.

In the 18th century, the Fur trade attracted many European Traders to the Area. Columbus is usually caught between factions, including American Indian and European Interests. In 1740, the French forcibly evicted the Pennsylvania traders, who over ran the territory until then. George Washington was sent for surveying Ohio Country by Ohio company, in the early 1750s. The international Seven years war also included the fight for control of the territory in the French and Indian War. It was then, when the Columbus region suffered massacres, battles and Turmoils.

Columbus was the governor of Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean, however he was quite cruel. In fact: “Native islanders who didn’t collect enough gold could have their hands cut off, and rebel Spanish colonists were executed at the gallows” (Klein). Enough people complained to the monarchy about Columbus’ cruel treatment that in 1500, a royal commissioner arrested Columbus and brought back to Spain (Klein). Columbus eventually lost his title as governor, yet Columbus was still able and in fact sent on another voyage to the Americas by King Ferdinand. In modern society we are stricter on our idea of what a hero is so if in the 1500’s someone was thought of as a villain than in modern times that person is definitely not a hero. How should we honor history? Where should we stand in the debate over memorials? These the questions that float to the surface when Gov. Nikki R. Haley of South Carolina signed a bill into law that ordered the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the Capitol grounds. Michael I. Niman author of As Confederate Flags Fall, Columbus Statues Stand Tall and Ernest B. Ferguson author of The End of History write regarding the question, what decisions should be taken against the offending statues and memorials that remain across the United States. Niman believes all offending statues should be removed, but I believe Ferguson idea is much better, we need to have dialogue for a better solution.
To me Columbus Day should NOT be a national holiday because he was only good at being a leader and taking risk. Columbus was a betrayer, greedy man and leader of criminals. Columbus is not at all worthy of having his own holiday.
Some of the problems when studying history are the texts and documents that have been discovered are only from perspective. Furthermore, on occasion that one perspective is all there may be for historians to study. A good example of this textual imbalance can be found from the texts about the discovery of the New World; more specifically, the letters of Christopher Columbus and Pêro Vaz de Caminha during their voyages to the New World. Plenty of the text from this time is written from the perspective of the Europeans, as the Indigenous population did not have any written text.
